Most of us set a goal with energy and motivation. If it is achieved, we will feel we are on cloud nine. But in most cases, we can’t reach our goals easily. Why do we often fail to hit the target? The answer lies in the disconnection between our brains’ evaluation of the reward and the “get it done” realities that influence our behaviour. Our brains are rewarddriven organs charged by neurotransmitters(神经递质) that fuel our drives and desires, and it’s easy for us to get carried away in this chemical tsunami. So, when we set a goal, our focus is on the reward. We picture ourselves getting the reward, and how we’ll feel when we make it, which pushes us into action. But once we begin, we come face to face with what’s really required to reach the goal and our focus shifts from the reward to the effort. In other words, a focus on reward fuels the pursuit, but a focus on the effort takes over when the work starts. For example, getting up early to exercise for a new healthy lifestyle might seem like a good choice, but once your alarm goes off on a cold January morning, the reward isn’t enough to get you up and out of bed. When we face the reality of our choices, we realise the effort is too much and give up. In fairness, though, we don’t always have the best sense of how much effort something will require, especially if it’s a goal we haven’t pursued before. Getting better at setting goals has much to do with figuring this out and not letting ourselves forget the lesson. Next time, begin our goal pursuits with as much realistic acknowledgment of the effort required as possible. Then, once we begin, refocus back on the reward and continue the effort. ( B )1.What does the underlined phrase “on cloud nine” mean in Paragraph 1? A.Scared. B.Overjoyed. C.Restless. D.Confused. ( A )2.What may account for one’s unachieved goal? A.Aiming high, working less. B.Speaking more, doing less. C.More efforts, less speed. D.More pains, more gains. ( B )3.What do people often fail to recognise in setting goals? A.Pains. B.The effort. C.Plans. D.The reward. ( D )4.What’s the author’s advice to us? A.Refocus back on the goal. B.Achieve our goals step by step. C.Accept failure and learn from the past. D.Set practical goals and work consistently. 根据画线短语的上文“Most of us set a goal with energy and motivation. If it is achieved, we will feel 根据第二段中的“So, when we set a goal, our focus is on the reward. We picture ourselves getting the reward, and how we’ll feel when we make it, which pushes us into action. But once we begin, we come face to face with what’s really required to reach the goal and our focus shifts from the reward to the effort.(所以,当我们设定目标时,我们关注的是奖励。 以及第三段最后一句“When we face the reality of our choices, we realise the effort is too much and give up.(当我们面对选择的现实时,我们意识到需要付出的努力太多了,于是放弃了。)” 故选A。 根据第四段第一句“In fairness, though, we don’t always have the best sense of how much effort something will require, especially if it’s a goal we haven’t pursued before.(不过,公平地说,我们并不总是最清楚某件事需要付出多少努力,尤其是当它是一个我们以前没有追求过的目标时。)” 根据最后一段“Next time, begin our goal pursuits with as much realistic acknowledgment of the effort required as possible. Then, once we begin, refocus back on the reward and continue the effort.(下次,在开始追求目标时,尽可能现实地确认所需要的努力。 Many of us like to eat out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing large, fatfilled dishes and sugarcharged desserts, which are not 1 cooked at home. The recent rise of light meals, however, gives diners a 2 choice. According to Economic Daily, lowcalorie, lowfat and highfibre(纤维) meals have become 3 in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms. Having a light meal, however, doesn’t 4 eating only vegetables. Different from the meatfree lifestyle, a good light 5 avoids oily, salty and hot food. 6 , it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Healthy nutrients are the 7 of the light meal. These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and 8 your weight. That’s probably why so many people, 9 millennials(千禧世代), are into them. Diners see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat,” wrote The Telegraph. “ 10 eating several light meals, I felt my appetite has reduced. I now 11 light flavours(口味),” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a 12 of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. “These changes in eating behaviour are in 13 with deeper changes in how people think about food,” says Walter Willett, chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet 14 , not quantity, is important for both weight control and longterm wellbeing,” Willett told The New York Times. So next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will 15 not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts. ( C )1.A.individually B.slightly C.easily D.eagerly ( A )2.A.smarter B.safer C.tougher D.calmer ( B )3.A.awkward B.popular C.positive D.flexible ( D )4.A.benefit B.contribute C.press D.mean ( B )5.A.memory B.dish C.balance D.design ( C )6.A.However B.Still C.Instead D.Indeed ( A )7.A.theme B.reflection C.fashion D.option ( D )8.A.gaining B.losing C.gathering D.controlling ( A )9.A.especially B.normally C.definitely D.originally ( B )10.A.While B.After C.Before D.Until ( C )11.A.seek B.acquire C.prefer D.challenge ( D )12.A.view B.resource C.function D.mixture ( B )13.A.exchange B.contact C.battle D.case ( C )14.A.detail B.content C.quality D.behaviour ( D )15.A.focus B.judge C.respond D.satisfy 【语篇解读】据《经济日报》报道,低热量、低脂肪和高纤维的餐食在中国的餐馆和在线外卖平台上越来越受欢迎。 A.individually分别地,各自地;B.slightly稍微;C.easily容易地;D.eagerly迫切地。 A.smarter更明智的;B.safer更安全的;C.tougher更困难的;D.calmer更平静的。故选A。 A.awkward令人尴尬的;B.popular受欢迎的;C.positive积极的;D.flexible灵活的。故选B。 4.D 根据下文中的“it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruit and vegetables”可知,吃一顿清淡的饭并不意味着只吃蔬菜。A.benefit使受益;B.contribute贡献;C.press压;D.mean意味着。 A.memory记忆;B.dish菜肴;C.balance平衡;D.design设计。 A.however然而;B.still仍然;C.instead相反;D.indeed的确。 A.theme主题;B.reflection反映;C.fashion时尚;D.option选择。故选A。 A.gain得到;B.lose失去;C.gather聚集;D.control控制。 A.especially尤其;B.normally正常地;C.definitely肯定地;D.originally起初。故选A。 A.while当……的时候;B.after在……之后;C.before在……之前;D.until直到…… A.seek寻求;B.acquire获得;C.prefer更喜欢;D.challenge挑战。 A.view观点;B.resource资源;C.function功能;D.mixture混合物。 A.exchange交换;B.contact联系;C.battle战斗;D.case例子。 in contact with意为“与…… A.detail细节;B.content内容;C.quality质量;D.behaviour行为。 A.focus集中;B.judge判断;C.respond回答;D.satisfy满足。故选D。 Ⅶ. A healthy lifestyle helps people live a harmonious life.
