At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer.
Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did.
“At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.
While her publisher describes Come What May as a roadmap for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.
24. What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1?
A. Severe and forbidding. B. Competent and cautious.
C. Friendly and energetic. D. Cheerful and approachable.
25. What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023?
A. The publication of a best seller. B. The growth of professional disaster circles.
C. Her involvement in 2004 tsunami relief. D. Her sudden rise to fame through media.
26. Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3?
A. To reveal Easthope’s personal fears. B. To explain Easthope’s writing process.
C. To show Easthope’s writing motivation. D. To present public doubts about Easthope’s work.
27. What does Easthope agree on handling disasters?
A. Resilience matters most. B. Forgetting aids recovery.
C. Positive thinking takes the lead. D. Minor sufferings deserve attention.
C
Forgetting is a fact of life that many people find frustrating. But growing evidence pushes back at the belief that a slip or escape in our recollection is evidently bad. Indeed, forgetting can sometimes help people cope psychologically or let go of useless knowledge.
In a new study, neuroscientist Tomas Ryan of Trinity College Dublin and his colleagues have examined the fundamental biology underlying a form of forgetting we experience every day. Their work suggests that when we can’t recall an old phone number or a high school teacher’s name, those details are not necessarily lost.
As Ryan explained to Mind Matters editor Daisy Yuhas, forgetting may be an active process that the brain uses to support learning. He also discussed how dementia (痴呆) may ultimately effect disordered forgetting more than lost memories.
You study an idea that some people may find counter-intuitive (反直觉的): forgetting can be part of learning. How so? We often think of forgetting as a loss of the brain power or a limitation. Memory loss from dementia or brain injury, for example, can be devastating. But we also experience “everyday forgetting” as we go about our lives because there’s just so much going on. We’re expected to learn and retain many things in order to function in modern society. Some are quite arbitrary, such as having to memorize facts you’ll never need again for school exams. Others are not so arbitrary but are still quite demanding, such as the knowledge you build to become a practicing doctor.
Although we may think of forgetting as a trouble, and it often is, it could be a feature of the brain rather than a bug. A growing body of research in neuroscience is studying the idea that forgetting is adaptive rather than limiting. So forgetting comes in many forms?
There are different kinds that people generally consider distinct. We may use the word amnesia (健忘症) for a kind of forgetting that most people would agree is neither adaptive nor beneficial. Some forms of amnesia make it difficult to form new memories while others make it difficult to recall memories formed before an injury.
28. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By defining a concept. B. By presenting a study result.
C. By making comparison. D. By giving an example.
29. What does the author agree in the passage?
A. Dementia mainly results in lost memories.
B. Forgetting means imperfection of the brain.
C. It’s terrible that the best friend’s name escapes me.
D. The knowledge you need to be a teacher is not arbitrary.
30. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Scientists think forgetting limits our life.
B. Neuroscientists are researching the adaptive role of forgetting.
C. People would agree that amnesia is harmful in most condition.
D. Amnesia definitely makes it challenging to recollect memories.
31. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the reasons of forgetting. B. To present the process of forgetting.
C. To emphasize the benefits of forgetting. D. To clarify the misunderstanding of forgetting.

The Galle Trilingual Inscription has been officially inscribed (刻写) in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The stele (石碑) was constructed over 600 years ago during Zheng He’s expeditions.
The stele’s rounded top features two dragons playing with a pearl. It is the only one surviving overseas that is related to Zheng’s voyages. It’s still distinguishable today. It tells us that Zheng paid respect to religious sites and made celebration offerings during his visits. Carved in three languages — Chinese, Tamil and Persian — the stele has a historical value beyond words.
“There are many multilingual inscriptions in the world, but most of them are bilingual,” says Wang Hongmin from the National Archives Administration of China. “Among the tri-lingual ones, only two include Chinese. The Galle Trilingual Inscription is the only one inscribed in Chinese, Persian and Tamil.”
The inscription records Zheng’s offerings of equal value to several deities (神祇). “This practice reflects the Zheng’s respect for religious diversity,” says Wang Deyan from the North China University of Technology.
This year marks the 620th anniversary of Zheng’s voyages. The explorer first set sail from Nanjing in 1405 and traveled as far as the eastern coast of Africa. At the time, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) served as a key maritime center in the Indian Ocean. It played a vital role in connecting Asian countries with the Arab world. Wang Deyan added.
“Experts generally agree that Zheng stopped in Ceylon on almost every voyage,” notes Wang Deyan. “He was on cordial terms with the local people. Their interactions not only facilitated cultural exchanges but also laid a solid foundation for trade between China and Ceylon at that time.”
China and Sri Lanka have maintained a long-standing and close partnership in the study and preservation of the Galle Trilingual Inscription. It is a symbol of the historical relationship between the two nations and a reminder to cherish cultural diversity.
32. Why is the Galle Trilingual Inscription special?
A. It is inscribed in three languages. B. It has complicated structure.
C. It was built by local people. D. It can still be recognized.
33. What role does paragraph 5 play in the text?
A. Detailing the stele’s features.
B. Providing historical context.
C. Describing preservation efforts.
D. Highlighting international cooperations.
34. Which can replace the underlined phrase in paragraph 6?
A. Deeply absorbed by. B. In cautious reliance on.
C. Constantly disturbed by. D. In a friendly relationship with.
35. What can be inferred about the stele from the last paragraph?
A. It shows cultural ties. B. It is newly discovered.
C. It is stored in two countries. D. It records conflicts between nations.

