What you’ll need
· A glass of water(about three
quarters full)
· A piece of white paper
· A sunny day
Instructions
· Take the glass of water and the
paper to a part of the room with
sunlight(better near a window). What’s happening?
· While you usually see a rainbow in
the sky, it can also appear in other
situations. You may have seen a
rainbow in a water fountain(喷泉)
or in the middle of a waterfall and
you can even make your own in this
experiment.

· Hold the glass of water above the
paper and watch as sunlight passes
through the glass of water. The
sunlight is refracted(使光线折射)
and forms a rainbow of colours on
your piece of paper.
· Try holding the glass of water at
different heights and angles to see
what may happen. · Rainbows form in the sky when the
sunlight is refracted as it passes
through raindrops: it acts in the
same way when it passes through a
glass of water. The sunlight is
refracted, so you can see colours
like red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo and violet.

B(2023·宿迁市宿豫区期中改编)
There is a place in the world where there is fresh green grass and
hundreds of wild flowers with water running into little pools and birds
making their homes in boxes. That is Augustenborg Botanical Roof Garden.
The 9,500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Roof Garden may look
just like any other well-organized park, but there’s a difference. It lies on
the roofs of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.
一
二
三
四
五
六
Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular
again. The common roofs of a modern city have endless black surfaces(表
面) with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes
such a perfect choice for more people.
Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city
temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in summer can make
top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making
the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban
heat-island effect”. On a green roof, however, with its plants and
water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can
greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
一
二
三
四
五
六
Also, a green roof takes in rainwater, and protects the city drainage
system(排水系统). And small animals and birds can make their
homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather
than something completely separate from it.
While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be
lower in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn’t it be
wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and
traffic, whether you’re at school, in an office or just at home in a ten-floor
block?

Human activities are changing the surface and temperature of our planet.
But new research shows that it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas.
Scientists say that these changes affect(影响) many sea animals—from
very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to
sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with
each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their
hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive(生存).
一
二
三
四
五
六
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these
animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic,
underwater oil and gas exploration, and other noisy human activities. For
many sea animals, their efforts to communicate are being masked(被掩
盖) by sounds that humans have introduced. Experts explain the term
masking, which happens when one or more noises in the water block sound
important to an ocean animal’s life.
一
二
三
四
五
六
The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important shipping passages. It
is full of large ships travelling to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Some fish and
other animals now avoid the noisiest areas. Also, the overall number of sea
animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood.
However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The
stress from human noise might also affect the immune(免疫) system—an
animal’s natural defense system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels
of stress because of noise.
一
二
三
四
五
六
When people think of threats(威胁) to the ocean, we often think of
climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another
necessary thing we need to be monitoring. When it comes to something
humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter.
Noise pollution may be easier to deal with than any other ocean threat. You
can reduce or turn off sound immediately. It’s not like plastics or climate
change, which are much harder to undo.

Dr Dolittle lived in a small town called Puddleby. Everyone in the town
knew him. The dogs and children ran after him.
He lived in a small house, but he had a large garden. He kept many
animals in his garden. His favourite animals were Dab-Dab the duck, Jip
the dog, Gub-Gub the baby pig and Polynesia the parrot. He also kept some
fish, rabbits, cats, a squirrel, a cow and a baby cow, a horse,
chickens and so on.

Dr Dolittle didn’t have many patients. Most people didn’t like all of his
animals, so when they were ill, they went to a doctor in another town.
“But you don’t have any money,” his sister told him. “You need
patients.”
“I have a patient,” Dr Dolittle answered. “The Cat’s-meat-Man.
He’s the man who sells me meat for the cat.”
“He doesn’t pay you enough to live on,” his sister told him.
“Then I’ll sell everything I have,” he said.

And he did. He sold most of his furniture. He also sold most of his
clothes. Then he had enough money to buy food for himself and his animals.
One day, the Cat’s-meat-Man said to him, “Why don’t you stop
being a doctor for people and become a doctor for animals instead? I’m sure
that you know a lot about animals—more than most vets. You wrote a
wonderful book about cats. I’d send all the people with sick dogs or cats to
you.”

When the Cat’s-meat-Man left, Polynesia, the parrot, flew onto the
table. “He’s right, Doctor,” Polynesia said. “You should become an
animal doctor.”
“There are a lot of vets,” Dr Dolittle said.
“Perhaps there are a lot of vets. But you’d be the best vet of all. I’m not
the only animal that can talk. All the animals can talk. Each kind of animal
has its own language. I’ll teach you mine if you like.”

“Yes, please,” Dr Dolittle said. He opened a drawer and took out a
notebook and pencil. “Will you teach me the parrots’ ABC first?” he asked.
Polynesia agreed to teach Dr Dolittle the parrots’ language. Later that
day, Jip came into the room. Polynesia said, “He’s talking to you,
Doctor.”
“I don’t think he is,” Dr Dolittle said. “He’s just scratching(挠)
himself.”

“Dogs talk with their ears, their noses, and their tails,” Polynesia
told him. They don’t always make a noise. Do you see how he is moving his
nose now?”
“Yes.”
“He is telling us that it has stopped raining, and he wants to ask you a
question.”
Every day, Dr Dolittle learned the languages of the animals. When
people found out he was now an animal doctor, they brought their sick pets
to him.

One day, a horse said to him, “You’re a much better animal doctor
than the vet. You knew I couldn’t see well, and you made glasses for me.”
The horse was very pleased. He could see very well. He told all his
friends how clever Dr Dolittle was, and they told all their friends. Soon,
many animals came to see him. He had a different door for each animal, and
he wrote the name of each kind of animal above each door. HORSES,
COWS ...
Before long, every animal that lived in or near the town became the
doctor’s patient. He was very happy, and he liked his life very much.

How to face Grade Nine
We have been here in Grade Nine. Some of us feel good, while some
do not. How should we face this year?
Face the year bravely. It is you who shape your life and future!
First of all, we need to develop healthy living habits. Get enough
sleep and avoid staying up late. Get up early and exercise every day.
Secondly, we should cultivate excellent personal qualities. Always be
confident and never give up. And we should study hard and be careful.
What’s more, we should pay attention to every detail. Last but not
least, we should improve our ability to solve problems. When we have
too much homework, we can make a list. If we have exams, we should
review what we have learned carefully. When we are discouraged, we
can use the orange colour, because it can motivate us.
