Opera is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. However, it requires only an opportunity to awaken people’s interest. A Yue Opera play titled New Dragon Gate Inn is just the opportunity.
As the play gains popularity, an actress, who plays the important supporting role of JiaTing, has become a star. Nicknamed the “Jade-faced Man”, Jia’s handsome appearance and attractive yet natural charm have got more attention.
Now the actress is sparking a Yue Opera fever in China. She says her profession is a combination of the charms of both genders while showing a mysterious sense of beauty.
Innovation (创新) may be an important reason for this play to be popular. Unlike traditional opera stage, the theater is like an inn. The audience sit close to the performers. They are guests in the inn, and sometimes, the performers interact with them. In some cases, the audience become part of the play. They immerse themselves in a unique and fascinating viewing experience. The idea of the stage seems to disappear. So does the distance between performers and the audience. The audience and performers are all part of the play.
This fresh, unusual viewing experience has drawn young people to the theater again and again. They really like it. The success of New Dragon Gate Inn comes not only from the charm of the work itself, but also from the cultural heritage. Through the play, more people have come to realize that Yue Opera can tap more opportunities for the future of Chinese traditional opera.
“Opera is absorbed in the DNA of the Chinese. After a small stone is cast, the DNA awakens. I hope I am that small stone,” the actress said. “Today, we are putting in great efforts to make Yue Opera more popular with the younger generation. This is a positive step in the revival of this ancient art.”

A. Its simple plot. B. Its traditional opera stage.

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e-books, people are spending more time staring at screens. While online reading opens up a great deal of knowledge to people, there are some disadvantages too, such as tired eyes, headaches, as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system, Bionic Reading developed by a Swiss company, can help people overcome these issues, and most importantly, it aims to help people read faster online and develop a more in-depth understanding of the content.
The reading system improves the reading process by guiding the eyes through the text with artificial fixation points. In short, some parts of the words are displayed in bold (粗体的). As a result, the reader only focuses on the highlighted letters and lets the brain center complete the rest. Your brain can “read” faster than your eyes, so by reducing the number of letters your eye needs to look at, you can read faster while still preserving the full context.
The company discovered the system by accident. They were working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized they could read it if they sectioned it off. They worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and are still working to adjust it.
An early study was conducted but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading. Some people with ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍) have proved that Bionic Reading helps them focus and understand what they are reading. Other people don’t seem to notice a big difference compared to the regular text. There’s also no evidence to suggest Bionic Reading is any better than the regular text. The best way to know if Bionic Reading helps you read better online is to try it yourself.
28. What is the main purpose of Bionic Reading?
A. To make online reading more interesting.
B. To figure out several online reading problems.
C. To improve online reading speed and understanding.
D. To study the effects of online reading on the brain.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The effect of current online reading.
B. The creation story of Bionic Reading.
C. The advantages of Bionic Reading.
D. The principle of Bionic Reading.
30. What can we infer about Bionic Reading from the last paragraph?
A. It only helps with foreign languages.
B. Its effect varies among different individuals.
C. It is better than traditional reading methods.
D. Research proves it works for everyone.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Online Reading Is Of Great Benefit
B. A New System Improves Online Reading
C. Traditional Reading Faces New Challenges
D. Bionic Reading Changes Our Reading Habits

