In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father
making a little money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to
understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job
at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late night.
I can’t forget that he played with me when I was 3~4 years old. He
taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all
night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He
also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations.
Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed
money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies.

Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I helped
my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first
salary(薪水) which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I
spent it all on myself.
When I returned home one fine morning, I heard my father
communicating with one neighbour. He was telling him my success in the job
very proudly. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him at the end
of his work. A dream that his son should become better than himself came
true.

I was unable to move on my feet. Past 23 years flashed into my mind in

decisions my father made in the past. The financial(经济) difficulty he
was facing was decided by his goal—making his child more successful than
himself.
If today I am successful, this is because of my father.

For me, one of the greatest pleasures in life is going to watch a great
film at the cinema. It’s a chance for me to get away from real life. There’s
nothing better than being lost in a story unless, of course, someone
decides to break the moment.
Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to
treat the place like his or her own home! There is an unacceptable way of
behaving at the cinema that some people don’t seem to understand.

To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise
from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the
surrounding sound effects, someone begins to enjoy his or her drinks and
popcorn and thus makes a lot of noise. And I can’t stand that people decide to
chat to their friends, sometimes even not about the film.
I’m not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo, a film critic at the
BBC, experienced a “new low” during a film. He said, “The woman
in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used
the light on it to allow her to put on her make-up!”

Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should
behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another
is not to take your shoes off—the most serious offence(冒犯)!
Of course, when we have paid for a ticket, we feel it is our right to
relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to, but we mustn’t forget our
fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience too. The best
choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a
DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art
of cinematography is on the big screen. ▲
What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?

It was a stormy night. The thunder was tremendous(巨大的) and the
lightning was so vivid that the sky seemed on fire.
Pinocchio had a great fear of thunder and lightning, but hunger was far
greater than fear. So he closed the door and made a rush for the village. But
when he arrived at the village, he found it was dark and ▲ . The stores
were all closed. In the streets, not even a dog could be seen. It seemed to be
the land of the dead.

Pinocchio took hold of the bell of a house and began to ring it with all
his strength, saying to himself, “Someone will surely answer that!”
He was right. An old man in a nightcap opened the window and shouted
at him angrily, “What do you want at such an hour?”
“Would you be kind enough to give me a little bread?” asked
Pinocchio.

“Wait a minute and I will come right back,” said the old man,
thinking it was one of those naughty(淘气的) boys who amused(娱乐)
themselves at night by ringing the bell to wake people who were sleeping
quietly up.
After a minute, the window was again opened and the same voice
cried, “Get under the window and hold out your cap.”
Pinocchio pulled off his cap, but just as he held it out, a basin(盆)
of water was poured down on him, wetting him from head to foot.

He returned home like a wet chicken. He was very tired and hungry. As
he no longer had any strength left to stand, he sat down on a small chair and
put his feet on the stove(火炉) to dry them. Then he fell asleep. When he
slept, his wooden feet began to burn, and little by little they burnt away.
At daybreak he was woken up by someone who knocked at the door.
“Who is it?” he asked.
“It is me!” answered a voice.

Poor Pinocchio, who was still half asleep, had not yet discovered that
his feet disappeared. As soon as he heard his father’s voice, he jumped up
from his seat to open the door. But as he did so, he fell down on the floor
heavily.
“Open the door for me!” shouted Geppetto from the street.
“Dear Father, I can’t,” answered Pinocchio, crying and rolling
about on the ground.
“Why can’t you?”
“Because someone has eaten my feet.”

“And who has eaten them?”
“The cat. Oh, poor me! I shall have to walk on my knees for the rest

Geppetto thought it was only one of Pinocchio’s tricks. He climbed up
the wall and went in through the window. At first, he was very angry. But
when he saw Pinocchio lying on the ground really without feet, he was very
sad. He took him in his arms and kissed him. He cried sadly and said, “My
little Pinocchio! How did you burn your feet?”
“I don’t know, Father, but it has been such a terrible night that I
shall remember it as long as I live.”

Most people hope to have a better memory which helps them succeed in
study, work and life. 46 Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50
years have already given us a clear answer.
A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp.
First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich
in vitamin B and vitamin E helps you have a better memory.
Doing exercise can keep your brain alive too. Proper exercise provides
much needed oxygen for the brain. Running, swimming and even walking
three times a week are helpful.
一
二
三
四
五
六
47 Only when your brain gets a good rest can it work well. The
healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become. But do not
expect a sudden change—it takes a long time to make a difference.
48 There are some widely used skills.
Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it
into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit telephone number
212 798 3630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then
798, and lastly 3630. It is far more effective than remembering a string of
10 digits.
一
二
三
四
五
六
Organization means organizing information into groups of the same
kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals.
Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by using your
imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.
Teaching is a simple way to train our brains to be more effective. 49 .
Teaching strengthens the understanding. So teach the concepts to someone
else. It can be a real person in a study group, or you can just imagine that
someone is listening to you as you teach.
一
二
三
四
五
六
In fact, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the
information. What’s more, only a regular review(复习) can make the
memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what
they have learnt after one day and then after three days, 50

My favourite hobby
I like films best, especially English films. Why?
Firstly, I can learn many English words and practise listening
and speaking by watching English films. Secondly, most of the English
films are educational. Some of them can make us more confident. Some
tell us to be a brave man. Thirdly, I can know some famous actors and
actresses. Some of them are from China and some of them come from
different parts of the world. Everyone has his or her own personalities.
Finally, I can also learn more about the culture of England and
America.
However, there is a problem. I have no time to watch films
because of too much homework. I hope to balance the relationship
between study and hobbies.
