W: Good evening! Our “Person of the Week” is Kevin Olsen.(13) And we’re glad to have Kevin here with us this evening. Kevin lives and works on the coast of Washington. His job is unusual in some ways. Part of his work is to rescue whales, fish, and sea birds when they get into trouble with pollution. Welcome to the programme, Kevin.(13)
M: Glad to be here.
W: What do you do in your job?
M: I spend a lot of my time with sea animals, trying to learn what things they need in the environment. If we know what they need, we can help them survive in the future.
W: Can you tell us something about the disaster a short time ago?
M: The whales, small fish, and birds all suffered in that disaster. The birds had oil on their wings, so they couldn’t fly. And they couldn’t eat the fish because the fish were covered with oil(15). It took a long time for many people to work on the cleanup.
W: Why did you choose this job? Is it because you were concerned about sea animals?
M: Yes, I was always interested in the world of the ocean and how the plants and animals fit together in their system.(16)
W: Thank you,Kevin, for coming and talking to us this evening.
M: My pleasure.

Text 10
Helen Perry, one of the greatest actresses of all time, was born in 1847.(17) Her acting life didn’t actually have a good start because acting was not a suitable job for a young woman at that time. When she was 22, she went on stage.(17) But she found she had other problems. Although her first role was very small, she had great trouble learning the dialogue lines, and, according to her, this was difficult throughout her acting life(18). However, this didn’t prevent her becoming a successful actress. People said the thing
that made her so special was her voice. Unfortunately, her voice got lower and lower when she was in her fifties, which nearly brought her acting life to an end. She finally had a throat operation, which was very important for her and made her go on acting for another 25 years after that.(19) Helen Perry is famous for several famous plays. But few people know her talent for writing. We have the letters she exchanged with a writer and they show she had great writing style.(20) She also had quite a few degrees. But she said what really pleased her was that the audience loved her.

Born in Paris on June 16, 1914, Colette started playing the piano at the age of five. Incredibly, Colette has been at the piano every day since 1921! Even now, over a century on, she still sits at her piano every day to practise for several hours. In the 1930s, Colette studied in the class of Alfred Cortot, one of the foremost piano virtuosos(演奏家) in France at the time. Subsequently, Colette followed a life-long career as a piano teacher and accompanist, with_______________________
one notable exception.
Between the 1930s and 1940s, war spread through Europe and across the globe, changing countless lives dramatically. In this case,Colette was employed as a nurse in a hospital. You might expect this part of her story to be all about loss and sadness but Colette always kept hope in her heart even in the worst adversity.
It perhaps will come as little surprise to hear that Colette is a fan of the Romantic era and especially composers such as Debussy and Schumann. What you might be surprised to hear, though, is that Colette began her career as a recording artist at the late age of 85!Colette’s son often slept
in the room where she kept her piano and for this reason heard his mother playing on a daily basis. Comparing her performances with those he heard on the radio, he was convinced his mother was the equal, if not the superior, of those he heard being broadcast. Several years ago, her son persuaded her to pursue a recording career—aged 85.
In 2021, Colette released her latest and 6th album “Un Siecle avec Debussy”. At the time of writing, Colette is 107 years old, so what does she attribute to her long life? Yoga, three eggs and a glass of wine are part of her daily routine. Without doubt, however, the key ingredient(因素) is her love and passion for the piano. It’s an enduring and comforting relationship.
( )24.What does the underlined part “one notable exception” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.She was once a student of Alfred Cortot.
B.She worked as the medical staff during the war.
C.She started playing the piano at the age of five.
D.She didn’t stop playing the piano in adversity.
B
( )25.Which can best describe Colette?
A.Longlived but ordinary.
B.Hardworking and humorous.
C.Optimistic and devoted.
D.Well-known but modest.
C
( )26.What may be a critical factor in her long life?
A.Regular exercise.
B.An enduring relationship.
C.Nutritious diet.
D.Constant enthusiasm for the piano.
D
( )27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Century of Piano Playing
B.The Oldest Artist
C.A Love of the Romanticism
D.A Musician Without Equal

