Far too many people — even hardcore (铁杆) exercisers — view stretching as an annoying and optional thing for bookending their workouts. Even worse, it’s something that they skip after exercise for no other reason than they can’t be bothered to actually do it. 16 So who cares about going through a boring stretching routine?
Well, we all should. Science shows that stretching isn’t actually literal — you’re not even “stretching” your muscles at all. 17 That does wonders for both your joints and your muscles. 18 Whether you’ve been walking the steps at your nearest high-school football stadium or you’ve gone through an amazing weightlifting routine, it’s vital for you to take a few minutes to stretch after sweating.
If you don’t stretch, it doesn’t do your body any favors. What happens to your body when you skip your post-exercise stretching?
You could feel sick. You won’t be surprised to know that when you exercise, you raise your heart rate for a period of time. After physical activity, your heart is still beating faster than normal, your body temperature is higher and your blood vessels are dilated (扩张). 19
Your muscles will likely become inflexible and more sore. When you exercise your muscles, it produces an inflammatory (炎症) response in the form of lactic acid (乳酸). 20 When you rest or recover, your body naturally breaks down and gets rid of that lactic acid. One thing that helps your body handle that lactic acid is stretching. It helps you distribute oxygen throughout your body and muscles, which can reduce lactic acid production and rid your muscles of any accumulation of lactic acid.
A.Stretching helps your blood flow.
B.In fact, it reduces your risk of injury.
C.Stretching is crucial after a workout.
D.This means if you stop too fast, you could pass out.
E.It is actually what causes your muscles to become sore.
F.After all, you’ve just exercised and your body feels warm, loose, and great.
G.The true purpose is to lengthen and mobilize the connective tissue around your muscle.

On the day of my birthday, I was really excited since I was going to an amusement park for the first time in my life with some of my friends, together with my parents.

My parents handed me some money and told us to enjoy the rides. We first queued up for the roller coaster, which was the greatest attraction of all. Soon we were seated on the ride and held on to the bars holding us firmly to our seats. 17 The wind moved through our hair and we tightly closed our eyes. It was really thrilling experience!
We headed straight for the bumper cars and soon started bumping into each other with as much force as we could, enjoying ourselves to the fullest. Then we went for those shooting games. 18 We were soon loaded with some soft toys which made us happy, though the age for playing with soft toys was long gone for us.
19 We entered the house with heads held high, but came out with our hearts beating fast. And we were shaking from head to foot.
During all this, we hadn’t noticed time fly and it was getting dark, so we said goodbye and returned home. 20
A.There we can get a prize if we hit the target.

In the more than 6, 000 years of living in cities, humans have always had to find solutions to problems concerning how they live and work, such as sanitation (卫生), transportation and nature protection. In addition, important technological innovations require basic facilities: the electric grid; telephone and cell-phone networks and so on. 36 They can help provide for improved delivery and quality of services.
A smart city is a place that uses digital methods to provide more efficient networks and services for the benefit of its residents and businesses. It means smarter urban transportation, advanced water supply and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings. 37
Smart cities rely heavily on automation and the internet of things. According to a global technology organization, a smart city works in four steps: collection, analysis, communication, and action. 38 After the data collected is analyzed, the result will be communicated to the decision-makers, who will take action to improve the city life of its residents.
39 Singapore, for example, has introduced a wide range of smart technologies inboth its public and private areas in 2024. To help with the aging population, it introduced a digital health system allowing video consultations as well as devices that can monitor their health.
40 However, as with any significant citywide technology initiative, implementation (实施) of smart cities takes vision, investment, and careful planning to ensure adoption and success. Taking the first steps toward picturing what your smart city might look like is, well, the smart thing to do.
A.What does a smart city look like?
B.It’s hard to ignore the many benefits connected cities offer.
C.Today, using cutting-edge technologies, smart cities cover them all.
D.It also means a more interactive city administration and safer public spaces.
E.It can provide better transportation, safer society and effective decision and so on.
F.Smart city technologies have already been applied in various countries across the world.
G.During this process, a set of smart sensors will collect real-time data about people and facilities.

