So in 1996 he invented a windup radio.(18) It doesn't need electricity or batteries. You wind it up by hand. It plays for about an hour. Then, you wind it up again. Today it's produced in South Africa. Apart from that, Baylis invented a mobile telephone that is powered by shoes. The shoes contain a small battery that is powered when you walk. This battery is connected to a mobile phone. These two simple inventions can contribute a lot to the modern communications among all parts of the world. Baylis doesn't have a university degree in engineering. In fact, he left high school before graduation. He just loves making things to help people. He never knows when the creative ideas will come to him. He got the idea of the radio while watching TV. The idea for the telephone came to him in a dream.(20) 1 2 3 4 第二部分:阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Have you ever wished you could speak a foreign language without taking classes? I must admit that trains are not important means of transportation in the US, but I do have some experiences with them. When I was a child, growing up in a small town with very little entertainment, we used to go to the station to watch the passenger trains coming in. There was something exciting about the steaming and roaring of trains coming into view around the mountains, slowly growing larger and louder and finally after their stop crowds of strangers spilling(涌出) onto the platform. I took my first train trip when I was ten years old. I went with my elder sister to visit our cousins six hundred miles away. The train—so loud and violent on the outside—was gentle and rocking inside. We were very excited, and as that was also our first time away from our parents, we felt somewhat frightened too. However, because I had expected so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had watched for so long. As a college student, I used to ride an overnight train to my roommate's hometown. We could never afford a sleeper, so we played cards, sang, ate, read and talked until we finally fell uncomfortably asleep in the straightbacked seats. My idea that trains are romantic may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon, spending extra money to eat in the dining car, and looking out of the window as the desert scenery slid past. Now, when I make a trip, I always fly or drive, and trains are not a very important part of my life. Still, every time I hear the train whistle far away on a quiet night, I can always feel the impulse in my heart to pack my bags and jump on board, entering a unique world of motions, sounds, sights and experiences which I can't have in the dull environment of an airplane. ( )24.Why did the author feel a little disappointed during the first train trip? A.Because the train was loud and violent. B.Because she finally became a passenger. C.Because she had a high expectation. D.Because she missed her parents. C ( )25.What can be inferred from the passage? A.The author's childhood memory of trains was frightening and disappointing. B.The author no longer makes a trip by train now as a result of its dull environment. C.The author didn't fall asleep until she found straightbacked seats with her roommate. D.The author thought trains romantic mainly because of the pleasant moment with her husband. D ( )26.Which word best describes the author's feelings when she hears the train whistle now? A.Eager. B.Embarrassed. C.Romantic. D.Disappointed. A ( )27.Which can be a suitable title for the text? A.My Love of Trains B.Watching Trains Coming in C.My Memory of Trips D.Trains: My Best Choice A 【文本大意】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第三段最后一句“However, because I had expected so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had watched for so long.” 根据最后一段中“Still, every time I hear the train whistle far away on a quiet night, I can always feel the impulse in my heart to pack my bags...which I can't have in the dull environment of an airplane.” 故选A。 A。 C Technology usually distracts us from nature. But now technology is “offering us an opportunity to listen to nonhuman sounds in powerful ways, reviving our connection to the natural world,” wrote professor Karen Bakker in her new book, The Sounds of Life: How Digital Technology Is Bringing Us Closer to the Worlds of Animals and Plants. All around the animal kingdom, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and decipher. Elephants, for example, communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound frequency far below our human hearing range. Corals in the ocean also communicate with each other through sound waves, with one purpose being to attract baby corals to areas where they can successfully grow. This is a shocking fact as corals don't have any ears! Scientists have placed listening devices in these environments to pick up sounds humans are normally unable to detect. After the sounds are recorded, AI is then able to determine their meaning, according to the news website Vox. There are now whole databases of whale songs and honeybee dances. Bakker wrote that one day this information could be turned into “a zoological version of Google Translate”. One animal language Bakker wrote about is that of the elephant. She explained how elephants “have a different signal for honeybees, which are a threat, and a different signal for humans,” in an interview with Vox. “Moreover, they distinguish between threatening humans and nonthreatening humans,” she said. This technology can not only understand the animals, but also communicate back to them. For example, bees use dances to communicate to their peers where to go in search of nectar. A research team in Germany, therefore, fed the bee language AI database system into a robot bee, allowing the robot to create a dance