If we want to learn English well, we must improve our English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. I don’t think improving our reading skills is very difficult. If you want to get the most from the study of a language, you must read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, etc. And when you read these kinds of books, the most important is to read the book as a whole. It is not possible for you to stop to think about every word that you don’t know. You can’t enjoy a story if you stop many times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. That may even affect your understanding of the story.
When you read this kind of books, you’ll usually have to rely mainly on the context (上下文) to help you. If you meet a word that you don’t know, don’t take too much attention to look it up. You will probably meet it once more a few pages later in a different context, and then you can guess its meaning exactly.
The methods above may help you to improve your reading skills. Have a try!

10.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “rely”?

11.When you read, _________ may prevent understanding the story as a whole.
A.stopping half a dozen times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary
B.stopping and thinking about the meaning of the whole story
C.paying less attention to look new words up
D.getting on with the book as a whole
12.When you read novels for pleasure, _________ is the main purpose.
A.to look up new words in the dictionary
B.to grasp the meaning of the whole story
C.to pay more attention to new words
D.to think about the meaning of each new word
(D)
Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something they are interested in. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “use it or lose it”! Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. Practice makes perfect. Good learners are also not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. You have to know how to study. Good learners find out the best ways to learn well. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. Good learners also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning. Learning is a life-long journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn l becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.
13.How many good habits do successful learners may have according to the passage?

Teachers and doctors who wanted to help deaf people also went to Paris and had lessons. Then they taught sign language to their students. Soon there were schools for deaf people in other countries.

I was often 25 at school, worried about whether the teachers would call on me in class and whether I’d understand their questions. I only 26 a little around my eight roommates, who tried to speak German slowly to me and didn’t seem to mind my 27 .
I chose to study three courses — reading & writing, grammar and history. All were in German and difficult, but the history class was the worst. The teacher spoke so 28 that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded every single word he said in class, but 29 helped. I had no idea what the class was really about …
Years have passed, but I still remember how it felt to struggle so hard at 30 another language. That trip was a difficult but valuable lesson. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as success.

23.句意:经过两年的学习,我努力用蹩脚的德语交流,并报名去德国完成我的学位。
perfect完美的;broken残缺的;beautiful漂亮的;normal正常的。根据“struggle to communicate”可见作者的德语并不流利,所以空格处填broken。故选B。

“This is not the way to deal with Chinese people,” said Chinese interpreter(口译译员)Zhang Jing peacefully.
Last year, China and the US held 31 important meeting. Zhang’s translation impressed the US side. One US leader even joked that her payment should 32 (increase). Zhang’s work also won her lots of fans on social media and they thought highly of her 33 (performer).
Providing translation at important 34 (event)like this is very difficult. It tests not just a person’s English skills. He or she must be able to take quick notes and think fast, too. For Zhang, 35 , it all seems to be a piece of cake.
But we all know no place 36 (build)in a day. Ever since she was in middle school, Zhang had known 37 she wanted to be, a diplomat(外交官)! She was always working hard. Every morning, Zhang got up early to follow the English news more than 38 (two). She spent lots of time doing translation exercises. She would always ask herself, “Could I have done better?” Of all her classmates, her teacher thought the girl made 39 (great)progress.
Do you want to be as good at speaking English as Zhang? Work hard towards your goals and never give up. That’s just the key to 40 (successful).
【答案】
31.an 32.be increased 33.performance 34.events 35.however 36.is built 37.what 38.twice 39.the greatest 40.success
【解析】本文是一篇新闻报道,介绍了著名口译员张京在中美会议上的出色表现及其学习英语的韧劲最终让她获得了成功。
35.句意:去年,中美举行了一次重要会议。根据“held…important meeting”可知,表示一次重要会议;important是元音音素开头的单词,因此前面用不定冠词an。故填an。
36.句意:一位美国领导人甚至开玩笑说,她的工资应该提高。根据“her payment should…”可知,本句主语“her payment”和谓语“increase”是被动关系,又根据“should”可知,本句是含有情态动词的被动语态,结构是:should be done。故填be increased。
37.句意:张的作品也为她在社交媒体上赢得了很多粉丝,他们高度评价了她的表现。根据“they thought highly of her…”可知,形容词性物主代词her后应该跟名词。故填performance。
38.句意:在这样的重要场合提供翻译是非常困难的。根据“Providing translation at important…like this”可知,此处指的是像这次会议一样的重要场合,所指的数量不止一个,故名词event应用复数形式。故填events。
39.句意:然而,对张来说,这一切似乎都是小菜一碟。根据“He or she must be able to take quick notes and think fast, too.”和“For Zhang…it all seems to be a piece of cake.”可知,前后句是转折关系,且前后有逗号隔开,因此可以用however。故填however。
40.句意:但我们都知道,没有地方是一天建成的。根据“no place…in a day.”可知,主语“place”和谓语“build”之间为被动关系,因此这里是一般现在时的被动语态,故应用“be+过去分词”结构,place为单数,因此be动词为is,动词build应用过去分词形式。故填is built。
41.句意:从上中学起,张京就知道自己想成为什么样的人,那就是外交家!根据下文“a diplomat”可知,此处指的是张京知道自己想成为什么样的人,故应用what引导宾语从句。故填what。
42.句意:张京早早起床去听英语新闻不止两回。根据“Zhang got up early to follow the English news more than…”可知,此处应填表次数的单词,two可转换为twice,意为“两次”。故填twice。
43.句意:她的老师认为这个女孩进步最大。根据上文“Of all her classmates”可知,此处是在三者以上的范围内进行比较,故应用形容词最高级形式,即the greatest。故填the greatest。
44.句意:这正是成功的关键。根据“the key to”可知,the key to中间的“to”是介词,后面跟名词或者动名词。故填success。

Teachers and doctors who wanted to help deaf people also went to Paris and had lessons. Then they taught sign language to their students. Soon there were schools for deaf people in other countries.
