Early growth of the Olympics
Since 776 BC, Olympic winners have been officially recorded in the Olympic lists. This date, which is the earliest verifiable(可证实的)date in the history of Western Civilization, is widely accepted as the official beginning of the ancient Olympic Games.
For the first 13 Olympiads, the only event was the 200meter race. This race took place in a field that was nothing more than a rectangular(长方形的, 矩形的)area of cleared ground. It was around this time that Greek citystates began to organize.Longer foot races were added at the 14th and 15th Games and the pentathlon(五项全能)and wrestling were introduced at the 18th.Around the time of the 19th Olympiad, various improvements were made to Olympia.Large areas of ground were leveled and the playing field was improved. The earlytomid 7th century saw the introduction of new events such as boxing and horse races.
As events, participation, and enthusiasm increased, the games at Olympia drew larger and larger crowds from the Greekspeaking world. The Olympic Games became a link between people of a common blood. It is important to note that only those who could verify(证明,证实)their Greek blood relationship were permitted to participate. This policy was not for the purpose of exclusion(排斥).Instead, the Games were seen as a way of developing friendship among the warring Greek states with the aim of forming a nation.
The ancient Olympic Games affect our daily lives, not just in the form of the modern Olympics. It is amazing that the ancient Greeks, who shared a common ancestry, language, and religion, were never unified as one nation, but the Greek culture produced many great thinkers like Plato and Socrates, and the impact of the Greek culture on art and politics is also great.