Bumblebee (大黄蜂) populations have declined (下降) by 90 percent in the past 20 years. The decline of the bumblebees is highly concerning as they are significant for ecosystems. They pollinate (授粉) flowers and crops. If their populations were to continue to decline, crops would not be able to produce fruits and vegetables. Despite being small, they are important to nature’s balance.
And now, a new study published in the Frontiers in Bee Science has found that the rising heat caused by global warming might be a reason for the decrease in numbers across the globe. “The decline in populations and ranges of several species of bumblebees may be explained by issues of overheating of the nests,” Peter Kevan of the University of Guelph in Canada and lead author of the study said in a statement.
Kevan and his colleagues decided to take a closer look at the facts relating to bumblebee populations across the world. Kevan and the colleagues looked at 180 years of literature on the species and found one common reason across all bumblebee species that they can survive in temperatures up to 36 degrees Celsius, but the perfect temperature for nests is between 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. They are unlikely to be able to adjust themselves to the extent that rising temperatures due to climate change require, the study reports. While individual bees may be able to deal with increased heat better than others, the study notes that if nests are too hot, the groups will not survive.
“The effect of high nest temperatures has not been studied very much, which is surprising,” Kevan said. Similar studies have been done on honeybees (蜜蜂), another threatened yet highly important species. This suggests further that heat stress is a major factor in bees’ overall decline.
Although the studies led by Kevan have limitations, the potential effects for bumblebee health and conversation are large and long-term.
32. What do we know about bumblebees from paragraph 1?
A. They have been extinct within decades in America.
B. Their populations have decreased a lot in the last two decades.
C. Americans are concerned about their living environment.
D. They tend to depend on flowers and crops to survive.
33. How did Kevan and his coworkers carry out the study?
A They raised bumblebees to observe them.
B. They focused on studying individual bumblebees.
C. They conducted experiments on bumblebees.
D. They studied literature on bumblebees.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward Kevan’s studies?
A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Big Results for Small Bumblebees
B. Bumblebees Protection Inspires Scientists
C. The Impact of Climate Change on Honeybees
D. Research Shows the Main Reason of Bumblebee Decline

Now I am a famous writer and public speaker who always believes in the great power of language. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined.
When I was in sixth grade, my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest. I was pretty bad at the rehearsal (排练). I felt quite nervous and afraid of failure. Therefore, after class, I ran to the office to find Mrs Lin. Hearing what I said, Mrs Lin sounded puzzled. “You’ve put your heart and soul into practicing it all these past few weeks.” “Yes,” I wanted to say. All I had dreamed of was to represent my school on that stage and be the best public speaker ever. Instead, I whispered, “I messed up big time at rehearsal today. I…I’ve been messing up regularly... a lot. I want to quit.” My words came fast on each other’s heels. “Can you tell the judges I’ve been seriously ill, please?” I sounded hopeless.
Mrs Lin was quiet for several moments. “Making up lies is not how we solve problems, Lucy,” she finally said. “You are not the person to shy away from a challenge.” I nodded uncertainly. Then she took out a book about Phoenix. She hoped that Phoenix could give me courage. During reading, Phoenix’s story of bravery and her fight for education fascinated me. Her determination and courage in the face of challenges deeply moved me. Inspired by her story, I decided that my speech would be about Phoenix and the importance of education for everyone.
As the day of the contest approached, I was still struggling with my fears. I knew I had to overcome them, not just for myself but also for the message I wanted to convey through Phoenix’s story. I decided to take a different approach to my preparation. I started by researching more about Phoenix, her life, her struggles, and her devotion to education. During this process, I also sought feedback from Mrs Lin. She listened attentively to my drafts and offered constructive comments. Her guidance was invaluable, helping me to shape a speech that was not only informative but also emotionally rich.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing.

D To study the effects of online reading on the brain.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The effect of current online reading.
B. The creation story of Bionic Reading.
C. The advantages of Bionic Reading.
D. The principle of Bionic Reading.
30. What can we infer about Bionic Reading from the last paragraph?
A. It only helps with foreign languages.
B. Its effect varies among different individuals.
C. It is better than traditional reading methods.
D. Research proves it works for everyone.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Online Reading Is Of Great Benefit
B. A New System Improves Online Reading
C. Traditional Reading Faces New Challenges
D. Bionic Reading Changes Our Reading Habits
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. B

Although the studies led by Kevan have limitations the potential effects for bumblebee health and conversation are large and long-term.

【答案】 The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing. The lecture hall was filled with students and teachers. As I began to speak, I saw encouraging smiles from Mrs Lin and my friends, which gave me the confidence to continue. I talked about Phoenix’s amazing journey, her challenges, and her great devotion to education. I described how, despite the challenges she faced, Phoenix continued to work hard. I concluded my speech by encouraging everyone to take inspiration from Phoenix and to strive for a better future through working hard. At last, my speech was met with loud applause.
Thanks to Mrs Lin, my dream was coming true. I not only won the contest but also got closer to my dream. I knew that without Mrs Lin, I would not have been successful. I made a promise to myself: to carry forward the lessons of courage that Mrs Lin had given. I would use my voice to empower others, to echo the stories that needed to be told, and to honor the guider who had set me on this path. The journey had just begun, and I was ready to embrace it with open arms and an open heart.
