I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw
attention. She was not tall 1 looked ordinary. In class, she liked sitting
at the back, reading or writing notes.
One day I asked her 2 aloud the text. When I heard her standard(标准的) American English, I looked at her with new eyes. And I remembered her name—Kelly. Later on, the National College Speech Competition would be held. One student in our school 3 to attend. I thought it over and chose her. Kelly practised 400 for the competition. However, I was a little worried 5 she was always too quiet. Could she really 6 well in the competition?

7 the night of the competition, I sat in the front row of the hall
very early. I told her to take it easy. Her face turned red and she said
nothing. 8 seemed that she was really nervous. I felt upset, but I just
patted her on 9 shoulder and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a
result, she drew No.9 while No.8 was a boy who was very good at giving
speeches.
Sure enough, No.8 was very 10 . The whole audience made a

While they 11 about his speech with excitement, Kelly appeared
on the stage. I had no courage to look at her. It was her 12 time going up
on the stage, so I couldn’t be angry with her for any small mistakes. But at
that moment, I found 13 I was so afraid of her failure(失败).
The strong spotlight and large hall made 14 appear so small that
nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage. I felt hopeless.
But the moment 15 surprised me came. I clearly heard a voice, a
very loud voice, “Now, please focus on me.” Three times in all,
louder and louder. The whole audience fell silent.

If you love reading books, you must know about the book The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The book is quite interesting and
popular among kids. Even if I am an adult now, the book is 16 one of
my favourites. After re-reading the book recently, I have 17 an
important lesson from Tom Sawyer.

In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring 18 .
What’s in your mind when your mother 19 you to do some chores?
Have you ever wanted to complain(抱怨)? I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, had a different thought when he was given a
boring task. One day, Aunt Polly told Tom to 20 the fence(篱笆).
Tom was doing his job, when his friend Ben Rogers happened to pass by.
Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt “ 21 ” about the
task. “Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do
this!” Tom said.
一

Tom’s words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his
apple so that he could have a 22 to paint the fence. If Tom had thought
about 23 but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the
fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is 24 . The
next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don’t complain. Unlike what
happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come
and do the work for you. So, don’t complain, 25 you’ll feel better
and perhaps even do a better job!

Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter
from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I
am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened
me. I thought he was saying, “We’re kind of pleased that you decided to
join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that
in American English, “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in
British English it means “fairly”.

So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the
language and I don’t just mean the words people speak. It also includes body
language, dress codes, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do
things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface—hairstyles,
food and hours of work, while others may be deeper and take longer to deal
with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and
accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.
一

Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more
polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it
happens immediately. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality. If you invite people to a party at 7 o’clock, your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the time when people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.

He wanted three months in a nice, warm prison, with food and good
friends. This was how he usually spent his winters. And now it was time,
because, at night on his seat in the square, three newspapers did not keep
out the cold.
So Soapy decided to go to prison, and at once began to try his first
plan. It was usually easy. He ate dinner in an expensive restaurant. Then he
told them he had no money and they called a policeman. Nice and easy,
with no trouble.

So Soapy left his seat, and walked slowly along the street. Soon he
came to a bright restaurant on Broadway. Ah! This was all right. He just had
to get to a table in the restaurant and sat down. That was all, because,
when he sat down, people could only see his coat and his shirt, which
were not very old. Nobody could see his trousers. He thought about the
meal—not too expensive, but good.
But when Soapy went into the restaurant, the waiter saw Soapy’s dirty
old trousers and terrible shoes. Strong hands turned him round and helped
him out into the street again.

Now he had to think of something different. Soapy walked away from
Broadway and soon he found himself on Six Avenue. He stopped in front of a
shop’s window and looked at it. It was nice and bright, and everybody in
the street could see him. Slowly and carefully he picked up a stone and threw
it at the window. The glass broke with a loud noise. Soapy didn’t move and
smiled. “I’ll be in prison,” he thought.
The policeman came up to Soapy. “Who did that?” he asked.
“Perhaps I did,” Soapy replied.

But the policeman knew that people who broke the window wouldn’t
stop to talk to the policeman. They ran away. And just then the policeman saw

him. Soapy watched for a minute. Then he walked away. No luck again! He
began to feel cross(愤怒的).

When Drew Mascotti graduated from high school, he got a job—
delivering(送) pizzas. But soon he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted
to do for the rest of his life. So he took a night class at a local tech school to
see if welding(焊接)—which joins two metals together with heat—was a
skill that “was going to stick”.
It turned out that Mascotti wanted to learn everything about it and
decided he’d make welding his career.

But one night class wouldn’t be enough. Mascotti went to Hobart
Welding School in Ohio for real, technical training. Besides welding
courses, Mascotti also took classes in subjects like metallurgy—the study of
metal—and reading blueprints. He became more certain that he would stick to
the job.
For the past 18 years, Mascotti has been a welder. He now works for
the EEW Group. The company has a big project to carry out. It’s in the
process of opening a factory that will produce monopiles for offshore wind
turbines(涡轮机). Wind turbines produce eco-friendly electricity.

A typical day for Mascotti includes a number of tasks and skills. One
minute, he’s driving a forklift. The next, he’s reading blueprints, or
cutting materials. “There are a lot of things to deal with,” he told Time
for Kids.“It’s not just welding.”
Mascotti’s favourite part of being a welder is “making an honest
living”. He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick
to what I really want to do,” he said. “I’m working for a company that is
helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of that
process.”

They do the things because of the meaning that can be brought into their

参考词汇:攀比keep up with the Joneses
Dear Editor,
I’m a middle school student named Wang Ping. Recently, we often
have to buy presents for our classmates’ birthdays, and sometimes, we are
invited to their birthday parties in expensive hotels. This caused us to think
whether students should spend so much money on birthdays.
一
二
三
四
About this there are two different views. Some students think it
provides us with a good chance to communicate with each other,
develop our friendship, and relax ourselves after hard work at school.
However, some other students think it’s a waste of money and time and
can lead us to get into the bad habit of keeping up with the Joneses. It
has a bad effect on our growth and studies.
In my opinion, it’s not easy for our parents to make money. So
there is no need for us to do something like that. We must treasure our
parents’ labour and put our hearts into our studies.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Wang Ping
