For hundreds of years, visitors to Loch Ness, the famous lake in Scotland(17), have described seeing a monsterlike creature that some people believe lives deep in the lake. They call it “Nessie”.
Among the many theories about Nessie, the most wellknown one is that Nessie is a longnecked dinosaur(18) that somehow survived after other dinosaurs died out. Some other people believe that the creature is actually
an extremely large fish. Now the mystery of Nessie may have no place to hide. A New Zealand professor is leading his international team to the lake next month. They plan to take some of the water and study genetic material from the lake to see what species live there. The 51yearold professor says he does not believe the stories about Nessie at all(19), but he wants to take people on an interesting trip and communicate some science to them along the way.The professor said that when creatures move in water, they leave small pieces of their DNA behind. He and his
team will take water from different points around the lake and at different depths. After removing the impure material from the water, they will compare the acquired DNA with all known species. He said they should have answers by the end of the year.

Spring Morning—by Meng Haoran(689—740)of the Tang Dynasty
This spring morning in bed I’m lying,
Not to awake till birds are crying.
After one night of wind and showers,
How many are the fallen flowers?
Written in a Village South of the Capital—by Cui Hu(772—846)of the Tang Dynasty
In this house on this day last year a pink face vied,
In beauty with the pink peach blossoms side by side.
I do not know today where the pink face has gone,
In the vernal breeze still smile pink peach blossoms full blown.
Happy Rain on a Spring Night(Excerpts)—by Du Fu(712—770)of the Tang Dynasty
Good rain knows its time right,
it will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it wets everything.
Dreaming of the Southern Shore—by Bai Juyi(772—846)of the Tang Dynasty
Fair Southern shore,
With scenes I adore,
At sunrise riverside flowers redder than fire,
In spring green waves grow as blue as sapphire.
Which I can’t but admire.
Love Seeds—by Wang Wei(701—761) of the Tang Dynasty

Gather them till full is your hand;

根据第四首诗后两句“At sunrise riverside flowers redder than fire, In spring green waves grow as blue as sapphire.(日出江花红胜火,春来江水绿如蓝。)”

When I was young, strong heroes in my favorite novels gave me courage and provide a map for my life. And I didn’t discover the power of poetry until I was in my twenties and making my way in New York. That’s when life got serious and broke my heart.
A teacher who later became a dear friend introduced me to Edna St. Vincent Millay (ESVM), the famous poet who lived in Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century. One of my favorite possessions, a valuable firstedition copy of ESVM’s short poetry collection. A Few Figs from
Thistles— was a gift from this friend who was old enough to be my mother at the time. She told me the first “fig” described how I was living my life: My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh,my friends—It gives a lovely night!
I was struggling to make ends meet but always made the time for fun by hanging out with friends. Some of them of course were careless with my heart but I could always find comfort and courage in ESVM’s wise words.
Rather than bore my friends, I could fall into my sorrow—whether it hit me—cry as much as I wanted in my bedroom. I found everything I needed
in those 32 pages—hope, wisdom and encouragement. In the years since, I’ve found myself attracted to poetry whenever someone caused me pain.
Is it actually possible for something as common as a poem to save a life? I’m not certain of that but I can prove the power of words. Like a relaxing walk outside, poetry can provide a healthy distraction and a meaningful change in perspective.
Like music, poetry speaks a universal language of rhythm, and speaks truths in a language that describes emotions. So why not keep interested in poems?

根据第四段内容,尤其是最后一句“In the years since, I’ve found myself attracted to poetry whenever someone caused me pain.(从那以后的几年里,每当有人给我带来痛苦时,我就发现自己被诗歌所吸引。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Like music, poetry speaks a universal language of rhythm, and speaks truths in a language that describes emotions. So why not keep interested in poems?”