Humans evolved from apes. This is what we learned in biology class. But what came before apes? Chinese scientists have discovered fossils that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.
According to four articles published in the journal Nature in late September, Chinese researchers found fish fossils that provide the “missing link” about the origin of the jaw, a key trait that 99.8 percent of vertebrate(脊椎动物) species have.
It is the first time for China to publish many studies by one research team in a single issue of the prestigious journal, which stands as a demonstration to the importance of the findings and for China’s global recognition as a powerhouse in paleontology(古生物学), experts said. Zhu Min, a lead researcher of the studies from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily that the findings drew a large amount of interest in the science world due to the importance of jaws in animal evolution.
However, the rise of the jaw had been a mystery due to a lack of sufficient fossil evidence to support that jawed vertebrates lived 450 million years ago.
The latest findings made by Zhu’s team presented a set of five surprisingly well-preserved fish fossils that included three whole-bodied fish, helping scientists paint a more accurate evolutionary picture of the origin of the jaw. The fish fossils were discovered at two sites in Chongqing and Guizhou, whose strata(地层) can date back to the Silurian Period(志留纪) that began around 440 million years ago.
These fossils show that jawed fish were already thriving in the world’s ancient oceans at that time. Later on, more diverse and larger jawed fish evolved and began to spread around the world, paving the way for some fish to eventually go on land and evolve into other animals, including humans.
“These fossils provide an unprecedented opportunity to peek into the ‘dawn of fish’ and help scientists trace many human body structures back to these ancient fish, thus filling some key gaps in the evolutionary history of how fish evolved into humans.” Zhu said.
( )28.What is the significance of the newly discovered fossils?
A.They gave new clues to the origins of fish.
B.They are a newly discovered species of jawed fish.
C.They provided new evidence on human evolution.
D.They defined the time when vertebrate species appeared.
C
( )29.What can we learn about the fish fossils found by Zhu’s team?
A. They were discovered in Chongqing.
B.They include five whole-bodied ancient fish.
C.They can be traced back to the Silurian Period.
D.They proved fish were the earliest vertebrate species.
( )30.What’s the author’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Critical. B.Objective.
C.Supportive. D.Ambiguous.
C
B
( )31.What can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Fish Fossils May Rewrite Evolutionary History
B.Chinese Researchers Made Great Findings
C.A Study on Jaws in Animal Evolution
D.What’s Our Ancestor, Fish or Apes?

28.C 细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“Chinese scientists have discovered fossils that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.(中国科学家发现了可能完善人类如何从鱼类进化而来的进化故事的化石。)”和第二段“According to four articles published in the journal Nature in late September, Chinese researchers found fish fossils that provide the ‘missing link’ about the origin of the jaw, a key trait that 99.8 percent of vertebrate species have.(根据9月下旬发表在《自然》杂志上的四篇文章,中国研究人员发现的鱼化石,填补了颌类起源的‘缺失环节’,这是99.8%的脊椎动物物种都具有的一个关键特征。)”可知,新发现的化石为进一步研究人类的进化提供了证据。故选C。
29.C 细节理解题。根据第五段最后一句“The fish fossils were discovered at two sites in Chongqing and Guizhou, whose strata(地层) can date back to the Silurian Period(志留纪) that began around 440 million years ago.(鱼化石是在重庆和贵州的两地发现的,那里的地层可以追溯到大约4.4亿年前开始的志留纪。)”
This is what we learned in biology class. But what came before apes? Chinese scientists have discovered fossils that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.(人类由类人猿进化而来。这是我们在生物课上学到的。但是在类人猿出现之前呢?中国科学家发现了可能完善人类如何从鱼类进化而来的进化故事的化石。)”可知,文章的主题是鱼化石的发现对研究人类进化的作用。因此A项“Fish Fossils May Rewrite Evolutionary History(鱼化石可能改写进化史)”作文章标题最合适,能概括文章的主要内容。故选A。

