There are plenty of mysteries of this planet. One of them that have been explained, however, is the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle is an area between three points in the Atlantic Ocean that create a triangle. It has been said that throughout history, many ships and boats have gone missing there, never to be found again. It was first mentioned by a famous explorer in the 1400s, who said he saw a“great ball of fire”in the ocean. It was again referred to by the famous writer Shakespeare in the 1600s, in one of his books. But it didn’t become a popular story until 1918, when an American ship disappeared in the area with 300 men on board. So why have there been all these reports of missing planes and ships? Luckily, today we know the real answer. First, the area is well-known for stormy waters and bad weather. Second, many inexperienced sailors have gotten lost because of poor sailing equipment and the lack of fuel. And finally, accidents are common in the sea. So, if you are planning to take a boat ride through the area, just make sure to be safe!
A
Looking for a new poetry book to read? I’ve got you! We’re going to explore some of my favorite poetry collections, which range from the traditional all the way to the totally experimental. And though they differ in terms of tone and subject matter, they’ve got all we call “good parts”.
Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong
It is the first poetry collection from Ocean Vuong. Vuong’s style is well-suited to the heavy subjects he pursues, particularly when he reflects on the loss of his father and his experiences as a wartime refugee. There’s a certain wonderful quality to his writing.
Lunch Poems by Frank O’Hara
If you like a conversational style, Lunch Poems might be the poetry book for you. Personal, funny, and easy, the collection perfectly shows the casual voice of Frank O’Hara, an outstanding figure of the New School Movement in late 1950s’ New York. As the name suggests, most of the poems were written during his lunch break at work, bringing a realistic image by the writing.
100 Selected Poems by E.E. Cummings
It’s a shame that more people don’t take EE Cummings seriously. Yes, his poetry is sometimes experimental. Unconcerned with “rules”, Cummings tried to capture emotion in its own form.
The Complete Poems by Elizabeth Bishop
In my opinion, any kind of fantastic poetry books must include Elizabeth Bishop. Highly skilled and highly influential, Bishop was one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century. She mostly worked within traditional forms, but the forms led to surprising effects, mixing classic styles with modern ones.
21. Who enjoys writing in a free way?
A. Ocean Vuong. B. Frank O’Hara.
C. E.E. Cummings. D. Elizabeth Bishop.
22. Which poetry collection may reflect the routine life?
A. Lunch Poems. B. 100 Selected Poems.
C. The Complete Poems. D. Night Sky with Exit Wounds.
23. What does the author think of Elizabeth Bishop’s poetry?
A. It is powerful. B. It is abstract.
C. It is excellent. D. It is surprising.

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, 44-year-old photographer Jody MacDonald has always had a strong interest in the desert. “I have always wanted to spend some time in the Sahara, ” MacDonald said. “There are still so many unexplored areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. So finally I made the journey. “MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train (货运列车) for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. ”The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train, ”said MacDonald.
MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travellers also had to deal with the intense heat, violent winds and even dangerous sandstorms. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour, ”MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up. ”
She dealt with the harsh (恶劣的) conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel, “said MacDonald. Even with all the challenges, the photographer managed to record amazing images of the beautiful but harsh landscapes of Mauritania, and its fascinating cultures and communities.
24. Why did MacDonald tour the Sahara Desert?
A. She grew up in Saudi Arabia.
B. She intended to be a famous woman.
C. She had a strong interest in travelling alone.
D. She was attracted by the unexplored places in it.
25. How did MacDonald feel on the cargo train?
A. Unclean and painful. B. Unique and relaxed.
C. Comfortable and interested. D. Excited and unforgettable.
26. What made MacDonald once decide to give up her journey?
A. The sandpaper on her skin. B. The difficult weather conditions.
C. The dangerous animals. D. The harsh criticism.
27. What does the underlined word “dictates” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Determines. B. Allows. C. Multiplies. D. Postpones.
D 25. A 26. B 27. A

根据第一段中“There are still so many unexplored areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. So finally I made the journey. (撒哈拉沙漠还有很多未开发的地区。这些相对未被探索的地方如今是如此罕见,并且蕴含着探索的基本原理,这吸引了我。所以我终于踏上了旅程。)”可知,撒哈拉沙漠有很多未被探索的地方,这吸引着MacDonald, 所以她要去撒哈拉沙漠旅行。 故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“The train was dirty and uncomfortable(火车既脏又不舒服)”可知,MacDonald感觉火车很脏而且还很不舒服。 故选A。

