What is a GPA?
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.
How to calculate a GPA?
● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
● Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
Example: Academic Transcript of Jane Smith Winter 2023

What are the consequences of failing college courses?
● Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organizations and program choices, as competitive programs require top GPAs.
● Most financial aid programs require a specific GPA.A sharp drop in GPA due to several course failures may lead to withdrawal from financial aid programs, unless you retake the courses and pass.
● For college athletes on sports scholarships, failing courses repeatedly can lead to losing scholarships and team sports.
● Failing multiple courses can result in school removal and affect future applications.

College professors these days face an ever-higher bar to get the attention of their students, forced to compete with smartphones and laptops in large lecture halls. But when your professor is a social media star, it’s a little bit easier.
Tatiana Erukhimova, who teaches physics at Texas A&M University, has managed to get her students, as well as future generations, excited about the science. Known as “Dr. Tatiana” to her students and online fan base, the professor performs physics tricks with boundless energy and enthusiasm. In the kid-friendly videos, Erukhimova uses a range of everyday objects in her experiments, from pingpong balls and toilet paper. Her department’s YouTube page has about 2.5 million followers. She got famous on YouTube.
It’s clear she knows what it takes to get young people excited about a hard science. But it wasn’t always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago, she struggled to grab the attention of her younger students. She was used to teaching juniors, as she had for a few years prior to that. By junior year, students enrolled in physics are committed to learn, she says. With them, she could walk through the syllabus (教学大纲) on day one, and still command the room. But when it comes to teaching a large lecture hall of 100-plus first-year students, first impressions are make or break.
By the second semester, she found her footing, adjusting her approach to get her students engaged. “Talk to your students before and after class, walk up and down the stairs when you teach your class rather than stay on the stage. And don’t just lecture, talk to them — make it interactive.” She says. And, of course, add showy demonstrations to help students to connect these abstract concepts with real life.
She’s earned more than just recognition on social media. In October, she was honored with a national award for science outreach “for leadership in bringing the excitement of physics through innovative education programs.”
24.What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To present a challenge.
C.To analyze. D.To provide some backgrounds.
25.What challenge do college freshman courses pose to Tatiana?
A.Introducing the syllabus to her students.
B.Preventing her students’ absent-mindedness.
C.Creating a lasting impression on her students.
D.Finding a lecture hall large enough for her students.
26.How did Tatiana find her footing in her teaching?
A.By lecturing students more. B.By bonding with her freshmen.
C.By becoming a social medium star. D.By answering all her students’ questions.
27.Which best describes Tatiana Erukhimova?
A.Rigid. B.Humorous. C.Demanding. D.Flexible.

