Here are the posts in a chat room on the Internet. In this chat room, parents are talking about some of the problems they have with their children.
Is it ever OK to lie to a child? My 10-year-old son plays soccer. He’s not very good at it,but he loves it.Yesterday he played very badly but happily. When he finished the game,he asked, “Did I play well?” I said, “Yes!You’re a great soccer player!” Did I do the right thing?
Yes,you did the right thing.Sometimes you have to tell lies that are not harmful. It’s necessary to tell white lies in life.Your purpose was to make him feel good. Now he’s ready to play soccer again.
I don’t think there is ever a good reason to lie to our children.Parents are children’s examples. We should be honest in order to teach honesty to our children. If you keep hiding truth from them, they will not trust you or respect you.Honesty is the first step to build a good relationship between parents and children.
You lied to make your son feel better, but you missed a good chance to teach him a life lesson.People should work hard for what they want.Maybe next time you can say, “No!You didn’t play well today.Great soccer players practice a lot.Let’s go and practice.” The truth will make him strong and a good soccer player.
续表

Should parents make decisions for their children?
When Leon Martin asked for his parents’ advice on how to become a UX designer, they both went silent.“In fact,I had no idea what he was talking about,” said Anne, his mother.“I didn’t know whether he was talking about designing clothes, computer programs or a fancy brand of bike.”
Even when her 18-year-old son explained that it was something about “behind the scenes” online design, his mother was still a bit lost.“I felt like I had totally failed as a parent,” she said.“My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve their potential, but how can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are?”
Research has found that more than 2/3 of parents in England are now facing the problem that, when their children express interest in new education and job choices, they may know nothing about them.More than 75% of parents feel it is almost impossible to offer their children good advice in such a fast-changing job market.
Michelle Rea did a survey of over 2,000 parents of secondary school students in England. She found that many parents were afraid their children would just stop talking about their career plans at home, simply because their mum and dad could hardly follow them.“We all know that parents’ opinions and suggestions play an important role in shaping and influencing their children’s career dreams,” she said.“But we usually depend much on our own experiences. And things have changed so much since most of us were at school.”
Bryony Mathew, writer of the Awesome Career Books, said the world was changing so rapidly that parents should not try to decide on certain careers for their children.

When I was in Grade Five, Mr Brown, our science teacher organized a competition. He asked each of us to make a paper plane of any shape. The person who got his/her paper plane to fly the farthest would win.
I had much experience of making paper planes because I often made them for my younger brother.I made the best plane I could and it flew pretty far.I thought it would be easy for me to win the competition.
To my surprise, my classmate Tony reported that he was ready to test his paper plane with just a regular piece of paper in his hand.Seeing this, some of my classmates started laughing. How could a piece of paper fly? Moments later, Tony crumpled (揉皱) up the piece of paper into a ball and threw it down the hallway. The paper ball did fly very far and Tony beat the class.
Some students got mad and said, “Mr Brown, Tony cheated. That’s not a paper plane at all.”
Hearing this, Mr Brown smiled and said, “Well, I said your paper planes could be in any shape.A paper ball is indeed a shape.”
