Dictionaries are really helpful in learning English. If you get a good
English dictionary, you will be 41 than 90% of English learners. But
most people simply go to a bookstore and buy the first dictionary they see.
That is a big 42 ! A bad dictionary will give you problems sooner
or later—maybe in two months, maybe in one year—and you will have to
buy a good one 43 ! Isn’t it better to buy a good dictionary at first?

program—you only need to spend a little money. Once you’ve made the first
step, it will be easier for you to do the 48 .
You need to spend some 49 . This is a good thing. Spending some of

A father-son pair caught everyone’s eye during Xin’anjiang Marathon in
November, 2022. Luo Shujian pushed a three-wheeled cart carrying his son
Xiaobai.
Xiaobai was diagnosed with an illness six months after he was born in
2009. The doctor said Xiaobai needed lifelong care.

Xiaobai cannot speak. When he goes out, someone must be with him
all the time. So most of the time, he has to stay at home. One day, Luo
read the story of Dick Hoyt. Dick Hoyt’s son Rick was similar to Xiaobai,
but Dick Hoyt took Rick to take part in over 1,000 races.
To put the idea into practice, Luo began to go for long runs early in the
morning on workdays. On weekends, he took Xiaobai along with him. The
pair had their first try at the 7-kilometer race in the 2015 Hangzhou
Marathon. Xiaobai was quite excited during the race. Over the years they
have taken part in over 50 races.
Luo says taking part in the races is a good chance for him to take
Xiaobai to visit different places and make Xiaobai’s life more enjoyable.
Xiaobai can feel the warmth of life through the races.

Do small children seem to learn more quickly than adults? It’s true that
children learn very quickly. In just a few years, they can learn how to play a
musical instrument, speak one or even two new languages and deal with
many subjects at school. They even have time for sports and hobbies.
However, how much of this is because of social pressure? Children’s
brains have the natural ability to get new information, but many of their
achievements are because of social pressure. Schools make them take many
subjects. Parents make them practice new sports or learn music. In a word,
children may not enjoy learning.

Are adults really poor learners? I disagree! They can remember many
new things and learn by setting aside time for reading or practice. Adults
usually cannot learn to do ballet or to play the violin, but their motivation
can often be greater than a child’s. But our society does not encourage many
adults to learn. People are busy with families and work, and some adults
may feel that further learning is useless because they have already achieved
many goals at work or in their personal life.
In a word, I feel that we can’t say children or adults are better learners.
It depends on the situation and the motivation of the person.

One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you
should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see some things
when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about
“How would I say them in English?”. At first, it might be with simple
words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and
sentences. Now I’m in America, and most of the time, I would think in
English and say it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.

At first I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I
didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in
America, I would try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese
so that I would have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if
I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then let it be. After
that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at
the way you’re writing, and they can give you some suggestions.

Zhang Jianna is a 49-year-old city cleaner from Chaoyang, Beijing.
She has studied English alone for about 10 years. Now she can speak English
with people from foreign countries and help them when they are in need.
Zhang became interested in learning English in 2014. She worked in the
Sanlitun embassy(大使馆) area at that time. One day, when she was
working, a man from another country asked her for help. But she didn’t
know what he was saying and couldn’t give a hand. After that, she decided
to learn English so that she could help foreign friends.

words. Zhang also learns English by making conversations with her children
in English. With her children’s help, she uses her cell phone to learn English
when she has time.

At first, I downloaded(下载) very short stories. They were about

had read several wonderful stories by Somerset Maugham in Russian. And it

ideas of those stories, it would be easier for me to understand these stories
by listening. I have been listening to Maugham’s works for one week every
day while walking to college. I like these clever stories. In my opinion, it is
a very useful way to improve my listening.