第二节(满分25分)

It was a typical busy noon at the downtown fast-food spot. The smell of sizzling patties and crispy fries lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with folks rushing to grab a quick meal. I’d just gotten off a long morning at work, and my stomach was empty as I finally reached the front of the line and got my order-a burger, fries, and a cold drink.
As I set the tray (托盘) down on a small table by the window, I glanced over and saw two firefighters in the corner. Their uniforms were heavy with faint spots, like they’d just stepped away from a smoky scene, and their boots still held a hint of damp from the morning dew. They stood in the back of the line, shoulders relaxed but eyes tired.
I was just about to pick up my burger-the cheese melted perfectly-when a loud, sharp siren (警报) cut through the noise of the restaurant. The two firefighters froze for half a second, and then moved. No hesitation, no exchange of words — just muscle memory. One grabbed his helmet off the nearby counter, the other adjusted his radio on his shoulder, and they turned toward the door, their steps quickening. I watched them go, and my fork paused mid-air.
My empty stomach served as a quiet reminder of how long I’d waited for this meal. I’d stood in that line for 15 minutes, my feet aching from the morning’s work. Giving them my lunch meant I would have to wait again-maybe another line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thought of their uniforms, the spots, the way they’d act upon hearing the siren like it was a call they couldn’t ignore. They didn’t get to pause for a meal when emergencies hit. They’d probably go hours without eating, running from one call to the next.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My hesitation melted away.

【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据后两款风扇的描述: HandFan Portable Misting Fan:“you can even wear it around your neck (你甚至可以把它戴在脖子上)”,戴在脖子上意味着无需用手持有,即“免手持”; Jisulife Portable Neck Fan:“ideal for travelers who want to go hands-free while sightseeing (非常适合想在观光时免手持的旅行者)”,直接提及“免手持(hands-free)”。 由此可知,两款风扇的共同特点是“使用时可免手持”。故选C项。

【答案】24. A 25. A 26. C 27. D
根据第一段中“At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly... (乍一看,Easthope不太像一位Cassandra。她笑容满面。她的举止亲切、充满母性)”可知,作者将Easthope的外在表现与“Cassandra”进行对比,Easthope给人的印象是亲切的、面带微笑的,因此与之相反的“Cassandra”形象应更偏向于严肃、令人敬畏的。故选A项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did. (但在2023年,她出版了一本关于她职业生涯的畅销书《尘埃落定时》,情况发生了变化。人们开始对她所做的工作非常感兴趣)”可知,2023年公众对Easthope工作认知度的提高,源于她出版了一本畅销书。故选A项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.(“人们想从我这里知道的,是我如何带着我所掌握的那些认知生活。
根据最后一段中“Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. (伊斯索普还提醒人们,一些小事,比如生病时脱发或某人去世后暴饮暴食,仍然很重要)”可知,伊斯索普认为微小的痛苦(小事情)也值得关注。故选D项。
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. B 31. D

___37___. When trying to solve a problem or make a decision, your mind often falls back on solutions that have worked in the past instead of figuring out new ones. Seemingly not like a huge problem, it can have major consequences according to some research. For example, people who have jobs like air traffic control can make potentially disastrous errors as a result of change blindness.
___39___. In the process. we twist reality to protect our self-esteem (自尊) — in other words, we don’t want to admit it when we mess up. Why do we participate. in the blame game? Researchers believe it’s to safeguard our self-esteem and shield ourselves from the fear of failure.___40___

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My hesitation melted away.

I went back to the counter, only to find the manager was waiting for me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 My hesitation melted away. I grabbed the tray and hurried after the two firefighters, calling out softly, “Excuse me!” They paused at the door, turning with slight surprise. I held out the tray, smiling, “You guys must be in a rush — take this. It’s not much, but it’ll keep you going.” One of them hesitated for a second, then nodded gratefully, taking the tray. “Thank you, really,” he said, before they rushed out into the street, the siren growing louder as they went. I stood there for a moment, my stomach still growling, but my chest felt light.
I went back to the counter, only to find the manager was waiting for me. He smiled warmly, holding up a new tray with a burger, fries, and a drink. “Saw what you did for the firefighters,” he said, handing it over. “This one’s on the house. We need more people like you.” I was shocked, then grateful, taking the tray. “Thank you so much,” I replied. As I sat back down by the window, biting into the burger, the taste felt sweeter than before. Sometimes, giving up a small thing didn’t just help others — it filled your own heart, too.