routine that can tell the bees which direction to move, Vox reported. Whereas in the past language creation had been limited to mainly apes, with there being many examples of chimpanzees(黑猩猩) having been taught sign language to communicate with humans, this new technology now allows humans to socialize with different animals throughout the animal kingdom. ( )28.What does the underlined word “decipher” most probably mean in Paragraph 2? A.Understand. B.Hear. C.Produce. D.Record. ( )29.What helps baby coral choose their home? A.Infrasound. B.Sounds within human range of hearing. C.Sounds through its ears. D.Sound waves. A D ( )30.What can we infer from the passage? A.Bees used dances to warn their peers of danger. B.Human fed listening devices into corals to detect them. C.Elephants have different signals for different purposes. D.Elephants can tell whether there are threatening animals around. C ( )31.Why did researchers create the robot bee? A.To collect more bee dances. B.To convey direction to bees. C.To learn the language of bees. D.To help bees search for their friends. 根据画线词上文“All around the animal kingdom, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and”以及下文“Elephants, for example, communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound frequency far below our human hearing range.” 故选A。 根据第二段中“Corals in the ocean also communicate with each other through sound waves, with one purpose being to attract baby corals to areas where they can successfully grow.(海洋中的珊瑚也通过声波相互交流,目的之一是吸引珊瑚宝宝到它们能成功生长的地方。)” 根据倒数第二段中“She explained how elephants ‘have a different signal for honeybees, which are a threat, and a different signal for humans,’ in an interview with Vox. ‘Moreover, they distinguish between threatening humans and nonthreatening humans,’ she said.(在接受Vox采访时,她解释了大象‘对蜜蜂有不同的信号,即蜜蜂是一种威胁,大象对人类有不同的信号’。‘此外,它们还能区分具有威胁性的人类和没有威胁性的人类,’她说。)”可推知,对于不同的目的,大象有不同的信号。故选C。 31.B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“A research team in Germany, therefore, fed the bee language AI database system into a robot bee, allowing the robot to create a dance routine that can tell the bees which direction to move, Vox reported.(因此,据Vox报道,德国的一个研究团 队将蜜蜂语言AI数据库系统输入到一个机器人蜜蜂中,允许机器人创建一个可以告诉蜜蜂向哪个方向移动的舞蹈动作。)” B。 D Pieter Bruegel's iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work showed people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they were. “Nowadays, however, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see that wheat is about kneeheight. The reduced height is essentially a consequence of breeding(培育) along with genes for increasing production to feed a growing population,” biologist De Smet explained. De Smet says wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time. He teamed up with art historian Vergauwen, a friend since childhood, to document such artwork around the world. They have been mainly looking at things where they can spot changes in shape, color and size. Their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum, where they noticed an strangelooking watermelon in an early17thcentury painting. It appeared to be pale and white on the inside. Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea. “No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he painted it like that, that's the way it must have looked like,” he explained. Other paintings revealed that both red and white watermelons were grown during the 17th century.“With all the genetic knowledge we now have, we can look in more detail how something comes about,” De Smet said. “For example, until the 18th century, European strawberries appeared tiny in paintings—they then grew in size as they were crossbred with North American varieties.” Finally, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media. But they caution that the source paintings need to be realistic. Vergauwen reminds, “If you're going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled.” ( )32.What can we learn about the painting The Harvesters? A.It shows how people successfully grew wheat. B.It proves that wheat was much shorter in the past. C.It explains the consequence of different breeding methods. D.It gives clues about how wheat in the 16th century looked like. D ( )33.What inspired the research team to start their study? A.Their preference for food crops. B.Their friendship since childhood. C.Their divided views on an old painting. D.Their shared interest in Hermitage Museum. C ( )34.What can be inferred from Vergauwen's words in the last paragraph? A.Art enthusiasts are not careful enough. B.Picasso's paintings often mislead people. C.The source paintings need to be realistic. D.Picasso's paintings are hard to understand. C ( )35.What is the purpose of the text? A.To comment on historical plant paintings. B.To tell interesting stories behind plant artwork. C.To inform readers of a scientific breakthrough. D.To introduce a study on food crop transformation. 根据第一段中“Pieter Bruegel's iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work showed people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they were.(彼得·勃鲁盖尔1565年的标志性画作《收割者》悬挂在大都会艺术博物馆。研究显示,收割小麦的人几乎和小麦一样高。)”可知,关于《收割者》这幅画,我们能了解到它为16世纪小麦的样子提供了线索。故选D。 33.C 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea. ‘No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he painted it like that, that's the way it must have looked like,’ he explained.(生物学家德·斯迈特认为画家画得不好。但艺术史学家韦高文却有不同的看法。‘不,这是那个时代最好的画家之一。所以如果他把它画成那样,那它肯定就是那样的。’他解释道。)”可推知,他们对一幅古画有不同的看法激发了该研究团队开始他们的研究。故选C。 34.C 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But they caution that the source paintings need to be realistic. Vergauwen reminds, ‘If you're going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled.’” 通读全文并结合第二段中“De Smet says wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time.