There was once a time when I wanted to give up.
根据画线单词上文“She dealt with the harsh conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. (为了应对恶劣的环境,她尽量不在中午出门,并戴上头巾以防太阳和风沙侵袭,)”可知,恶劣的天气环境决定了她们的出行时间,结合画线单词上下文““The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel, ‘said MacDonald(MacDonald说:‘天气肯定会……你旅行的时间和地点。’)”可知,画线单词“dictates”意思为“决定”, 故选A。
C
“In high school, I decided to stop eating meat. I love animals. I couldn’t see them suffering.” Babulski says, who is a biologist at Monroe Community College in New York. Teenage Babulski initially lived on starches (淀粉食物) and salads. Eventually she learned to eat a more balanced vegetarian (素食者的) diet. But, Babulski remembers, her mom still wished she’d give up the madness. Mom thought she was going to straight up die.
The decision by Babulski and others to go vegetarian can be threatening to those who view eating animals as typically American. Eating meat is the norm in the United States, even though medical experts have long encouraged people to eat less processed and red meat for health reasons. What is becoming clear is that a meat-heavy diet is also terrible for the planet.
Shifting demand from meat to beans, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts could have many benefits for the climate. A more recent April report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, suggests that the world’s wealthiest individuals could greatly decrease emissions (排放) through lifestyle changes. That’s because households with incomes in the top 10 percent produce roughly 36 to 45 percent of global emissions, while households with incomes in the bottom 50 percent contribute just 13 to 15 percent. Therefore, wealthier individuals, who adopt a low-carbon lifestyle, can help establish new, more sustainable social norms.
Babulski learned about the environmental impacts of meat production. She now shares her personal journey with students in her environmental science course. Many of her students come to realize the power of their individual choices. The little things they do actually do add up and make a difference.
28. Why did Babulski’s mother object to her becoming a vegetarian?
A. She felt threatened. B. She was a meat lover.
C. She misunderstood her. D. She was worried about her health.
29. What do most Americans think of a meat-heavy diet?
A. It is a personal lifestyle. B. It can cause health problems.
C. It is harmful to the environment. D. It is an essential part of their life.
30. Who plays a key role in reducing emissions according to the IPCC’s April report?
A. The factories. B. The government.
C. The low-income families. D. The wealthy people.
31. What is the attitude of most of Babulski’s students towards her diet?
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Uninterested.
D 29. D 30. D 31. B
由文章第一段中的“ Eventually she learned to eat a more balanced vegetarian (素食者的) diet. But, Babulski remembers, her mom still wished she’d give up the madness. Mom thought she was going to straight up die.(最后,她学会了吃更均衡的素食。但是,Babulski记得,她的妈妈仍然希望她放弃这种疯狂。妈妈以为她要死了)”可推知,妈妈反对Babulski成为素食主义者的原因是她担心女儿的健康。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中的“The decision by Babulski and others to go vegetarian can be threatening to those who view eating animals as typically American.(Babulski和其他人成为素食主义者的决定可能会威胁到那些认为吃动物是典型的美国人)”可知,美国人认为偏重肉食的饮食是他们生活的重要组成部分。
根据文章第三段“A more recent April report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, suggests that the world’s wealthiest individuals could greatly decrease emissions through lifestyle changes.(联合国政府间气候变化专门委员会(IPCC)今年4月发布的一份最新报告显示,世界上最富有的人可以通过改变生活方式来大幅减少排放)”和“Therefore, wealthier individuals, who adopt a low-carbon lifestyle, can help establish new, more sustainable social norms.(因此,采取低碳生活方式的富人可以帮助建立新的、更可持续的社会规范)”可知,富人在减少排放方面起着重要作用。
由文章最后一段中的“Many of her students come to realize the power of their individual choices. The little things they do actually do add up and make a difference.(她的许多学生开始意识到他们个人选择的力量。他们做的小事情加起来就会产生影响)”可推知,Babulski的大部分学生对她的饮食持支持态度。故选B。
D
As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin (鳍) soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝) — up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend (趋势), particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing sea life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury (奢侈的) goods has become a war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.
32. Why do people begin to make efforts to protect the declining number of sharks?
A. Sharks are friends of humans.
B. Sharks don’t attack people any more.
C We need sharks to keep a balanced ecosystem.
D. We can’t enjoy the summer ocean waves without sharks.
33. What’s the main reason for killing sharks?
A. Just for fun. B. Just for their fins.
C. For their delicious meat. D. For the restaurants’ development.
34. Who helped California decide to ban the sale and possession of shark fin soup?
A. Wild Aid and other organizations. B. Jackie Chan.
C. Ang Lee. D. Steven Spielberg.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks.
B. Demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.
C. Products coming from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos.
D. The global movement to protect wildlife and stop the trade of wildlife products.
C 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第二段“Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.(然而,我们很高兴看到全球都在努力保护数量不断减少的鲨鱼。世界已经意识到我们需要像鲨鱼这样的物种来保持生态系统的平衡)”可知,人们开始努力保护数量下降的鲨鱼是因为我们需要鲨鱼来维持生态系统的平衡。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins.(几十年来,对鱼翅的需求一直在上升,鲨鱼面临灭绝的威胁——每年有多达1亿只鲨鱼因鱼翅而被杀死)”可知,人们对鱼翅的需求在日益增长,所以猎杀鲨鱼主要是为了得到鱼翅。
根据第四段“In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.(在加州,通过野生救援组织和其他组织的努力,一项禁止销售和持有鱼翅汤的禁令今年已经生效)”可知,野生救援组织和其他组织帮助加州决定禁止销售和持有鱼翅汤。故选A。
根据最后一段“Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing sea life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. 根据段落标题“Go on a wildlife walk.(去进行发现野生动物的散步)”可知,本段建议进行发现野生动物的散步,空前提到“There’s lots of urban wildlife for you to discover, so you can reach out to your city park departments to get some valuable information.(有很多城市野生动物等着你去发现,所以你可以联系你的城市公园部门来获得一些有价值的信息)”说明你可以从市公园部门获取一些有效信息,F项“它们通常提供一些指导性的漫步,帮你享受你所在城市的自然之美”承接上文,符合题意。故F选项中的They指代上文中的“your city park departments”。故选F。
【38题详解】
空格处为段落标题。根据下文“Nothing will make you feel as closely connected with the earth as walking without shoes on grass for a couple of minutes. This very direct connection with nature will make you realize that you’re part of the huge world, helping you to relax and feel calmer.(没有什么能比光着脚在草地上走几分钟更能让你感到与大地紧密相连的了。
根据上文“If you’ve got a balcony (阳台), fill it with pots full of flowers.(如果你有阳台,在阳台上放满鲜花)”意为种植一些花,又因下文的them可知,横线处应该代表种植某种植物,故C选项“你也可以在它上面自己种蔬菜”符合语境,vegetable和flower都是植物。故选C。