I absolutely could have gone my entire life without ever reading Moby-Dick, but unfortunately, I have read it. Twice. I’ve had to read it twice.
I can trace it as far back as middle school — the teachers’ strong desire to push classic literature on students as much as possible. And it makes sense, in some ways. There are benefits to being well read —a larger vocabulary, mental stimulation, concentration and understanding of literary references in the world. But at the same time, being well read doesn’t necessarily mean only reading classics for the sake of reading classics.
This isn’t to say that these classic novels serve no purpose in curriculum (课程) or in the literary world — classics are, in many ways, vital to a well-rounded education in literature. But so are pieces of contemporary (当代的) literature and books from centuries ago that haven’t been recognized classics. So yes, there’s room for classic novels. But right now, there’s too much room for classic novels.
There are also many modern sayings that come from classics — like “Big brother is watching,” from George Orwell’s 1984, “Tomorrow is another day,” from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind and “Hey Boo,” which originally comes from To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s worth something to be well versed in texts that have made an impact on the construct of modern day language. But at the same time, when classic novels are put on syllabi (教学大纲) or inserted into high school curriculum, novels should be selected with care —not just selected because it’s “what everyone in the field reads” —which yes, has been said to me before.
And as far as contemporary literature goes, there seems to be an opinion that it doesn’t offer as much wisdom and has less value and, therefore, we can’t learn as much from it. I’ve found this to be most untrue. After all, we tend to learn best from things that we can connect to, and contemporary literature is often the most relatable. And though it hasn’t had the time to become a classic, the structure and syntax (句法) holds its own. It’s different from classic work, but it’s not less valuable.
So let’s take a step back from the classics. We think that they’re pushing us forward, when, really, they might be standing in our way.
28.Why did the author read Moby-Dick twice?
A.To stimulate her mind. B.To enlarge her vocabulary.
C.To meet her teacher’s requirement. D.To better understand literary references.
29.Why does the author mention 1984 and Gone with the Wind?
A.To prove classics are worth reading.
B.To show some classics are out of date.
C.To compare classics with contemporary literature.
D.To advise schools to include more classics in curriculum.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards contemporary literary works?
A.They should not be taken lightly. B.They are not as valuable as classics.
C.They are more important than classics. D.They will surely become classics soon.
31.How should we treat classics in the author’s eyes?
A.Avoid them entirely. B.Treat them seriously.
C.Promote them at high school. D.Reconsider their significance.
D
To produce the classic clothing, blue jeans, producers rely on indigo dye (靛蓝染料), the only molecule known to provide jeans’ unique, beloved color. While indigo itself naturally comes from a plant, growing demand for blue jeans throughout the 20th century gave rise to synthetic (合成的) indigo, which is now more commonly used.
Indigo is the dye that makes jeans blue, but it doesn’t mix with water. To dye clothes, usually, chemicals are needed to make the color stick to the cloth. But in Denmark, scientists have created a new way to dye clothes using an enzyme (酶), which is a kind of protein that can cause chemical reactions, instead of harmful chemicals. This new method is better for the environment and doesn’t use poisonous stuff.
The chemical process for dyeing blue jeans has persisted for the last century. Workers are exposed to the poisonous chemicals, which also pollute the environment near factories. Waste water from those factories often ends up in waterways, damaging local ecosystems and even dyeing rivers blue.
Ditte Hededam Welner, the study’s lead researcher, says their new enzyme works really well and is strong enough for making lots of jeans without breaking down. This enzyme makes dyeing with indican, which is like indigo, much less harmful to the planet — about 92% better than the old way.
However, the new method doesn’t fix all the environmental problems of making jeans. Making a single pair of jeans uses a lot of water — enough to fill many bathtubs — from growing the cotton to putting the final touches on the jeans.
Even though the new dyeing process is better for the environment, it’s not always easy or cheap to change to it. Welner’s team isn’t sure if jeans companies will find it easy or affordable to switch to this method. It costs a little bit more — just seven cents extra per pair of jeans — to use the enzyme for dyeing. But Welner believes it’s worth it because it’s much better for the environment.
32.Why was synthetic indigo created in the 20th century?
A.It made jeans’ color unique. B.It was easy to dye cloth with it.
C.People liked jeans made from it. D.People were in greater need of jeans.
33.Which is an advantage of the new method?
A.The colour is more beautiful than the synthetic indigo. B.The market can keep stable goods supplies.
C.The dye is more environmentally friendly. D.Enzyme facilitates the advance of science.
34.What makes Welner worried about the new method?
A.Environmental benefits. B.Production costs.
C.Water consumption. D.Laborer shortage.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Eco-Friendly Innovation: Enzyme Dyeing For Jeans B.Water Usage In Cotton And Jeans Manufacturing
C.The History Of Indigo Dye In Jeans Production D.Challenges: New Styles Of Jeans
36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for an area suitable for study. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. This helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
A.Take advantage of class time to listen to what the teacher says.
B.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
C.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.
D.Maybe you are an average student.
E.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
F.Make full use of class time to take notes of everything the teacher says in class.
G.This will help you understand the next class.

Not long ago I saw the following headline: “Anti-homework trend goes global.”
Anti-homework? Where was this trend when I was in school? And if I tried to “forget” that English 41 or history report, my dad was there to 42 me: “Don’t you have homework to do?” In short, my teachers and my parents put great 43 on the significance of homework.
No longer. From what I have read, there are powerful parental forces 44 to make homework a thing of the past. The reasoning: It stresses children and it 45 “precious family time.” As a teacher, one of the problems I often encounter is that students 46 far too little importance to their studies.
When I was a kid, homework 47 created precious family time. I still remember, after supper, clearing the table and 48 the dishes with my schoolbooks. And then my parents would sit down with me and, to the best of their 49 , help me when and where they could.
I’ve often thought that the homework problem could be 50 if one thought of homework in terms of learning to play a musical instrument. For me, this was the clarinet (单簧管), which I began learning at age 9. “Practice an hour a day,” was Mr. Markiewicz’s no-nonsense 51 .
Because my 52 was strong, I did practice an hour a day, and I made great progress. And so let’s get rid of homework, but only the word “homework,” and replace it with “ 53 ”. As a teacher, it’s all I ask: that my students listen 54 in class and then go home to practice, so that when they return to me to show how much they understand, I — and their parents — can be proud of them.
What could be 55 than that?

