There are specific rules that pet owners must be aware of for the protection and safety of their pets, themselves and wildlife. These rules have been developed over the years from experiences with pets, wildlife and accidents in the park. Yellowstone National Park is a natural area where wildlife is free to wander undisturbed. Park visitors should be able to enjoy native wildlife in their natural environment without the disruption (干扰) of other people’s pets. For this reason, pets are banned in the backcountry and on trails and boardwalks or thermal areas (温泉区). Some additional reasons why pets are prohibited in the backcountry and on trails and boardwalks: * Pets occasionally escape from their owners. Pet animals generally lack the ability to survive in the wild. * There is a strong possibility that your pet could become prey for a bear, coyote, owl or other predators. * There is a possibility of exchange of diseases between pet animals and wildlife. Pets may accompany you in the front country areas of the park. This includes any area within 100 feet/30.5meters of roads, parking areas and campgrounds. Pets must be kept under physical control at all times — caged, crated or on a leash not to exceed six feet in length. There is no kennel facility within Yellowstone National Park. Remember: Pets leave traces other than footprints. The owner is responsible for cleanup and disposal of all pet body wastes. Please be thoughtful of other visitors as well as your pet. 1. What can park visitors do in Yellowstone National Park? A. Get away from pet animals and wildlife. B. Protect themselves from other visitors’ pets and wildlife. C. Keep physical control of any pet disturbing their visit in the park. D. Enjoy native wildlife in their natural environment without disruption. 2. Where are pets permitted to go within Yellowstone National Park according to the passage? A. In the backcountry. B. On trails and boardwalks. C. In some front country areas. D. In the natural habitats of the wildlife. 3. How many reasons are mentioned to explain why pets are banned in some areas? A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5. B Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a young boy named Tim. Tim was known for his extraordinary talent in painting, but he was also known for his lack of confidence. He often hid his paintings, fearing they would not be good enough for others to see. One day, an art competition was announced in the village. Tim’s friends and family encouraged him to participate, but he hesitated, doubting his abilities. His grandfather, a wise old man, noticed Tim’s hesitation and took him to the village stream. “Look at the stream, Tim,” said his grandfather.“Do you see how the water flows smoothly, even when it meets rocks? It never gives up. It finds a way around or over them.” Tim watched the water, understanding the lesson. His grandfather continued, “Your talent is like the water. It’s powerful and beautiful. Don’t let fear block your path. Flow like the water, and let your talent shine.” Inspired by his grandfather’s words, Tim decided to enter the competition. He painted with all his heart, pouring his emotions into the painting. When the day of the competition came, he handed in his painting, still nervous but determined. The results were announced, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim won the first prize. His painting was admired for its depth and emotion. Tim learned a valuable lesson that day: confidence comes from within, and it’s essential to believe in oneself. From then on, Tim never hid his paintings again. He became a well-known artist, always remembering the day his grandfather taught him to flow like water, overcoming every difficulty with determination. 4. Why did Tim hide his paintings? A. He lacked confidence. B. He didn’t want to show off. C. He wanted to improve his paintings. D. He thought his paintings were too well-known. 5. Which of the following can best describe Tim’s grandfather? A. Brave and determined. B. Wise and inspiring. C. Talented and confident. D. Hardworking and smart. 6. What made Tim decide to take part in the competition? A. The prize of the competition. B. The words from his grandfather. C. The water in the village stream. D. The encouragements from his friends and family. 7. What can we learn from Tim’s story? A. No pains, no gains. B. Rome wasn’t built in a day. C. Many hands make light work. D. Where there is a will, there is a way. C When Diane Gayeski, a professor at Ithaca College, receives an essay from one of her students, she runs part of it through a computer program. It is an AI tool to suggest how to improve the work. She shows her students the results and how the tool rewrote their essay. She also asks her students to do the same: run their draft through the program to see where they can make improvements. AI is reshaping education. Both teachers and students are using the new technology. It’s reported that half of college students used AI tools in Fall, 2023. At the same time, while fewer teachers used AI, the percentage grew to 22% in the fall of 2023. It is up from 9% in spring 2023. But while some schools have formed policies on how students can or can’t use AI for schoolwork, many do not have guidelines for teachers. The practice of using AI by teachers also raises moral problems. And parents and students who are already spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on college are wondering if it is worth the time and money. AI would allow teachers to grade papers more effectively and consistently. It can process and grade papers much faster than a human, allowing for quicker feedback(反馈) and avoiding human emotions. But Leidner, a professor at the University of Virginia noted when it came to smaller classes or assignments with less definitive answers, grading should be done by teachers to get to know more about a student’s work. She also said it would not be right to upload the material into the AI. The students need to be aware of this in advance. Some schools are actively working on policies for both teachers and students. Nicolas Frank, a professor of philosophy at University of Lynchburg worries it’s too early. He is also concerned that some school leaders may oversimplify the problems with AI use. Leidner, meanwhile, said universities must also be open to “regularly checking and reconsidering as the technology and uses develop.” 