You think your friends and family may not read your articles. But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for it. Their interest and curiosity grew and the culmination of their interest and curiosity was this past Spring Festival. They would like to spend the Spring Festival with me. It was an inconvenient Monday. I'd never had the Spring Festival when anyone but my father cooked. I took the day off work in a madness of lastminute preparation. I drove 45 minutes out of town to a Cantonese BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck (烤鸭) and watched, fascinated, as it was changed into bite sizes. I shopped at a faraway international market like a madwoman, looking for Chinese vegetables and other food that would be new for my guests. I called my dad, asking for sixsecond pointers on how to make dishes I'd never made. I texted him pictures of the sea fish I picked out, and the red clothing they threw on for luck. In just a few hours, I cooked a dinner of 15 dishes for six friends who cared enough about me and my culture to come over on a cold winter Monday night to celebrate my tradition with me. We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for my culture as well as our food. B.The author's love of Chinese food. C.The author's preparation for dinner. D.The suggestions the author's father gave. C ( )27.What can we say about the author from the text? A.She is living with her father. B.She is a madwoman. C.She is a worldfamous writer. D.She is proud of Chinese culture. 根据第一段第三句“But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for it.(但是当我开始更开放地谈论中国传统和食物时,我了解到他们对此感兴趣,好奇并且真的渴望)”可知,她发现朋友很感兴趣,且这种兴趣在增长,并在春节时达到了顶峰,由此可猜测画线词culmination意为“顶峰”。故选A。 根据第二段第二句“I drove 45 minutes out of town to a Cantonese BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck (烤鸭) and watched, fascinated, as it was changed into bite sizes.(我开了45分钟的车来到镇外的一家广东烧烤店,在那里我买了一整只烤鸭,出神地看着它被变成小块。)” 根据第二段第一句“I took the day off work in a madness of lastminute preparation.” 根据本文最后两句“We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for my culture as well as our food.” D。 C Kwanzaa may be a festival celebrated by millions of African Americans, but it has only been around for a few decades. Introduced to the United States in 1966 as a ceremony to welcome the first harvest to the home, the festival, which takes place from December 26 to January 1, is a celebration of life, unity, family, and culture. Featuring feasts, music and dance, and devotion and recommitment to different principles, the festival was created in the middle of the Black Freedom Movement, at a time when it was felt that cultural grounding was needed. Dr Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University in Long Beach, is responsible for bringing the festival to life. After the Watts violence in L.A., Dr Karenga searched for ways to strengthen the AfricanAmerican community. He paired the practices with traditions of several different harvest celebrations on the African continent, and although it is celebrated around the Christmas period, it perhaps has more similarities to Thanksgiving or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria. There are five common sets of values that are central to the weeklong activities: ingathering, reverence, commemoration, recommitment, and celebration. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, meaning first fruits in Kiswahili, a language spoken in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The first fruit celebrations appear in ancient and modern times in classical African civilizations. These seven principles are known as Umoja, meaning unity; kujichagulia, selfdetermination; ujima, collective work and responsibility; ujamaa, cooperative economics; nia, purpose; kuumba, creativity; and Imani, faith. There are seven candles used during the festival, and like the Jewish Hanukkah, these candles are used to represent the principles. On December 31, participants celebrate with a plentiful meal, often featuring good meals from various African countries. The number of Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa has changed greatly over the years, and with as many as six million getting involved in the 1980s, Kwanzaa became a mainstream holiday. Now, however, numbers have paled, but it still remains an important cultural touchstone(试金石) for many AfricanAmerican communities. ( )28.What activity can be included during the celebration of Kwanzaa? A.Creating a piece of music. B.Having a plentiful meal. C.Giving and receiving gifts. D.Enjoying an art exhibition. B ( )29.How did Dr Karenga bring Kwanzaa to life? A.He started the Watts violence in Los Angeles. B.He created five common sets of values. C.He found ways to practice African traditions. D.He strengthened the unity of neighbors. D ( )30.What can we infer about the celebration of Kwanzaa? A.Kwanzaa is a festival across the world. B.Africans are considered important in the U.S. C.Kwanzaa is an important cultural symbol. D.Kwanzaa is less popular among young Africans. C ( )31.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.A Festival: The Culture Cross the World B.African Americans: An Important Part of Americans C.Principles: The Focus of a Festival D.Kwanzaa: The African Celebration of Unity and Culture D 【文本大意】本文主要介绍了非裔美国人的匡扎节。 根据第二段中“Featuring feasts, music and dance, and devotion and recommitment to different principles, the festival was created in the middle of the Black Freedom Movement, at a time when it was felt that cultural grounding was needed.(这个节日的特色是盛宴、音乐和舞蹈,以及对不同原则的奉献和重新承诺,它诞生于黑人自由运动中期,当时人们认为需要文化基础。)” 