Families are taking down their decorations and throwing out their trees when Christmas has come to an end. However, one man in Texas is re using the trees for a good cause. Canes (拐杖) for Veterans (退伍军人) Central Texas, which was set up by Jamie Willis, makes free canes out of waste wood for veterans in need. Willis started the organization when he found himself in need of a strong cane, he told CBS News.
Jamie Willis had served in the army for eight years, but was left disabled. He would use a cane to get around, but didn’t like the one he received from Veterans Affairs. He decided to ask for a suitable replacement (替代品) from the organization Free Canes for Veterans. Oscar Morris, who ran the organization, apologized to Willis because they were all handed out.
He then considered making one for himself. Luckily, with the help of Morris, Willis made his first cane. Morris encouraged him to make another cane for someone else in need, which gave Willis an idea, He started the Canes for Veterans Central Texas.
During its first year, Willis simply collected thrown-away trees and wood. Now, after getting some attention, Willis has received many donated Christmas trees from neighbors and natives. Since 2016, Willis and his team have made 222 canes for veterans in need. He’s even started to make the canes with slogans (标语) and designs chosen by the veterans, making each one meaningful to those veterans.
“It’s a great feeling,” he told CBS News. “It takes their eyes off their so called disability and it takes their eye to the cane. Because when people look at a person with just a metal cane, everyone just wonders what happens,” Willis added. “But now, when they’re walking around with canes that we make, they’re looking at the cane, a piece of artwork.”
4. Why did Jamie Willis finally decide to make himself a cane?
A. He liked the cane with a slogan. B. The cane he received was out of date.
C. He failed to apply for a satisfying cane. D. The canes in stores were too expensive.
5. What made Willis start his organization?
A. His own hobby. B. Recycling enough Christmas trees.
C. Public support. D. Morris’ encouragement.
6. What is the local people’s attitude to Willis’ behavior?
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Willis’ canes are designed to attract public attention.
B. Willis’ canes help reduce mental stress of the disabled.
C. People like Willis’ canes more than the metal canes.
D. People respect the disabled more with Willis’ canes.

If you were to lift up the keys of your keyboard, and take a look below, you’d probably be met with a terrible scene. “We clean our homes but most of us never think to clean our keyboards,” Rebecca Park, an advanced practice nurse, says.
“Our keyboards can actually hold high levels of bacteria (细菌),” Park says. “The most common bacteria that are found on our keyboards tend to live on our skin, mouth, and nose. These are then carried to our keyboards, usually by our hands.”
And according to one study, this is more likely when many people use the same keyboard, and each brings their own bacteria to the table. That said, touching bacteria-covered surfaces all day long, and then touching your face, can impact your skin. “Dirty electronic devices are a common cause of more acne (粉刺) breakouts,” Dr Yoram Harth explains.
In another study, researchers collected samples (样本) from 300 keyboards and found that all of them had bacteria. “The authors concluded that the presence of infective (感染性的) bacteria on these objects indicates that they might be a cause for the spread of skin infections,” Harth says. “Similar overloads of bacteria were also found on smartphone touch screens and computer mice and headphones.”
It’s not something you necessarily have to think too much about, but it never hurts to be aware of surfaces with bacteria, and take a few extra prevention steps. “A good way to prevent the spread of infection from your keyboards is to wash your hands before and after using the computer,” Park says. “Soapy water is effective enough to kill most bacteria.”
Do this, and you won’t carry as much bacteria to your keyboard, and then back to your face, and so is the opposite. It can also ensure you won’t be clogging your keys with bits from food, especially if you get right back to typing after eating lunch.
8. What do the two studies find?
A. Most people never clean their keyboards.
B. Most of the bacteria on the keyboards are harmless.
C. Most acne breakouts are related to the keyboard use.
D. Most electronic devices have bacteria on their surfaces.
9. Which way is suggested in the text to avoid the spread of bacteria?
A. Clean the keyboard with soapy water.
B. Wash hands after using the computer.
C. Wear gloves when using the computer.
D. Avoid eating before using the computer.
10. What does the underlined word “clogging” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Blocking. B. Improving. C. Destroying. D. Replacing.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Useful Tips on Choosing a Proper Keyboard
B. Practical Ways to Protect Yourself from Bacteria
C. What You Should Keep in Mind About Infection
D. What Happens When You Don’t Clean Your Keyboard

It’s easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job market; after all, you’ve likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of human hands.
But there’s no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU sociology professor Eric Dahlin. Dahlin’s research found that robots aren’t replacing (取代) humans at the rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.
To understand the relationship between job loss and robots, Dahlin surveyed nearly 2, 000 people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the percentage of employees whose employers (雇主) have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.
The study found that only 14% of workers say they’ve seen their job replaced by a robot. But those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs from humans by about three times.
“Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated,” says Dahlin. Those who haven’t lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about three times. Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the situation of robots taking over jobs.
The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren’t replacing workers. Rather, workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way. “An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store,” says Dahlin. “This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places.”
12. How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research?
A. By asking people questions. B. By comparing early studies.
C. By interviewing employers. D. By studying new businesses.
13. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Bad effects of technology. B. A fall in laid-off workers.
C. Benefits of using robots. D. The finding of the study.
14. What might deepen people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text?
A. Low pay. B. News reports.
C. Physical health. D. Fewer workplaces,
15. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with?
A. Robots can work as human partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.

