Hiking the Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) in southern China is something I would advise everyone to do. The area covers over 16,000 acres, with their creation beginning during the Yuan Dynasty. If you translate it, the name means “Dragon’s Backbone” because of the fact that the rice terraces look just like a dragon’s scales (鳞), while the top of the mountain looks like its backbone.
I began my visit from Ping’an, a small village, as I had stayed at the “Li Qing Guesthouse”. From where the bus drops you off you will pass shops, and then you will hike up to get to the guesthouse. It’s really hard, especially with your bag on, but the view of the hill and rice terraces from your bedroom window is really great. The people are also very helpful and friendly as they helped my group to get a guide for the Longji Rice Terraces hike. The rooms have air conditioning and an in-room bathroom. Moreover, the food is delicious, and you can choose either Western comfort food or local Zhuang food.
From Ping’an I hiked for 5 hours through the Longji Rice Terraces to the village of Dazhai. During the trip not only will you view nature at its most breathtaking, but you’ll also get the chance to see colorfully dressed local Zhuang and Yao women working in the fields. The terraces are dotted with small homes, and since I was with a local guide I got the chance to stop for lunch in one of them. It was really beyond all expectations that the woman would go out into the field s to “pick our lunch” before preparing a delicious meal of rice, egg, sweet potato leaves, and new potatoes(just like in America!). Although the break was nice, I honestly couldn’t wait to get back to the trip and continue immersing (沉浸) myself in the beauty of the rice terraces. The only real way I can describe it is that you’ll feel like you’re on another planet, as scenery that beautiful is just unworldly.
4. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The advice the author offers on hiking.
B. The background of the Longji Rice Terraces.
C. The popularity of the Longji Rice Terraces.
D. The reason why the author travels around China.
5. What did the author think of the place where he lived in Ping’an?
A. He thought it was boring.
B. He thought it was hard to find.
C. He thought it was satisfying.
D. He thought it was cleverly designed.
6. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A travel magazine.
B. A history paper.
C. A geography textbook.
D. An environment report.

Seven out of 10 families don’t sit down together for dinner every night, with many unwilling to put down their phones and turn off the TV to eat, a survey shows.
Almost half of Australian families try hard to find enough to talk about over dinner, and may end up arguing instead of conversing, the survey of 1,000 grown-ups shows. The research shows 80 per cent of families sometimes sit in silence, and 92 per cent say their digital devices stop them talking to each other.
The study suggests work is impacting on family togetherness, with fewer than a quarter of parents who work full-time eating most nights with their children.
Overall, four in 10 Australian parents say their families find it hard to connect and share conversations at dinnertime, with television, mobile phones and computers, and tiredness most often getting in the way of this.
However, the research, which was officially asked for by food company Old El Paso, shows many parents want to do things differently, with 95 per cent agreeing that conversation improves a meal. Scientist Jocelyn Brewer said the findings show the way Australian life is getting busier and more stressful for families.
“It’s not surprising to hear that 97 per cent of parents like meals better where their family can laugh connect, tell stories and share food,” she said.
The survey has also shown the most common dinnertime topic is what’s going on at school or work (74 per cent), followed by weekend plans (59 per cent). Only one in 10 parents like politics to be discussed.
All parents surveyed said they would like tools such as conversation cards to help improve their mealtimes.
7. What does the underlined part “impacting on” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Affecting. B. Encouraging.
C. Suffering. D. Improving.
8. What does the survey among Australian families show?
A. About half of them say they eat dinner silently.
B. Nearly all of them suggest not using phones over dinner.
C. Nearly half of them find it hard to make conversations over dinner.
D. A quarter of them hopes to have pleasant conversations over dinner.
9. Which of the following is talked about most at dinnertime?
A Eating habits. B. School life.
C. What to do at weekends. D. What has happened in society.
10. What is the best title for the text?
A. Family dinners and stressful life
B. The importance of family dinners
C. Digital devices take up family dinnertime
D. Family dinner talks at risk of dying out

How do clouds form?
The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can’t see the water. ____11____ They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets to start to stick to things like bits of ice.
What are some kinds of clouds?
____12____ One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth’s surface. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds. Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are so light that they float in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops. When that happens, gravity causes them to fall to Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”.
Why do scientists study clouds?
Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. ____15____
A. What causes rain?
B. Why are clouds white?

“It’s not surprising to hear that 97 per cent of parents like meals better where their family can laugh, connect, tell stories and share food,” she said.
The survey has also shown the most common dinnertime topic is what’s going on at school or work (74 per cent), followed by weekend plans (59 per cent). Only one in 10 parents like politics to be discussed.
All parents surveyed said they would like tools such as conversation cards to help improve their mealtimes.

What are clouds
A cloud is made of water drops in the sky. There are many kinds of clouds, which are an important part of Earth’s weather.
Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds are high clouds. They look like feathers. ____13____ These clouds look like huge cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
____14____
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are so light that they float in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops. When that happens, gravity causes them to fall to Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”.
Why do scientists study clouds?
Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. ____15____
A. What causes rain?
B. Why are clouds white?
C. Cumulus clouds are middle clouds.
D. Clouds get their names in two ways.
E. The drops of water are too small to see.
F. However, other planets have clouds that are not made of water.
G. Studying clouds helps scientists better understand Earth’s weather.