Death is a serious theme. For example, John Keats’ When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be and John Donne’s Death, Be Not Proud both discuss death in reflective ways. However, the imagery in these poems shows that while Keats believed death can only bring destruction, Donne believed death can be overcome.
Keats was afraid of death, because to him death meant the loss of those things that made his life worth living: “...on the shore/Of the wide world I stand alone, and think/Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.” In
other words, Keats’ fear was that death was a “nothingness” that would arrive before he could finish his life’s work or find his true love.
Donne had a different attitude toward death, and so the imagery in his poem is different, too. To Donne, death should “be not proud”, because it was not “mighty and dreadful”. He also said that death was like “rest and sleep”. Donne believed that we would all wake from the sleep of death to everlasting life, just as we wake from our normal sleep to our everyday lives.
Keats and Donne both knew that death was a part of life, and both poets used powerful imagery to talk about that difficult theme. The differences in this imagery show two very different attitudes toward the subject, one of which is much more positive than the other. Which poet to believe is up to the readers to decide.
Not surprisingly, the readers’ own experiences may play a part in the way they respond to these poets’ approaches. Like the two poets and their beliefs, contemporary readers also may be divided on the subject. This may explain why Keats’ and Donne’s poetry remains fascinating years after their deaths.
( )28.Which of the following may Keats agree with?
A.Death could stop him from writing poetry.
B.Death could help him find true love.
C.Death was not mighty and dreadful.
D.Death could be overcome by people.
A
( )29.What did Donne believe in his poem?
A.Death was generally powerful and terrible.
B.Death was only a ceaseless sleep.
C.Death was merely the loss of work and love.
D.Death was hardly worth the fear.
D
( )30.Why may contemporary readers view the serious subject of Keats and Donne differently?
A.Because they are attracted to the two poets’ everlasting opposite beliefs.
B.Because they are divided naturally by their positive or negative personalities.
C.Because their own life experiences affect their understandings of the poems.
D.Because their preference for the poets’ strong imageries is various.
C
( )31.Which of the following best describes the main writing style of the passage?
A.Analysis. B.Argument.
C.Comparison. D.Reasoning.
根据第二段最后一句“In other words, Keats’ fear was that death was a ‘nothingness’ that would arrive before he could finish his life’s work or find his true love.” 故选A。
根据第三段最后一句“Donne believed that we would all wake from the sleep of death to everlasting life, just as we wake from our normal sleep to our everyday lives.”
根据最后一段中“Not surprisingly, the readers’ own experiences may play a part in the way they respond to these poets’ approaches.”
根据第一段中的“However, the imagery in these poems shows that while Keats believed death can only bring destruction, Donne believed death can be overcome.”

The Road Not Taken appears as a preface(前言) to Frost’s Mountain Interval, which was published in 1916 when Europe was engulfed in World War Ⅰ. The United States would enter the war a year later. Frost wrote this poem at a time when many men doubted whether they would ever go back to what they had left.
Actually, Robert Frost wrote The Road Not Taken as a joke for a friend, the poet Edward Thomas. When they went walking together, Thomas was
habitually indecisive about which road they ought to take, and when looking back, often regretted that they should, in fact, have taken the other one. Soon after writing the poem in 1915, Frost complained to Thomas that he had read the poem to an audience of college students and that it had been “taken pretty seriously... despite doing my best to make it obvious by my manner that I was fooling... It is my fault”. However, Frost liked to make jokes, “I’m never more serious than when joking.”
Indeed, shortly after receiving this poem in a letter, Edward Thomas’ army was sent to Arras, France, where he was killed two months later. When Frost sent the poem to Thomas, Thomas initially failed to realize that the poem was about him. Instead, he believed it was a serious reflection on the need for decisive action.
Frost was disappointed that the joke fell flat and wrote back insisting that the sigh at the end of the poem was “a mock sigh, hypocritical for the fun of the thing”. The joke made Thomas angry; Thomas was hurt by this characterization of what he saw as a personal weakness—his indecisiveness,
which partly sprang from his paralyzing depression. Thomas warned Frost that most readers would not understand the poem’s playfulness and wrote, “I doubt if you can get anybody to see the fun of the thing without showing them and advising them which kind of laugh they are to turn on.” Edward Thomas was right, and the critic David Orr has referred to The Road Not Taken as a poem that “at least in its first few decades came close to being readerproof.”
( )32.What did the college students think of the poem?
A.It fooled them.
B.It deserved high praise.
C.It confused them in a way.
D.It concerned something serious.
D
( )33.How did Edward Thomas react to the poem when receiving it?
A.He felt so hurt by it that he went to Arras.
B.He wrote back to criticize its mock sigh.
C.He doubted if anybody could see its fun.
D.He thought it relevant to the situation then.
D
( )34.What did the critic David Orr mean in the last paragraph?
A.Readers were forbidden from reading the poem.
B.Readers didn’t know who to laugh at in the poem.
C.Readers might fail to appreciate the teasing in the poem.
D.Readers couldn’t appreciate the beauty described in the poem.
C
( )35.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Poem Over-Interpreted
B.Friendship Revealed by a Poem
C.Fun of Rereading a Classic Poem
D.The Secret to Understanding a Poem
A
根据第二段中的“...Frost complained to Thomas that he had read the poem to an audience of college students and that it had been ‘taken pretty seriously’”可知,大学生们认为这首诗与一些严肃的事情有关。
根据第三段中的“When Frost sent the poem to Thomas, Thomas initially failed to realize that the poem was about him. Instead, he believed it was a serious reflection on the need for decisive action.”
根据最后一段中的“Thomas warned Frost that most readers would not understand the poem’s playfulness and wrote, ‘I doubt if you can get anybody to see the fun of the thing without showing them and advising them which kind of laugh they are to turn on.’ Edward Thomas was right, and the critic... readerproof.”
根据第二段中的“Actually, Robert Frost wrote The Road Not Taken as a joke for a friend, the poet Edward Thomas.” 故选A。
“I wonder, by my troth, what thou and I did, till we loved?”—Those are the first words of a poem by John Donne. I learned the poem at school and I still know the whole thing today. It’s just one of many poems I’ve stored in my memory, and that I’m ready to recite and relish whenever I please.
It seems that poetry learning has gone out of fashion, but I’m still a fan because it doesn’t just breed a lifelong love of poetry. 36._____ So why not dig out a poem you love and use it to exercise and enrich your recall?
Step 1: Know that poems are designed to stick in your mind. 37._____ See how they leave you with memoryarousing images and how they surprise you by breaking the rules, and control your senses and emotions. These are all great ways to make information more memorable.
B
C
Step 2: 38._____ When you’re learning a poem, try linking the last word of one line to the first word of the next. In John Donne’s poem, one line ends with “see”, and the next starts with “which”, so I pictured a “sea witch”. Making links like these can also help with learning names, and many other kinds of information.
Step 3: Put in a performance. When you’re practising a poem, read it aloud as dramatically and emotionally as you can. 39._____
A
G
Step 4: Enjoy yourself. Learning poems gives your memory a workout, which improves your mood and gets you into good learning habits. So reap the rewards! Have fun putting rhymes into your shopping list, using rhythm to learn names, or “performing” revision notes before an exam.
40._____ And, in the process, you’ll be making your memory stronger for everything.
A.Learn through links since memory relies on connections.
B.It also boosts confidence and builds lasting memory skills.
C.So identify the tricks poets use—rhythm, rhyme and repetition.
E
D.Thus, short poems are good options because they are easily memorized.
E.Follow these steps to appreciate poems and enjoy them wherever you are.
F.Memory experts believe poetry learning can even cultivate an interest in study.
G.Adding gestures and moving around the room can also strengthen your learning.
36.B 根据空前一句“It seems that poetry learning has gone out of fashion, but I’m still a fan because it doesn’t just breed a lifelong love of poetry.”
37.C 根据本段第一句“Know that poems are designed to stick in your mind.”
故选A。
39.G 本段的主题句为第一句“Put in a performance.”, 即付诸表演。
40.E 根据空后一句“And, in the process, you’ll be making your memory stronger for everything.”

