The streets, thick with anger, had his mind ticking, “There had to be a better way. Women may forget to carry pepper spray or other self-defence tools, but everyone puts on shoes.” It took him two years to come up with the model, using social media to reach out to those who could help him. Mandala was awarded a letter of appreciation by the government of Telangana for his invention in May 2017. Siddharth believes technology can truly change the quality of our lives. He launched Cognizance Welfare Initiative (CWI) two years ago to teach coding to students and helped them build microcontroller projects such as a GPS tracking system to locate their friends in danger areas. The Hyderabad-based CWI inspires children to use science to enable them to create solutions for their communities, works to spread awareness about violence and conducts book drives, educates communities on water pollution and helps children improve their reading skills. An Inspiring Young Inventor C French company Airseas, has promised to help cargo (货物) ships reduce their fuel consumption, and cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of 20%. And they’re doing this with the Seawing—a 1,000 square meter kite that will fly 300 meters (984 feet) above the water’s surface. So the globul shipping industry is apparently rediscovering the joy and efficiency of sails. The large, ship-sized kite is currently being developed, and the company plans to open a factory to produce the Seawing in 2026. Once manufactured, Airseas has promised that launching and operating a Seawing on a cargo vessel will be automated, making it easy to use for crews. The kite and the equipment that launches it are mounted on a boat’s deck, and the crew can simply press some buttons and a large kite will rise into the sky. That’s not to say that the cargo ships won’t use their engines at all, but the kite will take some pressure off of those engines and will reduce the need for fuel. The wind will move the ship, just like it did for hundreds of years in the old days before industrialization. Lowering emissions by 20% may not seem like a big deal, but moving vast amounts of goods back and forth on the high seas creates 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s more than the airline industry, which produced about 2% of the world’s emissions in 2021, according to the International Energy Agency. Shipping is also a massive industry, and one worth focusing on for lowering emissions. About 90% of the world’s traded goods are moved around via shipping vessels (大船), according to the International Chamber of Shipping. Some companies are expecting this new version of sails. Japanese shipping company, “K” Line has placed orders for the Seawing kite, and the European Union has also invested more than $2 million in funding. 8. What is French company Airseas trying to do? A. Participate in kite-flying competitions. B. Make sea exploration easy and joyful. C. Produce big kites to be used for sailing D. Ship cargoes with low fuel consumption. 9. What’s the feature of the Seawing? A. It will completely replace engines. B. It will be a light-weight device. C. It will be easily operated by crews. D. It will follow the cargo vessel at sea. 10 Why is the airline industry mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To confirm a prediction. B. To make a comparison. C. To lead in a new topic. D. To analyze cause and effect. 11. What is the best title of the text? A. The shipping industry is getting popular again. B. The GHG emissions are being greatly reduced. C. Seawing factories are to be opened in Europe, D. Kites on boat are helping cut shipping emissions. D Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads. Detroit’s population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Anti-pollution laws and government-supported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants. Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit’s parklands are so quiet that people don’t even know they’re in the city. “It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said JohnHartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to embrace the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you’re going to have to have people on board.” 12. What does the author want to tell us by the example of Detroit? A. It’s government-supported efforts that really matter. B. Humans’ efforts can make a difference in rewilding. C. Humans are to blame for the worsening environment. D. It’s hard for humans and wildlife to live in harmony. 13. What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century? A. The city was overpopulated. B. More community gardens disappeared. C. Many buildings were abandoned. D. The environment was badly damaged. 14. What can we infer about current Detroit from the text? A. It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species. B. Tourists don’t show any interest in its quiet surroundings. C. It’s become a center for those who study animals and plants. D. It’s turned into a place where people can get close to nature. 15. What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph mean? A. Accept. B. Delay. C. Imagine. D. Supervise. How to Make Fitness Your First Priority (首要事情) There is no denying the fact that exercise is an essential part of maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. If you’d told us a month ago that there would come a point when we would need space from each other we would have said “Not a chance!” But then Lisa’s family won a five-day stay in a mountain cabin(小屋). Because Lisa’s sister, Alana, was spending the week with her grandparents, Lisa’s mom and dad said I could come along instead. When I told my parents about the awesome invitation, my mom said, “That sounds fun, but keep in mind that five days is a long time to spend with a friend.” I shook my head. “Lisa and I are just like fish and water. We’re happy sticking together. Plus, the cabin is near paths where we can try snowshoeing and other outdoor stuff.” A few weeks later, Lisa and her parents and I arrived at an adorable cabin surrounded by snow-covered pine trees. “What a great place!” Lisa’s dad said. “It’s looking a little cloudy,” said Lisa’s mom, glancing at the sky. “Let’s hope it means snow and not rain.” As you might have guessed, the clouds did mean rain. Lots of rain. And since our major plans involved snowshoeing and watching winter wildlife, we were stuck. “I guess we’ll have to find something else to do,” said Lisa. We found a couple of board games and a pack of cards and sat down. At first it was fun, but we ended up playing those games for about 100 hours, stopping only to eat and sleep! “I can’t play anymore,” I said on the third day. “How about we just read by ourselves for a while?” “I have a better idea,” said Lisa. “How about singing instead?” “I think a little quiet time would be nice,” I said, opening a book I had brought. “Oh, come on! Don’t be boring. I’ll pick the first song.” Lisa started singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” “Could you please leave me alone?” I shouted. