In 1879, Edison invented a bulb. It changed the world and made Edison rich and famous. In 2002, a man invented a kind of lighting system that does not use electricity. But the man who invented this system is neither rich nor famous and his invention is changing the lives of millions of people. This system called the Moser Lamp was the idea of Alfredo Moser. And its now bringing light to homes and small businesses in poorer countries.
The Moser Lamp is made of a plastic bottle filled with water and some bleach(漂白剂). It is fixed into a round hole in the roof of a building so that the top part appears in the sun and the bottom part hangs down into the room. The sun shines, and the sunshine falls on the top part of the bottle and makes the water produce light, so the bottom of the bottle shines like an electric bulb. So its disadvantage is that it can only be used when there is sunshine.
This idea came up during a power cut. One day Moser and his friends talked about how to live without electricity. One suggested using a lens(透镜) to focus the sunshine and start a fire. If they didnt have a lens, they could find an old plastic bottle with water. This would act as a lens. This idea came into Mosers head. Almost by accident, he developed the lamp.
Now the Moser Lamp is used in several poor countries. Many people are benefiting from Mosers invention. A great number of people admire what he has done!

Kites, known as “Zhiyuan” in ancient China, have a history spanning over 2,000 years. Originating during the Spring and Autumn Period (770—476 BC), they were initially used for military purposes, such as measuring distances and sending signals. 1. Later, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, paper replaced silk and wood, making kites lighter and more accessible to ordinary people.
By the Tang and Song dynasties, kite-flying became a popular folk activity. 2. For example, the famous Qingming Festival poem “Children Return Early from School to Fly Kites in the East Wind” reflects its cultural significance. Over time, distinct regional styles emerged. In Beijing, the “Sha Yan”(沙燕, Sand Swallow) kite symbolizes joy and harmony, often painted with bold colors like red and gold. 3. Meanwhile, Nantongs “Ban Yao”(板鹞) kites, decorated with hundreds of bamboo whistles, create musical sounds in the wind, earning them the nickname “sky orchestras”.
Traditional kite-making involves four steps: tying bamboo frames, pasting paper or silk, painting symbolic patterns (e.g., dragons for power or butterflies for love), and flying with balanced strings. 4.
Today, cities like Weifang host international kite festivals, blending ancient craftsmanship with modern designs inspired by space exploration or animated characters. 5. From military tools to artistic wonders, Chinese kites continue to bridge history and innovation, carrying both cultural pride and human creativity into the skies.
A.Modern kites even incorporate LED lights for night-time displays.
B.According to records, the philosopher Mozi crafted the first wooden kite.
C.In contrast, Tianjins “Wei-style” kites feature delicate carvings and foldable structures.
