The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling.
This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia the population is going down by about 100 people every hour!
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. Most young people, especially educated women, have a different idea to children than their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said Linda, a doctor from Russia. “My husband and I both work full-time. We can’t imagine having more than one child.” Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. “I don’t want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said Sally from England. Her opinion is typical(典型的) in Europe.
In Poland(波兰), the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of young people are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even so, the population of those four countries and many other countries in West Europe is also going down.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women can receive nearly $1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child. Austrian women receive $700 a month for three years when they have their first child.
8. How many children does Linda want to have?
A. None. B. One. C. Two. D. Three.
9 What does Sally want to do before she has children?
A. To move to other countries. B. To travel all over the world.
C. To work for at least 10 years. D. To work abroad.
10. Why is the population in many countries going down?
A. Because the young change their lifestyle.
B. Because the young have the same idea with their parents.
C. Because the young want to receive more money from the government.
D. Because the young are leaving to work in other countries.
11. How does the French government encourage people to have larger families?
A. Women can have a long holiday with their families.
B. Women can get more chances to work if they have more children.
C. Women receive $700 a month for three years.
D. Women receive nearly $1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child.
D
If you need to call your parents but your phone is not with you, can you remember their numbers? To remember 11 numbers is not difficult. However, because of the smartphone, many of us are losing this ability.
What’s more, smartphones weaken our skills at giving directions, as well as killing face-to-face communications. Even when friends are having a meal together, it’s common for most to check their phones.
According to a report by Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, an American company, Chinese people spend an average (平均) 170 minutes on their smartphones daily. For students, an addiction to smartphones does no good for studying. Research by Japan’s Education Minustry showed that children can do better in school tests if they spend 30 minutes a day on their phones. But those who play with their phones for more than 4 hours a day perform much worse.
It’s true that the smartphone has made our lives easier. But many also think they spend too much time on it, and this is bad for their study or work. People are trying to change that. A new app called Forest was produced this year. It lets users plant a seed (种子) in a special virtual (虚拟的) forest. The seed grows into a tree over the next 30 minutes unless they leave the app. During the half hour, the users cannot use their phones, or the tree dies. The app is perfect for people who spend too much time on their smartphones. It helps people stop phubbing (低头族).
A restaurant in Los Angeles, US, gives people a 5 percent discount if they don’t check their phones during a meal. Owner Mark Gold says that he hopes it gives people a way to enjoy their meal and actually talk with friends and family in person.
12. Because of the smartphone, people ________.
A. can remember numbers better B. are better at giving direction
C have less face-to-face communication D. like to have meals together with friends
13. According to the research in Japan, ________.
A. Chinese people spend nearly three hours on smartphones daily
B. the more hours students use smartphones, the better they’ll do
C. smartphones make students’ lives and study easier
D. spending too much time on smartphones is bad for students’ study
14. The underlined word “addiction” means ________ in Chinese.
A. 沉溺 B. 关心 C. 利用 D. 浪费
15. The app Forest was produced in order to ________.

B. introduce a new game to people