Health is 56 most important thing in the world. Nothing is more important than health. It was an exceptionally bright weekend morning. The sun was shining. The birds were chirping(吱喳叫). 7-year-old Chase Proust was filled with enormous joy. The reason for his excitement was a promise made by his father, Steven Proust, who had promised to take Chase and his sister, Abigail, on a much-awaited family picnic.
The Proust family had been looking forward to this special outing for a long time. It had been a while since they had last spent a day together in the great outdoors. They began their day by packing their favorite snacks, a colorful Frisbee(飞盘), and a kite with a long tail that danced in the wind. As they set out happily from their home, they were all expecting a day full of fun, laughter, and precious family moments.
Their chosen destination was a beautiful park in Jacksonville, Florida. The park was famous for its lots of green plants, bright flowers, and a ca lm lake that shined in the sunlight. They put their picnic blanket under a big oak tree that gave lots of shade, and Steven Proust quickly got lost in his favorite book. At the same time, the kids were playing close by, and their happy sounds filled the quiet area.
Their day took an unexpected yet exciting turn when Abigail, Chase’s curious and adventurous sister, spotted a brightly colored butterfly. She was curious and chose to follow the butterfly. It led them on a path away from where they were having their picnic. The butterfly flew ahead and brought them to a secret area in the park, a lovely field full of wildflowers in all sorts of colors. It looked amazing, like a hidden garden from a storybook. They discovered different types of flowers they had never seen before, watched a variety of insects going about their day, and even spotted a few rabbits hopping around. The whole situation was attractive, and a magical moment that they would remember for years to come.

W: Yeah! Time really flies! How are you getting along now? Well, I mean, do you still teach in the medical school?
M: Oh, no. I worked there until three years ago. I’m working in a travel agency now. What about you?
W: I still work for the same hospital. You know I love being a doctor, and I won’t give it up.
M: I understand. Ever since the day I got to know you, I have realised that you’re heartily devoted to anything you choose to do.
W: Oh, you’re flattering me again.
M: No, I’m just telling the truth. By the way, are you still in touch with Emma?
W: We had kept in touch. But two years ago, she left for England and ever since then, I have received no information from her.
M: For a long time, I have been wishing that someday we could get together again.
W: Well, I hope so.

● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
● Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
Example: Academic Transcript of Jane Smith Winter 2023

D.Flexible.
根据第一段的“College professors these days face an ever-higher bar to get the attention of their students, forced to compete with smartphones and laptops in large lecture halls. But when your professor is a social media star, it’s a little bit easier. (如今,大学教授在吸引学生注意力方面面临着越来越高的门槛,他们被迫在大型演讲厅与智能手机和笔记本电脑竞争。但当你的教授是社交媒体明星时,这就容易一点了。)” 可知,作者首先提出了大学教授在吸引学生注意力方面面临的挑战,然后引出了当教授成为社交媒体明星时,情况会有所不同的主题。由此可推断,作者在第一段的目的是引入话题。故选A。
根据第三段中的“But it wasn’t always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago, she struggled to grab the attention of her younger students. (但事实并非总是如此。大约20年前,当她第一次开始教授大学新生时,她很难吸引年轻学生的注意力。)”可知,对Tatiana来说,给大学一年级新生上课的挑战在于抓住他们注意力,防止学生心不在焉。故选B。
26.细节理解题。 根据第四段的““Talk to your students before and after class, walk up and down the stairs when you teach your class rather than stay on the stage. And don’t just lecture, talk to them—make it interactive.” She says. And, of course, add showy demonstrations to help students to connect these abstract concepts with real life. (她说:“课前和课后与学生交谈,上课时上下楼梯,而不是呆在舞台上。不要只是讲课,要与他们交谈——要使其互动。”当然,还可以添加炫耀性的演示,帮助学生将这些抽象概念与现实生活联系起来。)”可知,Tatiana调整她的教学方法来吸引学生的参与,这些策略表明她通过与新生建立联系(即加强互动和沟通)找到了教学的立足点。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据全文描述,以及第一段的“College professors these days face an ever-higher bar to get the attention of their students, forced to compete with smartphones and laptops in large lecture halls. (如今,大学教授在吸引学生注意力方面面临着越来越高的门槛,他们被迫在大型演讲厅与智能手机和笔记本电脑竞争。但当你的教授是社交媒体明星时,这就容易一点了。)”可知,Tatiana Erukhimova能够灵活调整教学策略,利用社交媒体和互动演示使物理课程生动有趣,由此可推知,她是非常灵活的。故选D。
C
由第二段“I can trace it as far back as middle school — the teachers’ strong desire to push classic literature on students as much as possible.(我可以追溯到中学时代——老师们强烈希望尽可能多地向学生推荐经典文学。)”
由第四段“There are also many modern sayings that come from classics(也有许多来自经典的现代谚语)”和“It’s worth something to be well versed in texts that have made an impact on the construct of modern day language.(精通对现代语言结构产生影响的文本是值得的)”可知,举例这两部经典作品,是为了说明经典值得阅读。故选A。
由第五段“And though it hasn’t had the time to become a classic, the structure and syntax (句法) holds its own. It’s different from classic work, but it’s not less valuable.(虽然它还没有来得及成为经典,但它的结构和语法仍然保持着自己的风格。它不同于经典作品,但它的价值并不低)”可推知,作者认为当代文学作品不应该被轻视。故选A。
由最后一段“So let’s take a step back from the classics. We think that they’re pushing us forward, when, really, they might be standing in our way.(所以让我们从经典中退后一步。我们认为它们在推动我们前进,而实际上,它们可能会阻碍我们前进)”可推知,作者认为对待经典文学,我们要重新思考它的重要性。故选D。