C Most acne breakouts are related to the keyboard use.
D. Most electronic devices have bacteria on their surfaces.
9. Which way is suggested in the text to avoid the spread of bacteria?
A. Clean the keyboard with soapy water.
B Wash hands after using the computer.
C. Wear gloves when using the computer.
D. Avoid eating before using the computer.
10. What does the underlined word “clogging” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Blocking. B. Improving. C. Destroying. D. Replacing.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Useful Tips on Choosing a Proper Keyboard
B. Practical Ways to Protect Yourself from Bacteria
C. What You Should Keep in Mind About Infection
D. What Happens When You Don’t Clean Your Keyboard
D 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据第三段“And according to one study, this is more likely when many people use the same keyboard, and each brings their own bacteria to the table. That said, touching bacteria-covered surfaces all day long, and then touching your face, can impact your skin. “Dirty electronic devices are a common cause of more acne (粉刺) breakouts,” Dr Yoram Harth explains. (根据一项研究,当许多人使用同一个键盘时,这种情况更有可能发生,每个人都把自己的细菌带到桌子上。)”和第四段“In another study, researchers collected samples (样本) from 300 keyboards and found that all of them had bacteria. “The authors concluded that the presence of infective (感染性的) bacteria on these objects indicates that they might be a cause for the spread of skin infections,” Harth says. (在另一项研究中,研究人员从300个键盘上收集样本,发现它们都有细菌。哈思说:“作者得出的结论是,这些物品上感染细菌的存在表明它们可能是皮肤感染传播的原因。”)”可知两项研究都表明大多数电子设备的表面都有细菌。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““A good way to prevent the spread of infection from your keyboards is to wash your hands before and after using the computer,” Park says. “Soapy water is effective enough to kill most bacteria.” (帕克说:“防止键盘感染传播的一个好方法是在使用电脑前后洗手。”“肥皂水足以杀死大多数细菌。”)”可知,防止键盘感染传播的方法是使用电脑前后都要洗手。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段““A good way to prevent the spread of infection from your keyboards is to wash your hands before and after using the computer,” Park says. “Soapy water is effective enough to kill most bacteria.” (帕克说:“防止键盘感染传播的一个好方法是在使用电脑前后洗手。”“肥皂水足以杀死大多数细菌。”)”可知,使用电脑前洗手,可以杀灭大多数细菌,根据最后一段“Do this, and you won’t carry as much bacteria to your keyboard, and then back to your face, and so is the opposite. It can also ensure you won’t be clogging your keys with bits from food, especially if you get right back to typing after eating lunch. (这样做,你就不会把那么多细菌带到你的键盘上,然后回到你的脸上,反之亦然。它还可以确保你不会被食物残渣 你的键盘,尤其是当你吃完午饭后马上回去打字的时候。)”中的“your keys with bits from food”推断,空处应该指“食物残渣堵塞键盘”,所以clogging意为“堵塞”和blocking同义。故选A。
通读全文,尤其第一段“If you were to lift up the keys of your keyboard, and take a look below, you’d probably be met with a terrible scene. “We clean our homes but most of us never think to clean our keyboards,” Rebecca Park, an advanced practice nurse, says. (如果你举起你的键盘键,看看下面,你可能会遇到一个可怕的场景。高级实习护士丽贝卡•帕克(Rebecca Park)表示:“我们会打扫房间,但大多数人从未想过要清洁键盘。”) ”可知文章主要讲述我们使用的键盘可能会容纳很多细菌,如果长时间不清理,细菌会感染我们的皮肤,并给出预防细菌传播的一些建议。D选项“不清理键盘会发生什么”能总结文章的主题,适合作标题。故选D。

A By asking people questions. B. By comparing early studies.
C. By interviewing employers. D. By studying new businesses.
13. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Bad effects of technology. B. A fall in laid-off workers.
C. Benefits of using robots. D. The finding of the study.
14 What might deepen people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text?
A. Low pay. B. News reports.
C. Physical health. D. Fewer workplaces,
15. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with?
A. Robots can work as human partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.
A 13. D 14. B 15. A
