Last week, we made a survey. Its topic is “Who do you go to when you are in trouble?” Here are the results. 50 percent of the students in my class will go to their classmates or friends because they are of the same age. They can understand each other easily. 30 percent of the students will tell teachers or parents about their problems. Teachers and parents have rich experiences and can offer good advice. Only 20 percent of them solve problems by themselves. How about you? To whom would you like to go when you are in trouble?

Eddie’s father is in hospital. Unluckily, he hurt his leg in a bus accident and needed a small operation. The doctors say that it is not too serious, but he should stay in hospital for at least two weeks. Every day Eddie and his mother visit his father. They bring him a newspaper and some fruit. His father enjoys the visits but wants to go home to be with his family. However, every patient in hospital must be careful after an operation. They need to take their medicine and follow the doctor’s treatment. Some nurses and volunteers in the hospital take good care of him. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Eddie’s father is now feeling happier. He knows he will get well soon!

Good point! I'm talking about only the oldest clothing in your room - the clothes
that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants
and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it
to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need

I lived in a small village. I liked throwing stones because I had no
other boys to play with and I became very skillful. One day a bird flew to
a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and threw it with my best skill. It hit
the bird on the head and it dropped dead
I was sorry the moment I saw it fall off the tree. But it was too late
All that long another bird flew about, and chirped so sadly that it made my heart ache. At this
moment I heard a voice, "Oh, boy, don't throw stones at birds again. The stone can kill the bird
and also hit yourself." an old woman said. She was very kind and friendly, and she told me her
story.
She loved small animals. One morning while she was walking in the park, she found two
weak birds on the grass. She took them home and put them in a small cage: She cared for them
with love and the birds both grew strong. They thanked her with a wonderful song every morning
However something happened one day. She left the door of the cage open. The larger bird flew
from the cage. She thought that it would fly back. As it flew close, she caught it. She was excited
to get it back. Suddenly she felt strange. She opened hands and looked sadly at the dead bird. Her
great love killed'the bird. The other bird was moving around in the cage. She could feel its great
need for freedom. It wanted to fly into the clear and blue sky. At once she took the bird out of the
cage and let i fly away. The bird circled once, twice. She enjoyed watching the bird flying and
singing.

My own shelves are a kind of roadmap through my life. First up

big part of that story is how we arrange(排列) our books, and get on with them. It's such a
personal thing, different from each other. Some want to be with their books in every room, others
have them on shelves, behind glass or simply lining their floors. Each home has a story to tell

It's often said that what we read says something about who we are. The way we fill our

Do you find it hard to learn math and history? A recent study
carried out by scientists from University of London, may be of
help to you. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in
math if they studied in the morning and better grades in history if
they were taught in the afternoon.
The researchers (研究人员) did a study at a secondary schoo
2耳
in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when
teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average (平均) 7 percent higher in
tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students did worst when they were
studying math in the afternoon
In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when
they were taught in the morning. However, it doesn't work for other subjects such as languages
or geography.
Velichka Dimitrova, leader of the study, said the findings show that we do better at different
times of the day.
"In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something that
repeats a lot like problem solving, where we need more speed and attention," Dimitrova told The
Telegraph.
“In the afternoon, it seems that this process slows down. On the other hand, history is bette
suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative(创造性的) and open to discussion," she
said
Subjects such as foreign languages need both memory and repetition (重 复), and they alsc
need people to be creative. This is perhaps why the time of day has no influence (影响) on
learning.
Time-of-day effects (时间效应) such as those are believed to have something to do with
the body clock. This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some
schools in the US and UK have tried out later school starting times for teenagers, whose body
clocks change as they grow into adults
Dimitrova believes schools should take this chance to improve students' performance just by
changing their timetables.
71. According to the study, students taught in the morning do better in
B. English
C. geography
A.math
D. history
72. It is believed that the time-of-day effects have something to do with a student's

SELF
Self-respect is a very important part of a great life. Self-respect is a
RESPECT
feeling of being happy about one's characters, abilities and beliefs.
Developing self-respect means developing self-confidence to deal
with whatever life throws at us. The following are some ways we can
make our self-respect better.
There is great stress from parents, work and society to become a certain person and to
achieve certain goals. A real self-respect is very important and you should believe in your owr
values and remember what is important to you. Everyone needs to follow his or her own path.
Nobody likes criticism (批评). To keep a sense of self-respect, we need to learn how to deal
with criticism. Don't get sad by the things someone else says or does. Maybe it is completely
untrue, so pay no attention to it. If there is some truth, we can use it to develop our characters
Jealousy (嫉妒) of other people's success will cause the loss of our happiness and
self-respect. Jealousy is simply envy(妒忌) of other people's success. The truth is that there will
always be some people more successful than us. The method for lasting self-respect is to be
happy with others' success.
If you have no respect for others, how can you have self-respect? It isn't right to feel better
by putting others down. If we look for good qualities in other people, it is easier to remember the
good qualities in ourselves.
Forgive(原谅) others and yourself. Don't live in the past, but move on from the past
mistakes and difficult situations. If your mind is full of problems in the past, you will always feel
sad. Self-respect comes when we get tolerant
Sometimes we work with the best of motives (动机) only to be sorry for the result. It is the
nature of life that things will not happen as we hoped, but it is a mistake to connect our sense of
self-respect with the achievements.
