A new life in London
Those early years were wonderful. Will and I didn’t have much money, of course, and we had to work very hard. A new actor only got six shillings(先令,一种货币单位) a week, and there wasn’t work every week. I decided not to be an actor.
“Why not?” said Will. “It’s a great life.”
We were working that month at the theatre. Will was acting four small parts in two different plays. He played a soldier and a murderer in one play, and in the other play he was a thief, and also an Italian lord. And he loved it.
“I’m not clever like you,” I said. “I can’t remember all those words. I forget who I am! I say the soldier’s words, when I’m an Italian lord. I come on stage too late, or too soon...”
Will laughed. “What are you going to do, then?”
“Costumes(服装),” I said. “And properties. I had a talk with John, and he said they need a new man to help with all the clothes and the other things.”
“Yes,” Will said slowly. “You’ll be good at that. Now, I’ve got a fight on stage tomorrow, and I have to die with lots of blood. How are you going to get me some blood?”
“I’ve already got it!” I smiled kindly at him. “Sheep’s blood. I got it down at Smithfield market this morning. I’m keeping it warm or you!”
Will was good at acting. Not the best, but good. An actor had to do everything. He had to learn his words for six different plays at the same time. He had to dance, and sing, and play music. He had to jump, and fall, and fight. And the fights had to look real.
I had a lot to learn, too. I learnt how to make shoes out of brown paper. How to clean the actors’ hats with a bit of bread. Then they looked like new again. I ran all over London to buy the best hair for the wigs(假发).
25. Why did the author decide not to be an actor?
A.There was so much work every week that a new actor got too tired every day.
B.He thought actors are not liked by others.
C.He found it difficult to remember lines and felt he was not clever enough for acting.
26. How did the author get some blood for Will?
A.He bought some pig’s blood at Queenfield market in the morning.
B.He got some sheep’s blood at Smithfield market in the morning.
C.He used red paint to make blood.
27. Which of the following is TURE?
A.Will was the best actor at that time and he loved it.
B.Will always played the same parts in plays.
C .The author had a lot to learn in preparing costumes and properties.
28. What is the meaning of the underlined word “properties” in the passage?
A.道具 B.房地产 C.特性
C篇
Most of us think elephants and dogs are very smart animals in the world. Now there is one more animal that can be added to the list—sheep. Scientists say that sheep can be trained to recognize (识别) human faces.
Before testing, scientists guide the sheep to look at pictures of the four famous people. The sheep went into a farm with two computer screens. Each screen showed a human face. One screen showed a famous person and the other showed a random (随机的) person. The sheep could walk towards the screen with the famous face.
After discovering sheep’s ability to recognize famous people, scientists wanted to see whether they could correctly recognize the same people from different ways. The sheep are still able to recognize them, though they were a bit slower to recognize the pictures than before.
Finally, the researchers wondered if the sheep could recognize their trainers from photos. Their trainers were shown on screens along with many strange faces. Then, the sheep found them successfully. The results show the face-recognition abilities of sheep are similar to those of monkeys, elephants and humans.
Face recognition is a difficult process for most animals. But sheep have big brains. When they see other sheep, they use this process to recognize one another.
29.What did the sheep do before the test on a farm?
A.They lived with the famous people on the farm.
B.They looked at the pictures of four famous people.
C.They were trained to look at some random people’s faces on computer.
30.Which question is answered?
A.Who are the four famous people in the research?
B.How long does the sheep look at the famous people’s faces?
C.Whether could the sheep correctly recognize the same people from other ways?
31.How many tests on the sheep are mentioned in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.
32.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The sheep failed to recognize their trainers in photos.
B.Sheep are born with the ability to recognize each other.
C.Dogs have the same ability to recognize humans’ faces as elephants.
D篇
There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure (血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep, they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert (专家) in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit (信用) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep to ‘pay back’ the hours on your ‘sleep credit card’.”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish (愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.”
33. According to the writer, the easiest and cheapest way to improve health is to _____.
A. eat healthy food every day B. take exercise as much as possible
C. sleep eight hours or more every night
34. According to Dr. James Maas, what is sleep like?
A. An hour. B. A report. C. A credit card.
35. What do the words of the famous person mean in Paragragh 5?
A. Sleeping during the night is foolish. B. Sleeping during the night is helpful.
C. People have no courage.
36. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Value of Sleep B. The Value of Study C. The Ways of Eating Less

阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near a copper smelter (炼铜厂). It made chemicals come out and made a beautiful forest become a wasteland. One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area. Paul knocked him down angrily. From then on, something happened inside him.
Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was “No”.
Paul then went to college to study the science of plants. Unfortunately, his teachers said since there weren’t any birds or squirrels (松鼠) to spread the seeds, it would be a waste of his life to try to do it. He was told everyone knew that even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn’t get his idea accepted.
Paul later got married and had some kids. But his dream would not die. And then one night he did what he could with what he had. To bring trees back to the wasteland, he went secretly into the wasteland and started planting under the cover of darkness. And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass.
Slowly rabbits appeared. Later, as there was legal(法律的) pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing. Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, and Paul has received almost every environmental award Utah has. It took him until his hair turned white to plant trees and grass, but he managed to keep that impossible vow (誓言) he made to himself as a child.

Growing Pains and Gains
How time flies! My junior school life is coming to an end. Looking back, I had not only pains but also gains.
I faced the biggest problem when I entered Grade Nine. I always hated running, but I had no choice because of the sports exam. Although I practised hard every day, I couldn’t run fast enough to pass the exam. I just wanted to give up. At that moment, the story about Spud Webb encouraged me. Through hard work, Spud Webb became the shortest player in the NBA. His story gave me courage to solve all kind of problems.
Now, I’m not afraid of 800-meter running any more. I have learned that nothing is impossible if we don’t give up easily.