根据第三段中“Dr Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University in Long Beach, is responsible for bringing the festival to life. After the Watts violence in L.A., Dr Karenga searched for ways to strengthen the AfricanAmerican community.(加州州立大学长滩分校黑人研究教授兼主席Maulana Karenga博士负责让这个节日变得活跃起来。 所以最好的标题是D项“Kwanzaa: The African Celebration of Unity and Culture(匡扎节:非洲团结和文化的庆典)”。故选D。 D With the growing trend of listening to stories on meditation(冥想) apps, travel tales—sometimes featuring surrounding sounds of places such as rainforests in Borneo—are helping people get restful sleep. Imagine a voice softly telling as listeners close their eyes and snuggle down in their beds. Are you paying attention? Actually, it doesn't matter. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), some 70 million Americans struggle with chronic(慢性的) sleep problems. To help with this, many adults are bringing back bedtime stories through meditation apps. Nearly a third of the Calm's 300 bedtime stories, which have been listened to more than 450 million times, are about travel. Some 45% of the bedtime stories on the app Breethe are travelrelated. Earlier this year, half of the top 10 bedtime stories were travelthemed. Travel bedtime stories are typically an audio retelling of a trip and rely heavily on descriptions, with occasional surrounding noises like ocean waves, train tracks, or soft music. Train stories are particularly popular at bedtime. “You need movement in a bedtime story—if things are static(静止的), it's too dull and the listener will get restless,” says Martha Bayless, a professor at the University of Oregon's Folklore and Public Culture Program. “But the movement has to be nonthreatening and soothing. The train is the perfect vehicle for sleep, engaging the senses in a gentle way.” “One possible reason why travel bedtime stories calm our brains is ‘mirror neurons(镜像神经元)’,” says Rachel Salas, a neurologist at Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep and Wellness. “These brain cells might combine our own experiences with someone else's. For example, a tale of train travel could bring a sense of nostalgia(怀旧) for our own past journeys. The comforting sense of something familiar can help with relaxation and sleep. Additionally, the sound of a train chugging along the tracks serves as a type of white noise that lulls people to sleep,” Salas adds. “In most travel bedtime stories, nothing much happens,” says Bayless. “The bedtime stories are about the quiet period between adventures, which is what sleep is also about.” ( )32.In which aspect do people benefit from travel tales? A.Promoting sleep. B.Inspiring imagination. C.Improving concentration. D.Gaining travel information. A ( )33.What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 mainly indicate(表明)? A.Most adults suffer a lot from a lack of sleep. B.Adequate quality sleep is essential to human health. C.Meditation apps help people reduce stress effectively. D.Travelrelated bedtime stories are more appealing to listeners. D ( )34.What do Rachel Salas's words serve as in Paragraph 4? A.Evidence of the significance of mirror neurons. B.An explanation as to why travel tales help with sleep. C.A description of adventurous travel experiences. D.An analysis of how sleep affects people's memory. ( )35.In which section of a newspaper may this article appear? A.Travel. B.Art. C.Entertainment. D.Science. 根据第一段第一句“With the growing trend of listening to stories on meditation(冥想) apps, travel tales—sometimes featuring surrounding sounds of places such as rainforests in Borneo—are helping people get restful sleep.(随着在冥想应用程序上听故事的趋势不断增长,有时以婆罗洲雨林等地周围的声音为特色的旅行故事正在帮助人们获得宁静的睡眠。)” 故选A。 The Fallas Festival in Spain It is sometimes strange how worldfamous festivals are started. This is especially true for the Fallas Festival.” 37.F 上文“Sometimes they would create funny images of famous people.” 38.E 上文“The Fallas Festival is now one of the most popular festivals in Spain.”指出法雅节是西班牙最受欢迎的节日之一,空处应该承接上文,继续描述法雅节很受欢迎,E项“It also attracts people from all over the world to watch and take part(它也吸引了来自世界各地的人们来观看和参与)”符合语境。 The year I turned fifty, I determined to do something new every single day for a year. We do hope such a meaningful class will be carried out again in the future. Pumpkin(南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85pounder back last year. This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chose by my 14yearold brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time. With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders. My excitement was shortlived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I'm going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can't get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space. One possible version: I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. _______ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ Trapped in the pumpkin, I gulped for air, my throat dry and face burning up. Noticing my mounting fear, Jason proposed calling the fire ___________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _________ department, while others roared with laughter which made my blood boil. In great agony, I let out a loud cry which awakened my dad upstairs. Down dashed my dad who got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so that my mom's hand could reach in and loosen my ponytail(马尾辫). My head was finally released and it was then that I realized my mom had been filming the whole time. That video was posted online the day before ___________________ ______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Halloween. When I logged in my Facebook I found myself dumbfounded(惊呆的) by the abundant likes(大量的点赞) I received from those who had seen my video.
