A
In Canada and the US, people enjoy entertaining(招待) guests at
home. They often invite friends to a meal, a party, or just for coffee and
conversations.
Here are things people say when they invite someone to their homes.
“Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?”
“Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”

五
六
七
八
To reply to an invitation, you can either say “thank you” and
accept, or say “I’m sorry” and give an excuse, such as “Thanks, I’d
love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry, I’ve
booked tickets for a movie.”.
Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like
invitations but which are not real invitations, for example, “Please come
over for a drink sometime.” and “Why don’t you come over and see us
sometime soon?”.
一

五
六

八
They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not
real invitations because they don’t mention a specific(明确的) time or
date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to
expressions like these, people just say “Sure, that would be great!” or
“OK/Yes, thanks.”.
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen
carefully. Is it a real invitation or just the way to be friendly?

“It’s hard to say this, but I’ll have to leave school in a few weeks,”
said Mr.Thomas, standing at the front of the classroom.
It was early on Monday morning and Mr. Thomas’ students were
shocked(震惊的) at the news. All of them loved Mr.Thomas very much
and they never thought that he might leave. However, Mr.Thomas reached
the age when he was going to retire(退休). After hearing the news, the
class kept gloomy for the next few days until the class monitor gave
them a small scolding(训斥).

On Mr.Thomas’ last day at school, everybody brought a different kind

They covered the blackboard with farewell messages. When Mr.Thomas
showed up, all the students said “Goodbye, dear teacher!” together
and promised Mr.Thomas that they would do their best in schoolwork in the
future.
Mr.Thomas was really surprised. And he was really touched. The class,
in turn, was glad that they did the right thing. After all, it was the
simplest way to show thanks to their favorite teacher.

A(长春外国语学校期末改编)
Have you been invited to a dinner but you did not want to go? Or
maybe you want to go but have no time? Turning down an invitation makes
a lot of people uncomfortable, but sometimes turning down the offer is the
only decision that we can make. About how to refuse an invitation, here is
some advice for you.

Turn down the invitation in the same way. For example, if you were
invited by letter, phone or over the Internet, you should reply to the
invitation by letter, phone or over the Internet. So the inviter will receive
your reply quickly.
Give a simple but clear excuse. Though giving a short excuse seems
impolite, but giving a long excuse also makes things even worse. Give a
simple but clear excuse that shows why you can’t accept the invitation.

Take up some duty on you. If you are invited to a large event, such as a
birthday party or a housewarming, don’t forget to send your gifts and your
good wishes. This shows you take your friendship seriously.
Thank the person who invited you and express(表达) your interest in
taking part in the next event or promise to pay a visit in the future. This will
make the inviter feel better.

The exhibition will be on November 25 in the History Museum. There
will be different kinds of paper-cuttings on show. What’s more, a very
famous paper-cutting artist in our city will be there to teach us how to
make paper-cuttings. You can try it yourself. It will be fun. Chinese
paper-cutting is famous all over the world. I’m sure you’ll have a great
time.
I really hope that you’ll come. I’m looking forward to your reply.
