The twenty — something girl not only writes poems as a form of entertainment in her spare time, but also improvises (即兴创作) poems for others at night markets in Yunnan.
As a “street-stall poet”, Gehuaren often writes pieces of poetry quickly based on themes given by customers. There’re plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available in local markets. But while those red juicy strawberries look fresh, consumers have no way of knowing how long the fruit can be stored at home. The same goes for distribution centers and supermarkets.
Now, the food technology startup One Third, located in the Netherlands, is looking to change that with an infrared (红外线) scanner that can accurately predict how long fresh fruits and vegetables will last. The startup is named One Third because one-third of food is wasted due to spoilage (变质) every year.
The startup’s founders were inspired by a UK company that uses this type of technology in the medical field and decided to see if it was applicable for food. “I looked at the challenges in the food-supply chain and found out that 40 percent of food waste is fresh produce. One of the biggest causes of waste is that nobody knows shelf life.” founder and CEO of One Third, Marco Snickers said.
Quality inspections at farms and distribution centers are done manually (手动地). An inspector checks the fruits and vegetables and makes notes about the size and quality. Then the food is sent to consumers without considering travel time or how long the produce will remain usable.
Using the infrared scanner at the distribution center means that inspectors can use the information to approve shipments that will ensure the produce can be distributed on a timely basis. This means that a shipment of ripe tomatoes will not be sent long distances away.
One Third’s scanner combınes the technology of optical scanners, image modeling, and Artificial Intelligence to provide accurate shelf-life predictions.
The startup found that the technology can reduce up to 25 percent produce waste that was caused by spoilage. “Global food waste has an enormous environmental impact, reducing global food waste cuts global greenhouse gas emissions and promotes global food security,” said Jacob Smith, a climate expert from the University of Maine.
8. What problem does One Third aim to solve?
A. The high cost of storing fresh fruits and vegetables.
B. Inefficient quality inspections at distribution centers.
C. Food waste caused by uncertainty about its shelf life.
D Consumers’ difficulty judging the freshness of produce.
9. What inspired One Third to come up with the idea of using infrared scanner?
A. The use of the device in another field.
B. Observation of the food-supply chain.
C. Consumer demands for fresher produce.
D. Experts’ advice on food waste reduction.
10. What can we learn about the manual quality inspections?
A. They are time-consuming and costly.
B. They are not performed at a regular time.
C. The inspectors tend to make wrong judgement.
D. The shipping time is not taken into consideration.
11. In what column of a magazine can the text be taken from?
A. Education. B. Science. C. Entertainment. D. Lifestyle.

Protecting marine (海洋的) animals is crucial for the health and balance of our oceans, since they play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, serving as food sources; contributing to nutrient cycling, and maintaining biodiversity. However, human activities such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution pose significant threats to these creatures, so effective conservation measures should be taken to change for the better.
Most people know about the friendly voices of dolphins and the blue songs of humpback whales, but what about the hundreds of thousands of other creatures that live in the sea? Scientists estimate that over 100 types of marine mammals, as well as 1,000 different fish species, generate sounds. Additionally, many sea creatures produce passive sounds while eating, swimming, or crawling along the sea floor. A group of international scientists is now joining forces to create a library of all the unique sounds that animals living under the sea make.
The Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds, or GLUBS, will be an open-source collection of the signature sounds created by sea creatures. The team will use existing libraries of sea sounds and expand upon these to create a more comprehensive collection. The platform will also include AI algorithms (算法) that can detect and classify different sounds, which will allow scientists to produce species distribution maps.
When asked about the motivation for this project, Miles Parsons, one of the project’s leaders, pointed to the worldwide decline in biodiversity. By examining the sounds coming from bodies of water, scientists can monitor the changes in the distribution and diversity of various ecosystems. Studying the sounds could also be used to identify new species. Parsons explained that many of the world’s most extensive habitats are aquatic (水生的). GLUBS could be a great resource in helping preserve water species around the world.
12. Which of the following is true about sea creature sounds?
A. It is difficult to distinguish eating sounds.
B. Only 1,000 different fish species produce sounds.
C. Little is known about the sounds of marine animals.
D Scientists don’t have to create sound libraries from zero.
13. How will AI be used in the library?
A. It will be used to create new aquatic sounds.
B. It is needed when scientists distribute maps.
C. It helps manage the number of species in the sea.
D. It can help sort out the different collected sounds.
14. What reason did Miles Parsons give for creating the sound library?
A. Biodiversity is decreasing around the world.
B. It is difficult to record the sound s of sea creatures.
C. We should keep the balance and preserve the ocean.
D. Fishermen could use the sounds to help them catch more fish.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A scientific research assisted by AI.
B. Sounds Created by the Marine Animals.
C. GLUBS: A Sound Library of the Sea.
D. Sharp decline in global biodiversity.

