Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil(袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife biologist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Because a rare disease is reducing the number of devils, Oddity and 14 others were raised on a preserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released into the wild.
Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species. The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife preserves.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading.
Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. Scientists are now figuring out their next move. According to Wise, the focus will soon shift to moving some of the healthy devils back to mainland Tasmania.
Wise says he is “extremely happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD. It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve threatened species.”
4. Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity?
A. To prevent DFTD killing them out. B. To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C. To control the DFTD spread in zoos. D. To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
5. What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
A. Its wildlife diversity. B. Its geographic location.
C. Its natural resources. D. Its improved ecosystem.
6. How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A. Their safety was uncertain. B. Their number was going up.
C. They hardly enjoyed freedom. D. They recovered from DFTD.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A program studying Tasmanian devils. B. A disease threatening Tasmanian devils.
C. A measure to save Tasmanian devils. D. A habitat of wild Tasmanian devils.
C
Currently, one of the biggest problems in Laos is underfunded education-the government lacks money to build and maintain schools and pay teachers, which, of course, holds back teaching and learning. Despite this, Laos still produces quite a few graduates with valuable skills such as knowing Chinese, English, Korean, or Japanese. The problem is not the students.
Nor does the problem stem from a lack of financial means: Laos has enormous wealth. The problem is that this wealth is not financing a proper system of education. Local corruption(腐败)means that the wealthy do not pay taxes. Laos needs a transparent tax system that functions normally, as in more developed countries such as Malaysia. Laos can learn several lessons from Malaysia’s successful taxation strategies.
Last year, Malaysian students scored exceptionally well on standardized tests in a wide variety of subjects. However, Lao students scored very poorly, especially in math. The 2022 standardized test scores for Laos were the lowest in Asia. Such a terrible result constitutes an emergency. Young people are not adequately educated in Laos, and the main cause is a catastrophic lack of funding due to tax avoidance.
Therefore, I propose that a total change be made in the tax system of Laos. This step is crucial because Laos is a member of ASEANN, and the basic support for education needs to be comparable among the member nations. Laos has always lagged behind other ASEAN member states on this issue of support for education as a percentage of GDP. Experts estimate that Laos will only spend 3.2% of its GDP on education in 2023.
To conclude, I must emphasize that Lao education is in crisis. For many years, their education system has been underfunded as a percentage of GDP compared with other ASEAN countries, and standardized test scores are upsetting. If Lao education can become adequately funded, Lao students will step up and compete with their peers across Asia.
8. What is the best title of this passage?
A Education in Laos:Challenges and Opportunities.
B. Students in Laos:Valuable skills and Poor scores.
C. ASEAN Membership in Laos: Emergency and Hope.
D. Problems in Laos: Misbehaving students and Low-tax system.
9. According to paragraph 3, what caused Lao students’ poor performance?
A. Students’ low intelligence. B. The improper tax system.
C. Unqualified math teachers. D. Unfair academic competitions.
10. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. In 2023, only 3. 2% of the Laos’ GDP will be used on education.
B. Rich people in Laos pay much more taxes than the poor people.
C. The Lao government doesn’t pay enough attention to education.
D. ASEAN member states support Laos to promote its education.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards education in Laos?
A. Indifferent B. Concerned C. Sympathetic D. Neutral
D
You probably get your eyes tested to protect your sight, maybe have a yearly hearing test to check your ears—but, protecting your nose... eh? Recent research has discovered more than 600 genes in the human body associated with the sense of smell and that it’s actually important to the human body.
Smell can help keep us alive by warning us of dangers such as food that might make us sick or the threat of fire, and it does this within only 100-150 milliseconds of breathing. “Smell also helps create the flavour of food and plays a role in controlling the variety of our diet and the nutrients we consume,” says Jeanne Hort, a professor at News Zealand’s Massey University.
In fact, each of us has a unique sense of smell and the strength of our unique smell is related to the genes you inherit (遗传) from your parents which determine which smell receptors (感受器) are expressed in the nose. Other factors further determine how sensitive your sense of smell is. Women generally have a stronger sense of smell than men, while damage from air pollution means people who live in highly polluted cities have a less sensitive sense of smell than those in rural areas. “We also know the sense of smell declines with age,” says Professor Hort. “And if you’ve damaged your nose through head injury, illness or breathing in something that causes pain and discomfort, your sense of smell can also be negatively affected.”
Protecting your nose from such damage is therefore the first step in activating your sense of smell. Avoid breathing in strong scents like chemicals. Then, keep your nose busy. For example, sniff (唉) vegetables and fruit as part of determining ripeness before you buy them and sniff more different smells exposed to your nose. “The sense of smell is a bit like a muscle, you can train it to become stronger by exercising it,” says sensory expert Eugeni Roura.
12. Why does the author mention eye and ear protection in paragraph 1?
A To compare different human senses. B. To call attention to the sense of smell.
C. To clarify the concept of good health. D. To show the importance of medical exams.
13. What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A. The advice on healthy eating. B. The basic functions of the nose.
