I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australian’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45 percent of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’ s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.
4. From the underlined sentence in Para.1, we can learn the author ________.
A. seldom went surfing at the sea
B. forgot his experiences about the ocean
C. never went back to his hometown
D. had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay
5. According to the second paragraph, Australian marine life ________.
A. is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually
B. depends on reefs for living greatly
C. may be faced with danger
D. is protected better than that in other oceans
6. The Protect Our Coral Sea activity is intended to ________.
A. contribute to a complete eco-system
B. prevent more marine species being endangered
C. set up a large nature reserve for reefs
D. raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness
7. Angus and the author created a little video to ________.
A. urge more people to take action to protect the marine species
B. inspire more people to explore the secret of the ocean
C. share their childhood experiences about the ocean
D. bring back to people their memories of ocean species

With his study going, Brian Wisenden might be the envy of the world: watching baby fish swimming freely through the clear waters of tropical dry forest in the Costa Rica. By recording their growth and numbers, he hoped to look at their risks of being eaten. Instead, he witnessed something strange. Many groups were increasing in numbers. In these groups, some were smaller than others, suggesting they weren’t siblings. Wisenden had accidentally discovered that the fish, called convict cichlids, adopt each other’s babies. Why would they do that, he wondered?
In the human world, we think of adoption as a selfless act. But in nature, its presence is puzzling. Taking on the burden of bringing up babies with no genetic link would seem to reduce an animal’s chance of survival or at least provide no gain. Yet, adoption is surprisingly common in the natural world.
Take the eastern grey kangaroo. Between 2008 and 2013, Wisenden followed the fates of 326 baby kangaroos in the Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria and recorded 11 cases of pouch (育儿袋) swapping. The circumstances behind some of these adoptions aren’t known, but four were straight swaps and another four occurred after a mother had lost her own baby. How come? Before independence, baby kangaroos go through a period inside and outside their mother’s pouch. Following out-of-pouch attempts, mothers normally sniff (嗅) their young before allowing them back in, but Wisenden’s team suspect that during an emergency they may omit the sniff test, allowing a weak baby to quickly climb in before fleeing from danger.
Some of nature’s adoptions are, actually, driven by young. In burrower bugs (土蝽), for example, females lay a nest of eggs close to those of unrelated bugs. Mother bugs tend their developing eggs before they hatch, and then feed their babies nuts from weedy mint plants. Finding nuts is a competitive business, so not every mother bug gets her fair share. And if the delivery rate isn’t up to standard, clever young may abandon their mothers to join a better-fed group.
The consequences of adoption following mistaken identity can be horrible. The true babies of adopting mothers were abandoned. But it can have remarkable benefits, not just for adoptees but also for adoptive parents.
8. What can we learn about Wisenden’s research about baby fish?
A. It found a new way to protect forests. B. It showed a genetic similarity in fish.
C. It put many rare species at risk. D. It was beyond his expectations.
9. What does the underlined word “omit” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Repeat. B. Skip. C. Follow. D. Take.
10. Why would some burrower bugs abandon their mothers?
A. To seek for better parenting. B. To live in warmer nests.
C. To adapt to competition earlier. D. To reproduce.
11. What may the author most probably talk about next?
A. The processes of accidental adoption. B. The drawbacks of accidental adoption.
C. The advantages of accidental adoption. D. The causes of accidental adoption.