8. What do the numbers in the second paragraph indicate? A. AI is developing fast in colleges. B. AI is overused by college students and teachers. C. AI has been used by more and more college students and teachers. D. AI has caused many problems between college students and teachers. 9 What potential problem has AI used in college brought? A. Economic crisis. B. Moral concerns. C. Emotional problems. D. Interpersonal problems. 10. What does the underlined word “consistently” in the fourth paragraph mean? A. Reliably. B. Economically. C. Creatively. D. Correctly. 11. Which of the following may Leidner agree? A. University leaders should simplify the problems with AI use. B. Universities should work out policies for AI use immediately. C. Universities should encourage students and teachers to use AI. D. Universities should evaluate AI use at regular times as it advances. D Climate change is affecting the speed of the Earth’s rotation (旋转) and could impact how we keep time, a study says. “Global warming is already affecting global timekeeping,” says the study, published in the journal Nature. The Earth’s rotation rate has an effect on how long our days and night s are. In the past, the Earth’s rotation was slightly quicker. We added leap seconds from time to time to ensure our clocks reflect the Earth’s rotation as accurately as possible. Since the 1970s, about 27 leap seconds have been added to the global clock. In recent years, the Earth’s rotation has been getting slower. Thus, timekeepers are planning on taking away a second for the first time in 2026.This is known as a “negative leap second.” However, the study finds that ice melting caused by climate change has partly balanced out that speeding-up. Ice sheets are now losing mass five times faster than they were 30 years ago. It means that the negative leap second change will not be needed until 2029. “It’s kind of impressive, even to me, we’ve done something that even changes how fast the Earth rotates,” Duncan Agnew, the author of the study, told NBC News. The negative leap second has never been used before. According to the study, its use will pose a major challenge to making sure that all parts of the global timing facilities show the same time,” Mr Agnew said. “Many computer programs for leap seconds assume they are all positive. If the negative leap second should be put into use, all the programs would have to be rewritten,” he added. There have been some doubts about the study, however. Dr. Matsakis, a former chief scientist for time services, said that it’s still too early for us to tell if a negative leap second would be needed soon. Human activities like burning fossil fuels are causing world temperatures to rise. And that temperature rise is having a huge effect on the environment, including the rapid melting of ice sheets. 12. What’s the type of this passage? A. A news report. B. A narrative essay. C. A practical writing. D. An argumentative writing. 13. How did timekeepers ensure our clocks reflect the Earth’s rotation in the past? A. By using new clocks. B. By adding leap seconds. C. By taking away a second. D. By creating smarter computer networks. 14. Why has the negative leap second change been put off? A. Because its use will destroy the computer programs. B. Because human activities have affected the timekeeping. C. Because the global timing facilities cannot show the same time. D. Because the speeding-up of the Earth’s rotation has been balanced. 15. What’s the passage mainly talking about? A. Climate change has affected the timekeeping. B. The negative leap second has been put into use. C. Global warming has caused a series of problems. D. Timekeeping has affected the computer programs. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September in the US. 9. What potential problem has AI used in college brought? A. Economic crisis. B. Moral concerns. C. Emotional problems. D. Interpersonal problems. 10. What does the underlined word “consistently” in the fourth paragraph mean? A. Reliably. B. Economically. C. Creatively. D. Correctly. 11. Which of the following may Leidner agree? A. University leaders should simplify the problems with AI use. B. Universities should work out policies for AI use immediately. C. Universities should encourage students and teachers to use AI. D Universities should evaluate AI use at regular times as it advances. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. (它可以比人类更快地处理和评分论文,允许更快的反馈,避免人类的情绪)”可知,人工智能能够更有效,更可靠地评定学生的成绩。选项A. reliably意为“可靠地”与画线词的意思相近。故选A。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“ Leidner, meanwhile, said universities must also be open to ‘regularly checking and reconsidering as the technology and uses develop.’ (与此同时,Leidner表示,随着技术和用途的发展,大学也必须“定期检查和重新考虑”。)”可推知,Leidner认为随着人工智能的发展,大学应该定期评估人工智能的使用情况。故选D。 D Climate change is affecting the speed of the Earth’s rotation (旋转) and could impact how we keep time, a study says. Thus, timekeepers are planning on taking away a second for the first time in 2026.This is known as a “negative leap second.” However the study finds that ice melting caused by climate change has partly balanced out that speeding-up. 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. We know that carbon dioxide is the major greenhouse gas that causes global warming. By living a low-carbon life, we can cut carbon dioxide emissions, which may contribute to stopping the temperature from rising. There are many ways of leading an environmentally friendly life. For instance, we can turn off electrical appliances like lights, the television and the computer when we aren’t using them. Cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy, so we could walk or ride a bicycle for short trips. If we need to travel a long distance we can take public transportation. It’s also wise to use reusable cloth bags and not disposable plastic bags when we shop. I believe that as long as each of us makes a small change to cut carbon emissions, we can make a big difference and develop a harmonious relationship with the environment. 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生写一篇短文投稿,因为学校英语报举办了主题为“低碳生活,从我做起”的征文活动。 【详解】1.词汇积累 减少:cut→reduce 主要的:major→crucial/primary 导致:contribute to→lead to/result in 明智的:wise→intelligent/sensible 2.句式拓展 同义句转换 原句:It’s also wise to use reusable cloth bags and not disposable plastic bags when we shop. 拓展句:It’s also wise that we use reusable cloth bags instead of disposable plastic bags when shopping. 【点睛】【高分句型1】By living a low-carbon life, we can cut carbon dioxide emissions, which may contribute to stopping the temperature from rising.