C. The important role of smell in life. D. The ways to avoid hidden dangers.
14. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A. There is sex difference in terms of smell. B. The sense of smell doesn’t change with age.
C. Smell receptors decide the strength of smell. D. Air pollution is very likely to cause loss of smell.
15. What does the quote from Eugeni Roura imply?
A. It is essential to protect your nose from damage.
B. Different parts of your body sometimes work the same.
C. Sniffing different smells helps to build up your strength.
D. The more you use the sense of smell, the more you sharpen it.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With the weather getting colder and the days becoming shorter, some people are noticing they have less energy and aren’t feeling as positive as they usually do. 16 This type of depression is known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Researchers aren’t yet clear on what causes SAD, but it's likely to be complex. Some research suggests it could be due to a malfunctioning hypothalamus (下丘脑功能不全) or producing too much melatonin (a hormone which controls our sleep-wake cycle). Some researchers theorize it could also be due to having a disrupted circadian rhythm(昼夜节奏混乱).___17 _For example, some research has indicated that women may be more likely to experience SAD — though, due to a lack of specific research, it’s uncertain whether these gender differences really exist and if so, why.
Some people notice that their symptoms start to improve when the seasons begin to change and spring approaches.___18___For people with SAD, the main recommended treatments include psychological treatments or taking medicine. Research shows that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for SAD.
19 Given it's still an emerging therapy, research on it remains inconsistent with other treatments.
Aside from seeking professional help, there are a couple of other things that people can do to help them cope with SAD during their day. 20 The researchers of the study had participants either go for a daily one-hour outdoor walk or use a low-dose artificial light box for 30 minutes per day for a period of one week. The participants who went for a daily walk showed significant improvements in all depressive symptoms, compared to those exposed to artificial light.
A. Colder weather and less daylight may have you feeling a bit more down lately.
B. Research also shows that lifestyle factors can play an important role in both causing and managing depression.
C. According to one study, getting more natural light during the day may help improve symptoms.
D. Of course, there may be other factors at play too.
E. But this doesn’t mean that there aren't many things people can do during the winter months to help them cope with their symptoms.
F. While these feelings may be temporary for some, around one in three people consistently struggle through the autumn and winter months.
G. Light therapy is also currently being investigated as a treatment for SAD.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Sophie left the grocery, it suddenly started raining — a heavy downpour, in fact. She had neither her jacket nor her umbrella.
Sophie held her paper bag over her head and made a rush. The rain hit her face as she ran up the street. As she stood waiting for the lights to change, Sophie glanced down to see a child’s toy lying on the sidewalk. She looked around, wondering who might have dropped it, but the street was deserted. What should she do? She couldn’t just leave it there. Sophie bent and picked up the toy — a grey elephant with a dirty label, and very wet. As the light went green, she had to make a quick decision. She held the elephant tightly and hurried on her way to her office.
“Why did you bring it with you?” Gemma asked while Sophie poured a coffee. “When they realise they’ve lost it, they’ll probably return to the place. You should’ve displayed it where you found it. Somewhere noticeable.”
That made sense. “It was getting completely wet,” Sophie protested, “It might have been destroyed.”
“It might as well be, if you can’t reunite it with its owner,” Gemma replied. “Some toddler (学步儿童) is going to have trouble getting to sleep tonight without their elephant.”
Oh, dear! Sophie had tried to do a good thing, but acting on impulse (冲动) might not have been the best choice. She decided to go back at lunch — find somewhere to set it up high. For the rest of the morning she placed the elephant on the radiator (暖气片) by her desk. At least it would be a bit drier by the time she took it back. But at lunch time, another heavy shower arrived. She picked up the toy elephant and gave its large ears a rub.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“What am I going to do with you?” she asked, staring at the toy.

46. 【答案】Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my support for the protection of traditional villages, which, I think, are a crucial part of our cultural heritage. Not only do these villages provide a glimpse into our ancestors’ life but they contribute to boosting the regional economy.
To better protect these villages, I propose that special regulations be established, like limiting new construction and preserving the existing architecture. It is equally significant to encourage local villagers to participate in the preservation efforts by promoting traditional handicrafts and cultural activities.
I would appreciate it if my advice could be taken into serious consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47.【答案】One possible version:
“What am I going to do with you?” she asked, staring at the toy. Suddenly, she came up with a plan. She decided to take a photo of the toy and post it on social media, hoping that someone would recognize it and help connect her with the owner. Sophie snapped a picture of the toy elephant, wrote a caption explaining the situation, and shared it on various local community groups and lost-and-found pages. Although Sophie received numerous messages and calls from different people, none of them turned out to be the right match. However, she remained hopeful and continued her search. Finally, one afternoon, Sophie received a call from a man.
The man on the phone, who said his name was Arthur, sounded excited. He explained that the toy was his child’s cherished one and his description exactly matched that day’s situation. Sophie arranged a meeting with the family, and upon seeing the joyous reunion between the child and her toy, she knew that her impulsive decision had ultimately led to a happy ending. From that day forward, Sophie learned the importance of thinking through her actions before acting on impulse. She also realized the power of community and social media in helping to solve problems and bring people together.