(德·斯迈特说,小麦只是历史艺术品如何让我们追踪粮食作物随时间变化的一个例子。)”和最后一段中 “Finally, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media.(最终,该团队希望创建一个历史植物艺术品的在线研究数据库。他们通过社交媒体寻求世界各地艺术爱好者的贡献。)”可推知,这篇文章的目的是介绍一项关于粮食作物变化的研究。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It is a big struggle when you encounter problems in school. G.In that way, you will not have to rush into finishing your schoolwork that needs to be done. 36.E 空前一句“Whether it is a personal or academic problem, it can really affect your performance when it comes to your schoolwork and wear down your will.(无论是个人问题还是学业问题,当涉及学业时,它真的会影响你的表现,削弱你的意志。)”提到了一些影响人们学业的问题和挑战;空后一句引出下文具体介绍方法;因此E项“ But always keep in mind that there are ways to overcome these challenges.(但要记住,总 有办法克服这些挑战。)” 37.G 本段的主题句为“Manage your time well.(管理好你的时间。)” 根据空前一句“When to make a decision between hanging out with friends and your schoolwork, make sure that you have set a schedule when meeting up with them.(当你在和朋友出去玩和你的功课之间作决定时,确保你和他们见面时已制订了一个时间表。)”可知,空处应该介绍这样做,即在与朋友见面前制订时间表的好处,因此G项“In that way, you will not have to rush into finishing your schoolwork that needs to be done.(这样,你就不必匆忙完成需要完成的作业了。)” ;根据空后一句“You can also avoid rushing when you have a list of what project you should do first.(当你有一个包含你应该先做什么项目的清单时,你也可以避免匆忙。)”中的“You can also”句式可知,F项“You can make a todo list which can be a big help in doing your schoolwork.(你可以做一个待办事项清单,这对你的学业有很大的帮助。)” 39.B 空处为第四段的段落主题句,根据第二、三、五段的主题句可知,主题句的句式应为祈使句;根据本段中的“Life can make you feel discouraged and lonely but always keep in mind that it will all get better in the end. Being optimistic can help you feel less worried and start looking forward to the future.(生活可能会让你感到沮丧和孤独,但要永远记住,一切都会好起来的。乐观可以帮助你减少担忧,并开始展望未来。)”及全段内容可知,第四段主要介绍要有积极乐观的生活态度,因此B项“Have a positive attitude.(有一个积极的态度。)”符合语境,其中 positive与本段中的optimistic相对应。故选B。 40.D 本段的主题句为“Reward yourself when you have achieved something, whether big or not.(当你取得成就时,无论成就大小,都要奖励自己)”;空前两句“You should reward yourself once in a while for doing well. In that way, you would not feel burned out in studying and doing schoolwork.(你应该偶尔奖励一下自己。这样,你就不会在学习和做作业中感到疲惫。)”说明了要奖励自己的原因,因此D项“This can also be your way of relaxing after all the stress you've met.(这也可以是你在遇到所有压力后放松的方式。)”符合语境,继续介绍要奖励自己的原 因,其中This指的是上文中提到的“You should reward yourself once in a while for doing well.” As a community worker, I came into serious conflict with my community last week, and things completely fell apart between me and my community. I hope you will not miss the concert! Grandpa was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would often visit him on my way home from school. No matter how rotten(不诚实的) I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. And my secrets were safe with him. He always understood and loved me. I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs Ferguson's house. I hit one pitch(投球) just right and... It was a home run(本垒打) that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Mrs Ferguson's kitchen window! We all ran away! On my way home, I felt ashamed of my behavior of running away and wanted to bang my head against a tree a thousand times to make the world just go away—as if punishing myself could undo things. I stopped by Grandpa's house and told him everything. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn't. But he just listened. “I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. “I hate myself for what I did. I really blew it. Is there a way out? Will she call the police?” “Well,” he said, “I bet she hopes you can give her a chance... a chance to be understanding. It's your decision. Are you planning to pretend nothing has happened? To keep quiet and carry your little secret around? To hide what you're not proud of?” “I don't know,”I sighed. “Things might get worse.” “Let's think it through,”he said finally. “If you were Mrs Ferguson, what would you do?” “Well,” I said, taking a deep breath,“one solution is to tell Mrs Ferguson I'm sorry and offer to fix her window.” “If you call her, what's the worst that can happen?” asked Grandpa. I had to think for a moment and then I realized that even if she did not accept my apology, it could not be any worse than seeing the disappointment on Mom's and Dad's faces. One possible version: Grandpa smiled and handed me the phone when he knew I had figured it out. __________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ I took a deep breath and dialed Mrs Ferguson's number. My heart was pounding as the phone rang on the other end. “Hello?” a voice answered. Despite being nervous, I summoned up the courage(鼓起勇气) to sincerely apologize for breaking her window. After a brief pause, her gentle voice replied, ______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ “Thank you for calling, dear. I appreciate your honesty. I know accidents happen.” I let out a sigh of relief and felt tears prick(刺 激) my eyes. Overcome with emotion, I offered to make things right by offering to help her with anything she needed. Mrs Ferguson suggested that I come by her house and help her with the yard work. _________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ I eagerly agreed. For a few weekends, I assisted her in tending to her garden. She not only taught me about different types of plants and flowers, but we also chatted about our lives and families. During that time, I gained a sense of satisfaction from making up for my mistake. This experience taught me a valuable lesson about taking responsibility for my actions and trying to make _______________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ things right. I was grateful to Grandpa. He never forced me to do anything, but always encouraged me to find the best solution by thinking it through. His wisdom and guidance helped me understand the importance of honesty and responsibility. $$