You may or may not be aware of this, but reading fiction is highly beneficial, and there are scientific studies to back this up. 16 Read on to discover more reasons to continue reading and rereading your favourite fiction masterpieces.
Your imagination can be significantly improved and developed when reading fiction. Imagination allows you to be more creative. 17 What’s more, the ability to imagine things influences everything a person does, thinks about and creates, regardless of their professions.
Empathy (共鸣) is all about standing in someone else’s shoes and seeing things from their point of view. So developing a relationship with the characters and becoming interested in the journey they are going through can help you do that after you’ve closed the book. 18
Reading fiction improves people’s mood considerably and brings it to a pleasurable state. It even provides health benefits and relaxation. Regular readers have lower stress levels, lower rates of depression.
19 When you read, you expose yourself to new vocabulary and new language. You might even get to read from authors who have different local languages and speech patterns! Who said learning can’t happen under a cozy blanket while holding a book in one hand and hot cocoa in the other?
20 The psychology of reading fiction is often explored, so clearly others are curious as well. And when a person indirectly experiences an event related to an emotion, for example, if they read about what happens to a character and how they feel about it, the same region of the brain is activated as if they experienced the event themselves.
A.It can also help you with your problem—solving skills.
B.Reading fiction can help you master multiple languages at the same time.
C.Reading fiction also helps you build your language skills and vocabulary.
D.The relationship with the characters makes you think more about others.
E.A recent study showed that reading fiction can enrich one’s world view.
F.Have you ever wondered what happens in your brain when you read fiction?
G.Why does reading fiction have such an effect on improving one’s imagination?

Online courses have become popular in many countries. There are different kinds of online courses, but most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom. Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone. 16 Of course, watching videos on a screen is not the same as taking part in a real class.
17 In Singapore, eight schools have been chosen to try new ways of using technology in the classroom. The schools have tablets(平板电脑)and touchscreens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms. 18 Through them, students can communicate with each other and work on projects together.
In South Korea, some students have been taught English by teachers in the Philippines and other countries since 2011. The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms via the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher. 19
Thanks to technology, more and more ways of teaching and learning are being developed.
20 But one thing is for sure – there has never been a more interesting time to be a student.
A.E-learning can be successful.
B.There are also social media platforms(平台).
C.Other kinds of e-learning are being tested around the world.

开头第一句“In the more than 6, 000 years of living in cities, humans have always had to find solutions to problems concerning how they live and work, such as sanitation (卫生), transportation and nature protection. (在生活在城市的6000多年里,人类总是必须找到解决他们如何生活和工作等问题的办法,如卫生设施、交通和自然保护。)”可知,第一段讲城市从古至今的发展。此外第一段最后一句“They can help provide for improved delivery and quality of services. (它们可以帮助提供改进和服务质量)”中的they 指的是上句中提到的复数名词,而下文中主要讲的是智慧城市,所以,应该此处提到智慧城市以承上启下。C项“Today, using cutting-edge technologies, smart cities cover them all(如今,利用尖端技术,智能城市覆盖了这一切。)”
根据上文“It means smarter urban transportation, advanced water supply and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings. (这意味着更智能的城市交通、先进的供水和更有效的建筑照明和供暖方式。)”中的“It means . . . ”结构可知,D项“It also means a more interactive city administration and safer public spaces(这也意味着一个更互动的城市管理和更安全的公共空间)”与上文结构一致,一起说明智慧城市的好处,符合题意。

根据第四段“Smart city technologies have already been applied in some countries and cities around the world. Singapore, for example, has introduced a wide range of smart technologies in both its public and private sectors since launching its Smart Nation initiative in 2014. (智慧城市技术已经在世界上一些国家和城市得到了应用。例如,新加坡自2014年启动智能国家计划以来,在公共和私营部门引入了广泛的智能技术)”可知,提到新加坡,是为了进行举例说明智慧城市技术的应用。因此第四段首句即主旨句应该是说智慧城市已经得到应用。F项“Smart city technologies have already been applied in various countries across the world. (智能城市技术已经在世界多个国家得到应用)”符合题意。故选F。
40.根据最后一段“However, as with any significant citywide technology initiative, implementation (实施) of smart cities takes vision, investment, and careful planning to ensure adoption and success. Taking the first steps toward picturing what your smart city might look like is, well, the smart thing to do. (然而,就像任何重要的全市技术创新一样,智能城市的实施需要远见、投资和仔细的规划,以确保采用和成功。要想想象你的智慧城市的样子,迈出第一步,是明智的做法)”中however之后说明了智慧城市的建设任重道远。根据逻辑,前文应该提到是比较乐观的事物。结合前文,B项“It’s hard to ignore the many benefits connected cities offer. (尽管我们很难忽视互联城市所提供的许多好处)”符合题意。故选B。