directly
固定短语in the beginning of意为“在……开头”。故填the。
故填to show。
故填that。
固定短语distinguish A from B 意为“区分A和B”。故填from。
故填be seen。

Tina was seventeen years old and always wore a bright smile. This may not seem that unusual, except that she suffered from a condition that left her muscles stiff and,for the most part, unmanageable. Because she had trouble speaking, it was this bright smile that reflected her true personality—a great kid. Tina used a walker most of the time to help her through the crowded school hallways. Much of the time, people didn’t
speak to her. Maybe it was because she looked different and the rest of the students didn’t know how to approach her. Tina usually broke the ice with people she met in the halls with a big “Hi”.
One day,the assignment was to memorize three stanzas of the poem “Don’t Quit”. I only made the assignment worth ten points since I figured most of my students wouldn’t do it anyway. When I was in school and a teacher assigned a ten-point homework assignment, I would probably have blown it off myself. So I wasn’t expecting much from today’s teenagers either. Tina was in the class, and I noticed a look on her face that was
different from the normal bright smile. She looked worried. “Don’t worry, Tina,” I thought to myself. “It’s only ten points.”
The day when the assignment came due arrived and as I went through my roster(花名册), my expectations were met, as one by one each student failed to recite the poem.“Sorry, Mr Krause,” was the standard reply. It’s only worth ten points anyway... right? Finally, in frustration and half kidding, I declared that the next person who didn’t recite the poem perfectly had to drop on the floor and give me ten push-ups(俯卧撑).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

To my surprise, Tina was the next.________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She rose from her chair and limped to stand in front of the whole class with the help of her walker. Then she started to recite the poem emotionally, in a rich, sonorous and almost melodious voice. The last stanza, however, seemed a little hard for her.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She stammered for a few seconds, only to utter some fractured sentences. To our surprise, she threw her walker away and did ten pushups, clenching her teeth. Considering her physical disability, I never thought she would take it so seriously. I told Tina she didn’t have to do this for I was just kidding, but she ignored my words.
When she finished, a student asked, “Tina, why did you do that? It’s only worth ten points!”______________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She replied with her familiar, bright smile, “I just want to be a normal person like you.” Everyone lapsed into silence for a while. Because of her disability, some students avoided her deliberately while some were overly concerned about her. It never occurred to us that we needed to treat her equally like a normal girl. On that day, Tina not only got her nine points out of ten, but also won respect and support from her classmates.
