Several years ago, a worldwide heavy rain was predicted, but no one got prepared for what was to come. Then, some areas received over 100 mm of rain. Cars and trucks floated down the streets. Whole buildings were swept away. At least 225 people lost their lives, and millions became homeless.
The weather is always changing. Over the past few years, heavy rains have led to floods in many parts of the world. Droughts have taken place in Brazil and Australia. There have been heat waves in Europe which killed thousands. There have been more powerful hurricanes and tornadoes than ever before. In 2017 alone, the financial cost from global weather events was up to 340 billion dollars.
With more wild weather events happening, people couldn’t help asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or our fault? The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. But most scientists hold the same view that human activity has made the Earth warmer. It is this global warming that makes heat waves more likely. The higher temperatures also result in more water going into the air, which causes heavier and more frequent rain. Many scientists also believe global warming makes hurricanes and other storms stronger.
This means we’re likely to see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and accept it,” says scientist Michael. He and other experts say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.
4. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. A past weather event happened in some areas in the world.
B. Some facts are listed about the global warming.
C. A number of recent weather events happened over the world.
D. Wild weather is partly the result of human activity.
5. How does paragraph two develop?
A. By giving a lot of examples of recent wild weather events.
B. By describing a serious flood that once happened.
C. By predicting how the weather will change in a few years.
D. By comparing the former wild weather with what happened now
6. What does scientist Michael’s words mean?
A. People can not do anything to prevent wild weather.
B. If people stop global warming, the weather will be better.
C. It is too late to stop global warming.
D. People have to stand by and accept what will happen to us.
7. Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a tourist brochure B. In a research paper
C. In a science fiction D. In a nature magazine
C
As AI art generators (生成器) take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some wrinkles to iron out, which means there are indeed flaws to consider alongside the incredible artwork a good artificial intelligence can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and emotion, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s prompt to datasets, and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that the AI is driven by commands instead of an emotional desire to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why? Scarcity — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be?
AI art involves a program mimicking (模仿) the work of existing artists to create a new piece according to the request of a human. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user? And can the original artists sue for copyright (版权) violation? Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can tackle the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize?
8. What does the underlined word “flaws” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Benefits. B. Advances. C. Weaknesses. D. Standards.
9. How is AI art different from human art?
A. It is the product of experience.
B. It costs less money to produce.
C. It combines different styles of work.
D. It is not a mirror of humans’ emotions.
10. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in the third paragraph?
A. To prove the popularity of classic artworks.
B. To present the potential trouble with the value of AI art.
C. To show the advantages of AI painters over human artists.
D. To introduce a new way of preserving art masterpieces.
11. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. AI art promotes the sale of artistic products.
B. AI art makes copyright issues more complicated.
C. Artists can create more works with the help of AI.
D. There will be fierce competition in the art industry.
D
Eating a juicy steak is worse for the environment than frying up some tofu: that should come as no surprise. Going vegan can greatly cut the carbon footprint of your diet. But what about the fewer calories, and lower levels of protein, found in most plant-based foods when compared with meat?
To make the relative carbon impact of foods easier to understand, The Economist proposes a banana index (指数). It compares popular foodstuffs in three aspects—weight, calories and protein—compared to the humble banana, a fruit of middling nutritional value and impact on weather conditions.
Indexing greenhouse-gas emissions to a single food gives a sense of how different foodstuffs rank. Unfortunately for carnivores (食肉动物), beef is bad for the environment no matter how you slice it. Producing one kilogram of mince (馅) causes as many emissions as 109kg of bananas (call it a “banana score” of 109). As for nutritional value, beef’s banana score falls to 54 (one calorie of beef mince causes 54 times as much carbon emissions as one calorie of banana). By protein, it scores seven.
Poultry (家禽) scores 11 bananas by weight and four by calorie. However, as a source of protein, it is more carbon-friendly than bananas: poultry protein emits just three-fifths of the same amount of banana protein. The same applies to salmon. Unsurprisingly, plant-based alternatives to meat do even better: a meat-free burger, for instance, scores just one-fifth of the emissions of bananas per gram of protein.
Our banana index relies on average emissions for a given food. In the real world some producers are more climate-friendly than others, and some foods travel farther to consumers. Our banana index also does not capture other environmental impacts, such as land and water use (though here too, beef tends to perform poorly).
Voting in Europe suggests that most consumers want to be more climate-friendly—and with food production responsible for perhaps a quarter of global emissions, eating with the climate in mind would make a difference. Three-quarters of the respondents said they want labels that would explain the climate impact of their food. In the meantime, our banana index might help.
12. What’s the most likely reason for bananas to be chosen as an object of reference?
A. Bananas have fewer calories and less protein.
B. Bananas are a humble fruit.
C. Bananas have the least impact on the environment.
D. Bananas are of medium climate effect and nutrition.
13. According to the index which one is more carbon-friendly as a source of protein?
A. Beef B. A meat-free burger C. Poultry D. A banana
14. Which aspect of the index does paragraph 5 focus on?
A. Its drawbacks B. Its benefits
C. Its practical meanings D. Its principles
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. An approach to assessing nutritional value of food
B. A way to measure the climate impact of food
C. A great indicator of greenhouse-gas emissions
D. A big helper in deciding what to buy

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started.

Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

C It is too late to stop global warming.
D. People have to stand by and accept what will happen to us.
7. Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a tourist brochure B. In a research paper
C. In a science fiction D. In a nature magazine
A 5. A 6. B 7. D

We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.(这意味着我们可能会看到更多的恶劣天气。“但我们不必只是站在那里接受它,”科学家迈克尔说。他和其他专家表示,我们需要阻止地球变暖。我们还需要做好准备,做一些有助于拯救生命的事情)”可知,迈克尔的话表明,全球变暖对气候有影响,如果人们阻止全球变暖,天气会更好。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The weather is always changing.(天气总是在变化)”及第三段“With more wild weather events happening, people couldn’t help asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or our fault? The answer seems to be: a little of both.(随着越来越多的恶劣天气事件的发生,人们不禁要问:天气怎么了?为什么?这是自然的,还是我们的错?答案似乎是:两者兼而有之)”可知,本文介绍了恶劣天气事件的增多及背后的原因及我们应该如何对待这一现象,文章应该出自自然杂志。故选D。

A Benefits. B. Advances. C. Weaknesses. D. Standards.
C 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第一段第二句中的“The technology is still developing and has some wrinkles to iron out(这项技术仍在发展中,还有一些问题需要解决)”可知,此处是指这项技术有一些缺陷,所以flaws意为“缺陷”。
根据第二段最后一句“The difference is that the AI is driven by commands instead of an emotional desire to express itself.(不同之处在于,AI是由命令驱动的,而不是由表达自己的情感欲望驱动的。)”
根据第三段第一句“AI painters can produce over 1,000 original works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard.(只要敲击键盘上的回车键,人工智能画家就能创作出1000多幅原创艺术作品。)” Scarcity — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be?(为什么?稀缺性——只有一个原物。有人应该为这些东西买单吗?如果一位艺术家要出售人工智能杰作,价格应该是多少?)”可知,作者在第三段提到了蒙娜丽莎是为了呈现AI艺术价值的潜在问题。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段前两句“AI art involves a program mimicking (模仿) the work of existing artists to create a new piece according to the request of a human. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user?(人工智能艺术是模仿现有艺术家的作品,根据人类的要求创作新作品的程序。但是是谁创造了艺术品,机器还是它的使用者?)”和最后一句“Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.(这些问题使人工智能和艺术产业的融合变得复杂,同时也加剧了反对将人工智能生成的艺术视为可销售的艺术产品的争论。)”

13. According to the index, which one is more carbon-friendly as a source of protein?
A. Beef B. A meat-free burger C. Poultry D. A banana
14. Which aspect of the index does paragraph 5 focus on?
A. Its drawbacks B. Its benefits
C. Its practical meanings D. Its principles
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. An approach to assessing nutritional value of food
B. A way to measure the climate impact of food
C. A great indicator of greenhouse-gas emissions
D. A big helper in deciding what to buy
D 13. B 14. A 15. B

根据文章第二段话“It compares popular foodstuffs in three aspects—weight, calories and protein—compared to the humble banana, a fruit of middling nutritional value and impact on weather conditions.(它从重量、卡路里和蛋白质这三个方面比较了流行的食物和普通的香蕉,香蕉是一种营养价值中等、对天气状况影响不大的水果。)”
根据文章第四段话“However, as a source of protein, it is more carbon-friendly than bananas: poultry protein emits just three-fifths of the same amount of banana protein. The same applies to salmon. Unsurprisingly, plant-based alternatives to meat do even better: a meat-free burger, for instance, scores just one-fifth of the emissions of bananas per gram of protein.(然而,作为一种蛋白质来源,它比香蕉更环保:家禽蛋白质的排放量仅为香蕉蛋白质的五分之三。这同样适用于鲑鱼。不出所料,以植物为基础的肉类替代品效果更好:例如,一个无肉汉堡每克蛋白质的排放量仅为香蕉的五分之一。)”可知,更环保的蛋白质来源应该是一个无肉汉堡。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段话“Our banana index relies on average emissions for a given food. In the real world some producers are more climate-friendly than others, and some foods travel farther to consumers. Our banana index also does not capture other environmental impacts, such as land and water use (though here too, beef tends to perform poorly).(我们的香蕉指数依赖于一种特定食物的平均排放量。在现实世界中,一些生产商比其他生产商更环保,一些食品到达消费者手中的路程更远。我们的香蕉指数也没有考虑其他环境影响,比如土地和水的使用(尽管在这方面,牛肉也往往表现不佳)。)”可知,本段讲述了香蕉指数的不足。故选A项。
根据文章第二段话“To make the relative carbon impact of foods easier to understand, The Economist proposes a banana index (指数).(为了让人们更容易理解食物的相对碳影响,《经济学人》提出了一个香蕉指数。)”以及最后一段话“Three-quarters of the respondents said they want labels that would explain the climate impact of their food. In the meantime, our banana index might help.(四分之三的受访者表示,他们希望标签能够解释其食品对气候的影响。与此同时,我们的香蕉指数可能会有所帮助。)”可知,香蕉指数可以帮助我们测量食品对气候的影响。故选B项。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Soon after, the race started. While I was running, I saw many runners pass me on the way. Minutes later, I already felt tired. However, to encourage those in need, I tried to show the best of me, without worrying about the result. I kept moving forward as fast as I could. After most runners finished the race, I finally made it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.