Children who suffer trauma(创伤) from abuse or violence early in life show biological signs of aging faster than children who have never experienced adversity, according to the research published by the American Psychological Association. The study examined three different signs of biological aging—early adolescence, cellular aging and changes in brain structure—and found that trauma exposure was associated with all the three.
“Exposure to adversity in childhood is a powerful predictor of health outcomes later in life—not only mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, but also physical health outcomes like cardiovascular disease(心血管病), diabetes and cancer,” said Katie McLaughlin, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at Harvard University and senior author of the study published in the journal Psychological Bulletin. “Our study suggests that experiencing violence can make the body age more quickly at a biological level, which may help to explain that connection.”
Previous research found mixed evidence on whether childhood adversity is always linked to accelerated aging. However, those studies looked at many different types of adversity—abuse, neglect, poverty and more—and at several different measures of biological aging. To distinguish the results, McLaughlin and her colleagues decided to look separately at two categories of adversity: threatrelated adversity, such as abuse or violence, and deprivationrelated(与缺乏有关的) adversity, such as physical or emotional neglect or poverty.
The researchers performed an analysis of almost 80 studies, with more than 116,000 total participants. They found that children who suffered threatrelated trauma such as violence or abuse were more likely to enter adolescence early and also showed signs of accelerated aging on a cellular level—including shortened telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of our strands of DNA that wear down as we age. However, children who experienced poverty or neglect did not show either of those signs of early aging.
In a second analysis McLaughlin and her colleagues systematically reviewed 25 studies with more than 3,253 participants that examined how early-life adversity affects brain development. They found that adversity was associated with reduced cortical(表层) thickness—a sign of aging because the cortex thins as people age.

56.where 考查定语从句。分析句子结构可知,所填词引导定语从句,修饰先行词expedition,关系词在从句中作地点状语,用关系副词where。故填where。
57.the 考查冠词。此处特指上文中提到的探险(expedition),用定冠词the表特指。故填the。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Overcoming Adversity
On the bus headed for the United States from Mexico, I experienced the saddest and longest ride I had ever had. The thoughts of not seeing my friends and family again were taking over my mind and caused a strong sense of depression. As I headed for a place I didn’t want to call home, minutes felt like hours and hours felt like days.
“Welcome to the United States,” the driver said at the immigration checkpoint. The officers repeatedly asked me for my passport, but I didn’t understand a single word coming out of their mouth. After we sorted out all the confusion, we were on our way. With 3 hours left, a new thought took over my mind: stupidity. Not being able to understand a new language was the cause of my feelings. This filled me with a burning rage that I had never felt before.
Not understanding the new language I was introduced to was always a problem that I struggled with alone. In school, I felt like the problems were growing rapidly and I was losing control. The transition from being a straightA student in Mexico to being a straightF student in the United States wasn’t easy and left me wondering if I could ever belong here. I was always known as the weird(怪的) Mexican in the classroom. Making friends was always hard because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人) in the class.
I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem, I had to practise it more. When it came to group assignments, I thought that it was the perfect moment to carry out my plan to hold a conversation with someone else. The moment arrived. I was nervous when it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter(结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. “Hey, my name is Jesse,” I said with a strong Mexican accent. Everyone in the group burst out laughing and the cause of their joy was my strong Mexican accent. This made me want to crawl up into a little ball and start crying in front of everyone.

famous words of Dr Seuss, “You’re off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so... get on your way!” When I finished reading, all I heard was silence. My classmates were in shock, and I realised my words were as clear as they could be.
I was a shy kid and I grew up thinking that I was going to be friendless forever. However, I eventually discovered that making friends and meeting new people was actually pretty easy. Whatever the case might be,