根据文章第一段“While indigo itself naturally comes from a plant, growing demand for blue jeans throughout the 20th century gave rise to synthetic (合成的) indigo, which is now more commonly used.”(虽然靛蓝本身来自天然植物,但在整个20世纪,人们对蓝色牛仔裤的需求不断增长,于是现在更常使用的合成靛蓝应运而生)可知,20世纪,由于人们对牛仔裤的需求增加,才有了合成靛蓝。故选D。
根据文章第四段中的“This enzyme makes dyeing with indican, which is like indigo, much less harmful to the planet — about 92% better than the old way.”(这种酶可以用类似靛蓝的籼稻染色,对地球的危害要小得多——比旧方法好92%左右)可知,新方法使用酶替代有害化学品染色,对环境更友好,减少了对地球的伤害。故选C。
根据文章最后一段中的“Even though the new dyeing process is better for the environment, it’s not always easy or cheap to change to it. Welner’s team isn’t sure if jeans companies will find it easy or affordable to switch to this method. It costs a little bit more — just seven cents extra per pair of jeans — to use the enzyme for dyeing.”(尽管新的染色工艺对环境更好,但改变它并不总是容易或便宜的。
根据第二段“But in Denmark, scientists have created a new way to dye clothes using an enzyme (酶), which is a kind of protein that can cause chemical reactions, instead of harmful chemicals. This new method is better for the environment and doesn't use poisonous stuff.”(但在丹麦,科学家们发明了一种用酶而不是有害化学物质给衣服染色的新方法。 故选A。
36.下文“You probably think you will never be a top student.(你可能认为你永远不会成为一个优等生)”说明你觉得你自己不是优等生。空处引出下文,D项中的“an average student”和下文中的“never be a top student”相呼应,说明你可能不是一名优等生,而是一名中等生或者差生。
37.上文“After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.(列完这个清单后,你应该把你的时间安排好。首先是你吃饭、睡觉、穿衣等的时间,然后决定一个好的、有规律的学习时间)”说明需要列出待办事项和安排时间表,特别强调了安排学习时间的同时也要考虑吃饭、睡觉等日常活动可知,空处承接上文,内容与时间设定有关。B项“别忘了留出足够的时间娱乐”承接上文,符合语境。故选B。
38.上文“Make good use of your time in class.(充分利用课堂时间)”说明本段内容与课堂时间有关。 故选A。
39.上文“Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read that material.(定期学习。放学回家后,复习笔记,复习老师第二天要讨论的要点,然后阅读这些材料)”说明回家后要复习笔记、预习老师即将讲解的重点,并阅读相关材料,这显然是为了加深理解和记忆。空处承接上文,指出了上述做法带来的好处。G项中的This指代前文中的“go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read that material”,说明“复习老师第二天要讨论的要点,然后阅读这些材料能够帮助你理解下一堂课”。故选G。
40.下文“You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.(在你尝试过这些之后,你可能会发现许多其他的东西)”说明尝试这些方法之后可能会发现更多其他方法。 下文中的many others指代C项中的“other methods that might help you with your studying”,所以C项“还有其他方法可以帮助你学习。”

His hard work was worth it when he had a beautiful, sweet-smelling bunch of flowers ready, with the brightest ones from the field. Chase wanted to bring joy to his mom, because she really liked flowers.
As the sun set, they went back, with Chase carefully holding the flowers for his mom. They walked back through the park, their hearts full of the day’s adventures.
