My mum keeps a notebook of my grades in every exam. She asks my teachers how I’m doing at school whenever she can. It seems as if my grades are the most important thing in her life. When we’re at home, she keeps pressing me to study all the time. I do as she says, but she is never happy with my grades. Why can’t she leave me alone? I want to take a break once in a while. I want to listen to music or go out with my friends. Is that too much to ask for?

I’m eager for my parents’ love. They’re always busy at work. I hardly ever see them during the week because they do not get home until late at night. I tell them that I’m stressed about schoolwork, but neither of them show any concern. Sometimes I feel quite lonely at home. When was the last time we had a family outing at the weekend? When was the last time we had a long talk? How can parents not care about their children?

Everyone says that youth is a time for adventure, but my parents disagree. I spend most of my spare time at home, because they hardly ever let me go out with my friends. When I do go out, they always ask, “Where are you going?” “Who are you going with?” “What are you going to do?” “When will you be back?” They are always on my back about something.
I understand that they’re trying to protect me from getting hurt. However, just as a baby kangaroo must learn to protect itself when it leaves its mother’s pocket, I will have to learn to protect myself when I grow up. I wish they could be more flexible so that I can make my own choices about what to do in my spare time.

Dear Rebecca,
I understand your feelings. From your email, it sounds like you put a lot of effort into your schoolwork. If your mother doesn’t value that, of course you’re going to be unhappy.
But remember: every parent has high hopes for their children. Your mother wants you to be successful but she probably fails to see how you struggle. Try these pieces of advice and see if they help improve your relationship.