From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blin d passengers this is part of the experience they miss. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Rom a and AedoProject—to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers a way to feel nature’s beauty through their car windows.
The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through, LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they’re seeing.
“As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new chance to visualize and experience traveling,” Federico Russo.-one director of GTBRoma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life.” He believes the technology can be employed not just in cars. “It could be introduced into schools and in stituations for blind people as a tool that could be used in multiple ways.”
The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It’s known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives different passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It’s unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advanced is indeed a kind and influential action.
12. How does the smart car window work?
A. By sorting shaking movements. B. By recording the view with a camera.
C. By translating scenery into vibrations. D. By presenting different shades of colors.
13. What can we know about the technology according to Federico Russø?
A. It will have wide application. B. It will be used in schools first.
C. It will be tested around the world. D. It will understand different languages.
14. What difficulty is Ford facing currently?
A. How to explore their future business model.
B. How the technology is applied to everyday life.
C. How to produce autonomous cars in large numbers.
D. How an autonomous vehicle provides route information.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. AI-based Window Adds Fun to Road Trips
B. Ford Develops a System for the Blind to Drive
C. Smart Window Lets Blin d Passengers Feel Views
D. Technology Makes Blind People’s Trip Enjoyable
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后选项中选出可以填入空自处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Anyone in the world, big or small, fat or thin, black or white, can feel somewhat inferior (自卑) to someone else at times during their lives. _____16_____ But these comments are in no way based on facts. Luckily, there are lots of simple steps you can take to overcome the feeling of inferiority.
Stop wanting to be like others. Inferiority is rooted in the desire to be just like someone else. If you try to be someone else, you aren’t being true to yourself. _____17_____ That means you take some of their traits and put them into yourself. But the important difference is that you are still you.
Try not to worry about what others think Inferiority arises from your constant concern about what others think about you. You often find problems with yourselves based on if others find you good enough. This isn’t healthy thinking.___18___ It is only your own opinions that matter.
_____19_____ People with inferiority spend too much time on that. If you do that, you will come up with a never-ending list of ways people are better than you. However, it’s not fair because everything about your life and circumstances are different — from the family you were born in, to your genetics, to your opportunities.
Build self-confidence. As you work through your inferiority, you need to start building self-confidence. Start by fixing your mental image of yourself. Inferiority is based on false ideas about oneself. Try to remind yourself that this image is false and doesn’t reflect the reality. Remove labels you have attached to yourself. Don’t think of yourself as a stupid, ugly, unsuccessful man, a failure, or anything else. _____20_____
A. Just don’t try to be someone else.
B. But you can get inspired by people.
C. Surround yourself with positive people.
D. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else.
E. Ignore what others might think about you.
F. Avoid using them when you think about yourself.
G. They tell themselves that they aren’t good, pretty or smart enough.

One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold that I didn’t want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him to make sure he would come back inside.
However, another neighborhood dog quickly ran past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him.
Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. “I know I was supposed to walk our dog,” I admitted, “but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Now he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere.”
My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by making some signs. The signs read, “Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away” and she printed our phone number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handed over those signs, “now go post these on all the street posts.”
My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I’d walk her home, but then keep looking for the dog myself.

C. set up a large nature reserve for reefs
D. raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness
7. Angus and the author created a little video to ________.
A. urge more people to take action to protect the marine species

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“Instead, he witnessed something strange. Many groups were increasing in numbers. In these groups, some were smaller than others, suggesting they weren’t siblings.(相反,他目睹了一些奇怪的事情。许多团体的人数在增加。在这些群体中,有些的体型比其他小,这表明他们不是兄弟姐妹。)”可知,Wisenden关于幼鱼的研究,我们可以了解到他发现群体中有的鱼体型比其他的小,所以这是很奇怪的,这出乎他的意料。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段的“Following out-of-pouch attempts, mothers normally sniff (嗅) their young before allowing them back in(在尝试离开育儿袋之后,妈妈通常会在让它们回来之前闻一闻它们的幼崽)”,“during an emergency(在紧急情况下)”和“allowing a weak baby to quickly climb in before fleeing from danger(让一个虚弱的幼崽快速爬进去,然后逃离危险)”可知,妈妈经常在让他们回来前闻一闻它们,但是在紧急情况下,为了让幼崽快速逃离危险,她们可能会跳过闻幼崽那个动作,因此划线词omit的意思是“跳过”,和skip意思相近,故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“And if the delivery rate isn’t up to standard, clever young may abandon their mothers to join a better-fed group.(如果分娩率达不到标准,聪明的年轻昆虫可能会抛弃它们的母亲,加入一个营养更好的群体。)”可知,一些穴居昆虫会抛弃它们的母亲去寻找更好的养育,故选A。

