Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. When the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.
Now, poetry competitions have been revived. This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.
The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to school-wide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion, descended upon Washington, D.C., last week for the ultimate showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another, 12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to “perform” a poem. The overall champion, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.
It’s not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It’s the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. “Each time we hear somebody recite a poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” says National Public Radio broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something new for the listener.
Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, but memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn public-speaking skills that can help them for life.
4. From the first paragraph, we can know ________.
A. the Greeks were the first to write poems
B. the Olympics used to start with poem reciting
C. poems were spread orally in the past
D. athletes were asked to recite poems before competing
5. How many rounds of competitions did the champions take before they went to Washington, D.C.?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
6. According to the passage, hearing a poem recited by different people can ________.
A. bring a new life to listeners B. help listeners find their interest
C. make listeners learn the words D. offer something new to listeners
7. One benefit the participants get from poem recitation competitions is that they can ________.
A. become skilled in speaking in public B. write good poems themselves
C. change their attitudes towards life D. make friends with many great poets

Your next car could have two seats, three wheels — two in front and one in the back and a top speed of more than 100 miles per hour. Elio Motors plans to make such a tiny car named the Elio. Its two seats sit front and back instead of side by side. The driver is positioned in the center with the passenger directly behind.
The starting price for the car is just $6,800. It has only one door, on the left side, which cuts a few hundred dollars off the manufacturing costs. Having three wheels also makes it cheaper. It has air conditioning, power windows and door locks and an AM/FM radio. More features can be ordered through Elio's long list of suppliers. Elio will also sell the cars directly through its own stores and not through franchised dealers (特约经销商).
Paul Elio dreamed as a kid that he would one day own a car company called Elio Motors. In 2008, tired of high gas prices, he started working on a car that burns gas in a more effective way. Equally important to him was creating U.S. manufacturing jobs and making the car inexpensive enough to attract buyers who might otherwise be stuck in their old, unreliable cars. “Whatever matters to you, this can move the needle on it,” he said.
Already, more than 27,000 people have reserved (预订) one. Paul hopes to make 250,000 cars a year by 2016. So far, reservation holders are those who will use the Elio as a second or third car for work. Finally, though, he believes the car will interest high school and college students as well as used-car drivers who want something newer and more reliable.
8. Which of the following shows the design of the Elio?
(○ = wheel, □ = seat)
A. B. C. D.
9. Paragraph 2 shows that the Elio ________.
A. will be available in most stores B. is sold at affordable prices
C. has a fixed temperature D. does no harm to the environment
10. The underlined words “move the needle” in Paragraph 3 probably mean “________”.
A. take a chance B. stand in the way C. break into pieces D. make a difference
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The history of Elio Motors B. Cool car or stupid vehicle?
C. Paul Elio: a kid with big dreams D. What car to choose: new or used?
D
French poet Victor Hugo (1802-1885) once said, “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelt out is a spark.”
Today when we read books, road signs and posters, it’s probably hard to imagine that only half a century ago, about 40 percent of the world’s adults were still illiterate, according to data from UNESCO. This means that two out of every five adults could neither read nor write in the 1960s. In other words, the “sparks” that now light up our world failed to do the same for theirs.
In response to this situation, UNESCO decided to name Sept. 8 as International Literacy (读写能力) Day, starting from 1967. Every year, the day is celebrated to stress the importance of literacy and the progress that has been made, which itself is huge—in 2019, the global adult literacy rate rose to 86 percent, while the youth literacy rate was as high as 91 percent, according to UNESCO.
This raises a question: If the mission to promote literacy has basically been accomplished, why do we still celebrate this day?
The truth is that the definition of “literacy” keeps changing. For example, the theme for 2007 and 2008 International Literacy Day was “Literacy and health”, which targeted people’s ignorance of diseases like HIV and malaria (疟疾). For 2017, the emphasis was placed on “Literacy in a digital world”, because not knowing anything about the Internet in today’s world is just like lacking basic reading abilities in the 1960s—it’s the “new illiteracy”.
The focus for this year’s International Literacy Day is “Literacy and skills development”. But the skills in question are not job-specific skills, such as those required to be an electrician or a chef. Instead, the focus will be on “transferable skills”—communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity, to name a few. These are the things that allow us to do our job well—any job.
12. Why did UNESCO set up International Literacy Day originally?
A. To encourage the young people to read more.
B. To help people read books, road signs and posters.
C. To increase literacy rate from 40 percent to 86 percent.
D. To improve people’s literacy by stressing its importance.
13. How does the author show the progress in literacy?
A. By using figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By comparing the details.
14. What will be focused on for this year’s International Literacy Day?
A. Job-specific skills. B. Skills of a chef.
C. Thinking critically. D. Making electricians.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Achievements in literacy.
B. International Literacy Day.
C. The development of UNESCO.
D. The reasons to promote literacy.