Looking back on it now, all I can remember is pain that never seemed to end. I could do nothing except lie motionless and beg my body to stop hurting.
The memory of doctors, nurses, and the conclusion of appendicitis (阑尾炎) was still clear. Based on my experience, nothing hurt more than three days with appendicitis, but after an emergency surgery, a severe flu, and stomach infection, the nurse had to come in every six hours to check my condition.
I lost my appetite. I was simply not hungry, and was often not allowed to eat because of the possibility of more surgery. I lost twenty pounds. All the muscle that had taken years of swimming to acquire was eaten away. Before the operations, 1 could swim miles daily, Now it was an effort to sit up. When I finally did accomplish walking, it was only a few steps leaning on my parents.
Through all this, the knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to swim again for almost three months mentally broke me down. When I finally got back in the pool, I struggled with my newly limited ability and the frustration of disappointment. Race after race, I fell short of my goals. Every time I attempted to enter the national competitions, I failed by a tiny amount. It was upsetting-so close, yet so far.
Finally, I came to the last event that could qualify me for nationals. My last chance. I couldn’t help but feel extremely angry about what I had been through. This was my last shot: now or never.
Swimmers learn at an early age that to swim well you must take everything in one blow, because eighty seconds of the hardest work will be worth it later. You learn to love every second of it, because otherwise, you’ll never make it. You have to believe.
When my name was called, my fear melted away like a stick of hot butter. I mumbled (低声说), “I can’t be absent-minded during my race; the pool owns everything for that moment. I can’t mess up.”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1: The race started, and I dived into the pool.

D. Scientists don’t have to create sound libraries from zero.

How to Get Close to Classics
Many people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language being too difficult and end with the storyline too distant to the present context. ____16____. It is a gradual affair. We begin as acquaintances and eventually become close friends with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic?
Don’t be afraid to be confused.
We get it: it’s hard to power through confusion. It doesn’t feel great when a book makes you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. ____17____. Instead, be proud of yourself for trying, and get excited about all the new things you’ll learn.
Research, research, research.
____18____. Researching the author and the time and place they were writing about can help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author’s experience, viewpoint, and historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise.
____19____.
This step is self-explanatory. While it ‘s not hard to just pick a book up, we know how difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. Remind yourself that it’s a new learning chance. Take a deep breath, then leap onto the deck of Melville’s Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Castle Dracula.
Remember: there is no right answer.
There is no perfect way to read a classic text. There is no fixed interpretation and no exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects are meaningful to you. Just enjoy the process. ____20____!
A. Before you turn to page one, do some digging
B Just pick the book up and get down to reading
C. Love for classics is obviously not at first sight
D. A good start can help you get out of the confusion

Finally I came to the last event that could qualify me for nationals. My last chance. I couldn’t help but feel extremely angry about what I had been through. This was my last shot: now or never.
Swimmers learn at an early age that to swim well, you must take everything in one blow, because eighty seconds of the hardest work will be worth it later. You learn to love every second of it, because otherwise, you’ll never make it. You have to believe.
When my name was called, my fear melted away like a stick of hot butter. I mumbled (低声说), “I can’t be absent-minded during my race; the pool owns everything for that moment. I can’t mess up.”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1: The race started, and I dived into the pool.

Paragraph 2: When I saw my time, a wave of relief swept over me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The race started, and I dived into the pool. I kicked off the wall with a surge of energy, propelling myself forward. With each stroke, I pushed the memories of pain and frustration aside. My mind emptied of everything except the sensation of the water against my skin and the drive to reach the other end. As I turned at the halfway point, I felt a surge of power within me, a reminder of the strength I had regained. I pushed harder, my heart pounding with my strokes.
When I saw my time, a wave of relief swept over me. I had not only qualified for nationals but also achieved a personal best. Tears welled up in my eyes. As I emerged from the pool, surrounded by cheers and applause, I knew that I had conquered more than just a race. I had overcome the greatest obstacle of all myself. And in that victory, I found a renewed love for swimming and a deeper appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit.