15 Which can be the best title for the text?
A. AI-based Window Adds Fun to Road Trips
B. Ford Develops a System for the Blind to Drive
C. Smart Window Lets Blin d Passengers Feel Views
D. Technology Makes Blind People’s Trip Enjoyable
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后选项中选出可以填入空自处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Anyone in the world, big or small, fat or thin, black or white, can feel somewhat inferior (自卑的) to someone else at times during their lives.
Try not to worry about what others think. Inferiority arises from your constant concern about what others think about you.
【答案】16. G 17. B 18. E 19. D 20. F

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了克服自卑感的方法。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Anyone in the world, big or small, fat or thin, black or white, can feel somewhat inferior (自卑的) to someone else at times during their lives. (世界上的任何人,无论大小、胖瘦、黑人或白人,在他们的一生中都会时不时地感到和别人相比有点自卑)”和下文“But these comments are in no way based on facts. (但这些评论绝不是基于事实)”可知,上文提到任何人都会感到自卑,下文提到有些评论不是基于事实。由此推知,他们会对自己做出一些负面的评价。G项“他们告诉自己他们不够好、不够漂亮或不够聪明”符合题意,下文的these comments就是选项中的they aren’t good, pretty or smart enough。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“If you try to be someone else, you aren’t being true to yourself. (如果你试图成为另一个人,你就没有忠于自己)”和下文“That means you take some of their traits and put them into yourself. But the important difference is that you are still you.(这意味着你把他们的一些特质融入到你自己身上。但最重要的区别是你还是你)”可知,虽然不能成为另一个人,但我们可以学习他们一些有助于自己的特质。B项“但你可以从别人那里得到灵感”符合题意,与上文形成明显的转折关系。故选B。
【18题详解】
根据下文“It is only your own opinions that matter.(只有你自己的看法是重要的)”推知,不用考虑别人对自己看法。E项“忽略别人对你的看法”符合题意,且符合本段主旨“Try not to worry about what others think. (尽量不要担心别人怎么想)”可知。故选E。
【19题详解】
空处为本段主旨句。根据下文“People with inferiority spend too much time on that. If you do that, you will come up with a never-ending list of ways people are better than you. However, it’s not fair because everything about your life and circumstances are different---from the family you were born in, to your genetics, to your opportunities.(自卑的人在这上面花了太多时间。如果你这么做了,你会想出一个永无止境的清单,列出人们比你更好的方式。然而,这是不公平的,因为你的生活和环境各不相同——从你出生的家庭到你的基因,再到你的机会)”可知,本段建议我们不要和别人比较。D项“别再拿自己和别人比了”符合题意,可以作为本段的主旨句。故选D。
【20题详解】
空处位于段末,应承接上文。根据上文“Don’t think of yourself as a stupid, ugly, unsuccessful man, a failure, or anything else. (不要认为自己是一个愚蠢、丑陋、不成功的人、一个失败者或其他任何人)”推知,我们要避免用以上提到的词汇来形容自己。F项“当你想到自己的时候,避免使用它们”符合题意,them指代上文提到的 a stupid, ugly, unsuccessful man, a failure, or anything else。故选F。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
I took my sister home and continued my search alone. Carrying the signs made by my mother, I kept posting them. In the meantime, whenever there were people passing by, I would ask if they had met such a dog. I even knocked from door to door, asking if they had seen it. No luck. Nobody claimed to have spotted our dog. What if I had taken the dog out for a walk? Tears of regret welled up in my eyes. As the darkness fell, I decided to come back home to check if anybody had called.
When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly. There, behind my mother, was our lovely dog looking up at me eagerly. Upon seeing me, it raced towards me. I couldn’t hold my tears. “It just came back by itself,” my mother said gently. Hugging the dog with relief, I apologized to my mother sincerely. “I am sure you have learned your lesson today,” my mother replied in a comforting voice. I played with my sister and the dog again. Despite the freezing weather outside, my heart warmed up. It was on the day that I learned the value of responsibility.