How to Make Quick Decisions for Your Life
We make decisions every day. Some can be very important while others are not serious in the long run. ____16____ Indecision often weighs us down, but there are some useful tips for making quick decisions more easily.
____17____ Sometimes the key to making a quick decision comes down to planning ahead of time for just such an occasion. We all know we’re going to come to an important decision-making point sooner or later, so having a plan already in hand can put our mind at ease when that time comes.
Overcome fear. Often, one thing that keeps us from making decisions is fear. It may seem difficult to overcome the fear of making the wrong choice. ____18____ The vast majority of wrong decisions can be corrected, while delaying decisions can often lead to more problems.
Write down all the advantages and disadvantages of your decision. Even if you don’t have all the information, writing down all the pros and cons (利弊) is a good starting point for figuring out what to do. In cases where there simply isn’t enough time to write things down, make a mental list in your mind. Thinking of the pros and cons can help you organize your thoughts.____19____
Determine criteria. Remember that every decision you make should come with a certain list of criteria. ____20____ But once you know the requirements you’re looking for, making a decision will become easier. Look for the choice that satisfies the list you’ve made, and once that choice is found, you should move ahead with it.
A. Have a plan.
B. The list may be short or quite long.
C. Communicate your decision with others.
D. And this can always lead to a clear answer.
E. So cut out any options that you know you will not choose.
F. But many experts agree that we shouldn’t be afraid to make the wrong decision.
G. When it comes to making decisions, choosing the right one can at times be stressful.

D
French poet Victor Hugo (1802-1885) once said, “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelt out is a spark.”
Today, when we read books, road signs and posters, it’s probably hard to imagine that only half a century ago, about 40 percent of the world’s adults were still illiterate, according to data from UNESCO.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Every year, the day is celebrated to highlight the importance of literacy and the progress that has been made, which itself is huge — in 2016, the global adult literacy rate rose to 86 percent, while the youth literacy rate was as high as 91 percent, according to UNESCO.”(每年,人们都会庆祝扫盲日,以此来强调扫盲的重要性,以及扫盲取得的巨大进步。根据联合国教科文组织的数据,2016年,全球成人识字率上升到86%,而青少年识字率高达91%。)可知作者通过使用数字向我们展示人们读写能力的进步。故选A项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“Instead, the focus will be on ‘transferable skills’— communication, critical thinking, multitasking, teamwork, and creativity, to name a few.”(相反,重点将放在“可转移的技能”上——比如沟通、批判性思维、多任务处理、团队合作和创造力等)可知,批判性思考将是今年国际扫盲日的重点关注方面。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“UNESCO decided to name Sept. 8 as International Literacy (读写能力) Day, starting from 1967. Every year, the day is celebrated to stress the importance of literacy and the progress that has been made”(联合国教科文组织决定自1967年起将9月8日定为国际扫盲日。

【19题详解】
根据空前“Thinking of the pros and cons can help you organize your thoughts.(思考利弊能帮助你理清你的思维。)”
根据空前“Remember that every decision you make should come with a certain list of criteria.(记住,你做出的每个决定都应该有一个特定的标准列表。)”可知,B项“这个列表可能很短,也可能很长。”是前文的顺义承接,你做出的每个决定都应该有一个特定的标准列表,这个列表可能很短,也可能很长,B项对空前进一步解释说明,故选B项。