Like any other English learner, I met a lot of difficulties in learning English.
First, I found it difficult to understand what I read because most English words have more than one meaning. Besides, it 's hard for me to communicate with foreigners in English freely. But I didn’t lose heart in removing these obstacles. I tackled English vocabulary in two ways. First, I tried to understand and memorize the specific meaning of a word that appeared in the context. Second, I enlarged my vocabulary by learning the dictionary by heart. And I took every chance to practice my spoken English. In this way, I have made rapid progress in English.
As long as the method is right, we can overcome any difficulty in our study.

Liam, a fifth-grader, moved with his mum for a new apartment in a relatively cheaper area of the city after his father’s unexpected death, and began attending a neighbourhood school.
Since he was an introvert (内向的人), the thought of making friends always made him feel nervous, and moving into a new neighbourhood meant he had to face his fears. On his first day, he didn’t talk to anyone or try to make friends, and during the mealtime, he sat at the corner table in the cafeteria and ate his lunch alone. No one in the class stepped forward to welcome him. Instead, they ignored him and refused to sit next to him in class.
The next day, he was sitting alone in the classroom when a boy approached him and asked, “Can I sit next to you?”
“Sure,” Liam smiled.
“I’m Joel. And you? ”
“Liam.”
“Is it your first day today?”
“No, it’s my second day. I recently moved into this neighbourhood.”
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I skipped (逃避) school yesterday, so I thought it was your first day today.”
As days passed, Liam and Joel discovered that they lived on the same street. After school, they often played catch in the nearby park, a game they both loved playing. It only took Liam a few weeks to become best friends with Joel.
One day, Joel skipped school, and Liam had to sit alone in class, wondering why. Feeling worried, he went to ask his class teacher.
“Liam, I’m so sorry, but your best friend got into an accident last night,” the teacher put her hand on Liam’s shoulder. “He lost his parents in the car crash.”
“Oh no!” Liam covered his face with his hands.
Two months later, Joel was allowed to go home after a spinal (脊柱的) surgery. However, he couldn’t walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The day he arrived home with his grandmother, Liam rushed to Joel's house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with Joel’s eyes lit upon seeing Liam. The boys talked to each other for hours before Liam’s mother came to pick him up at night.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ten days later, Liam asked Joel to play catch with him outside and he agreed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again. Moreover, seeing his elderly grandma struggle to push the wheelchair made Liam feel even worse. “Mum, I feel so bad for Joel,” he told his mother at the dinner table later that evening. “I can understand, sweetheart. But you don’t have to feel sad. You can help your friend adjust to his new lifestyle and make him feel better. Pitying him would make him feel worse.” Liam nodded and decided to try his best to help his good friend.
Ten days later, Liam asked Joel to play catch with him outside and he agreed. However, when the boys started playing, Joel was missing most of the catches since he couldn’t run around. Later that night, Liam thought of all the ways he could help Joel and then realized the best option was to buy an electric wheelchair. Liam was thinking hard when he came up with an idea of setting up a charity contest at school to raise funds. To his delight, many teachers, students and their parents took part in the contest. The money in the donation box was enough to buy Joel the latest electric wheelchair. Thanks to it, Liam and Joel continued playing catch and Joel even attended school.

If you like a conversational style Lunch Poems might be the poetry book for you.

A It is a personal lifestyle. B. It can cause health problems.
C. It is harmful to the environment. D. It is an essential part of their life.
30. Who plays a key role in reducing emissions according to the IPCC’s April report?
A. The factories. B. The government.
C. The low-income families. D. The wealthy people.
31. What is the attitude of most of Babulski’s students towards her diet?
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Uninterested.

C. We need sharks to keep a balanced ecosystem.

“I’m Joel And you? ”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again.