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The fourth day was fine, and we went out to play sometimes together and sometimes apart, just as her father had said. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 阶段测试卷(一) 英语试题 考生注意: 1. 1.What does Michelle want to do? 10. Why is the airline industry mentioned in paragraph 3? C 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段“French company Airseas, has promised to help cargo (货物) ships reduce their fuel consumption, and cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of 20%. And they’re doing this with the Seawing—a 1,000 square meter kite that will fly 300 meters (984 feet) above the water’s surface.(法国公司Airseas承诺帮助货船减少燃料消耗,并将其温室气体排放量平均减少20%。他们正在用一个1000平方米的风筝来做这件事,它将在水面以上300米(984英尺)的地方飞行。)”及第二段首句“The large, ship-sized kite is currently being developed, and the company plans to open a factory to produce the Seawing in 2026.(目前正在开发船舶大小的大型风筝,该公司计划在2026年开设生产Seawing的工厂。)” 根据第二段“Once manufactured, Airseas has promised that launching and operating a Seawing on a cargo vessel will be automated, making it easy to use for crews. The kite and the equipment that launches it are mounted on a boat’s deck, and the crew can simply press some buttons and a large kite will rise into the sky.(一旦制造出来,Airseas承诺在货船上发射和操作Seawing将是自动化的,使其易于船员使用。风筝和发射它的设备安装在船的甲板上,船员只需按几个按钮,一个大风筝就会升上天空。)”可知,在货船上发射和操作 Seawing将是自动化,风等设备就在船的甲板上,船员按几个按钮风筝就能升空。简言之, Seawing 的特点就是容易操作。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Lowering emissions by 20% may not seem like a big deal, but moving vast amounts of goods back and forth on the high seas creates 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s more than the airline industry, which produced about 2% of the world’s emissions in 2021(减少20%的排放量似乎不是什么大事,但在公海上来回运输大量货物产生的温室气体排放量占世界温室气体排放量的3%。这比航空业还要多,航空业在2021年的排放量约占全球的2%)”可知,将排放量减少20%似乎不是什么大不了的事,但在公海上来回运输大量货物造成了世界3%的温室气体排放,这比航空业还多,航空业在2021年的排放量约占世界的2%。由此推断,该段提到航空业是为了进行对比说明。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“French company Airseas, has promised to help cargo (货物) ships reduce their fuel consumption, and cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of 20%. And they’re doing this with the Seawing—a 1,000 square meter kite that will fly 300 meters (984 feet) above the water’s surface.(法国公司Airseas承诺帮助货船减少燃料消耗,并将其温室气体排放量平均减少20%。他们正在用一个1000平方米的风筝来做这件事,它将在水面以上300米(984英尺)的地方飞行。)”可知,文章主要介绍法国Airseas公司正在研发一种在水面上方300米处飞行的1000平方米的风筝,可以帮助轮船降低20%的温室气体排放,因此最好的题目是D选项“Kites on boat are helping cut shipping emissions.(船上的风筝有助于减少航运排放。)”。故选D。 D Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. A. Accept. B. Delay. C. Imagine. D. Supervise. 【答案】12 B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第二段“Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years.(多年来,成千上万的房屋和其他建筑物空置)”可知,21世纪初的底特律许多建筑物都荒废了。 根据第四段““It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said John Hartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur.(“过去,你必须去一些偏远的地方才能接触大自然,”温莎大学(University of Windsor)教授John Hartig说。“现在情况就不一样了。不管你喜不喜欢,野化就在发生。)”可知,现在底特律已经成为了人们亲近大自然的地方。故选D。 【15题详解】 词义猜测题。根据划线词下文“the presence of more and more wildlife.(越来越多的野生动物出现了)”以及“After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife.(毕竟,许多城里人已经失去了与野生动物共处的忍耐力。)”可知,之前的底特律市环境遭到破坏,人们看不到野生动物,而现在越来越多的野生动物出现了;“The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to embrace the presence of more and more wildlife.(问题是我们如何让社区和环境做好准备,embrace越来越多的野生动物。)”指的是,现在面临的问题是如何让社区和环境做好准备,来接受越来越多的野生动物的造访。划线单词“embrace”意为“接受”。故选A项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make Fitness Your First Priority (首要事情) There is no denying the fact that exercise is an essential part of maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. If you’d told us a month ago that there would come a point when we would need space from each other, we would have said “Not a chance!” But then Lisa’s family won a five-day stay in a mountain cabin(小屋). At first, it was fun, but we ended up playing those games for about 100 hours, stopping only to eat and sleep! I’ll pick the first song.” Lisa started singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “Could you please leave me alone?” I shouted. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The fourth day was fine, and we went out to play sometimes together and sometimes apart, just as her father had said. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 “Could you please leave me alone?” I shouted. My voice rang through the cabin, and Lisa stopped singing immediately. She looked at me with surprise and hurt in her eyes. I felt a pang of guilt, but I was desperate for some peace and quiet. “I’m sorry, Lisa,” I said softly. “I just need some time to myself. We’ve been together so much these past few days, I’m starting to feel a little claustrophobic.” Lisa nodded slowly, understanding dawning on her face. “Okay,” she said quietly. “I’ll leave you alone.” She picked up her book and retreated to the other side of the cabin. I felt a sense of relief wash over me as the silence settled in. The fourth day was fine, and we went out to play sometimes together and sometimes apart, just as her father had said. We took turns reading books by the fire or going for hikes in the nearby woods. I found that having some space from Lisa actually enhanced our friendship. We had more to talk about when we were together, and we appreciated each other’s presence more. By the time our trip was over, I realized that sometimes, having a little space from our closest friends can be just as important as spending time with them. 词汇激活 行为类 ①席卷:wash over /flood over ②欣赏:appreciate/admire ③结束:be over/finish 情绪类 ①温和:softly/gently ②惊讶:surprise/astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] I felt a sense of relief wash over me as the silence settled in.(运用了as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] I found that having some space from Lisa actually enhanced our friendship.
