Hi. I’m David House, a British man working for Teens. Here, I team up with readers of your age to help solve your problems.
Q I never had the confidence (信心) to raise my hand and answer teachers’ questions in class. I’m afraid of saying the wrong answer and then my classmates will laugh at me. What should I do?

But if you can show that you’re not bothered (打扰) by it at all, you’ll have the confidence to answer questions and truly get the most out of your learning. Don’t let silliness hold you back!

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes (音量)? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Many young people are at risk of hearing loss because of listening to loud noise for too long WHO said. Listening to music or watching TV shows at loud volumes can harm your hearing.
The United Nations has standards (标准) for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to our inner ear (内耳). Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (检测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
WHO said the “safe level (水平)” for most sounds is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is about the noise of a subway.
15. Which can harm our ears according to the writer?
A. Going to work by subway. B. Watching TV programs.
C. Enjoying a rock concert. D. Staying on a busy road for 15 minutes.
16. How does too much loud noise harm our hearing?
A. It can make hair cells grow too fast. B. It can change the outlook of our ears.
C. It can stop hair cells from detecting sounds. D. It can cause deaths of some of the hair cells.
17. What does the writer try to tell us through this article?
A. Stop watching TV shows. B. Don't listen to music any more.
C. Never listen to loud noise too long. D. We'd better not go to work by subway.

Have you ever heard of a place called Shangri-la? It has been described as an earthly paradise (人间天堂). But is it real? In a way, yes—and it is right here in China.
Shangri-la first showed up in the novel Lost Horizon (《消失的地平线》) in 1933. The book, written by British writer James Hilton, tells the story of a diplomat (外交家) who ends up in Shangri-la after a plane accident in Xinjing’s Kunlun Mountains.
But Shangri-la is not in Xinjiang—rather, it is believed to be in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Although there is no evidence (证据), many people believe Hilton’s description of Shangri-la is from Joseph Rock’s writings. Rock was a botanist (植物学家) who went to these provinces in the 1920s and 1930s. What he saw in China very closely matches Hilton’s description of Shangri-la.
I first heard of Shangri-la in a video game called Far Cry 4. In this game, your character sometimes travels to Shangri-la to fight against demons (恶魔). I think that the game’s creators were possibly inspired (受启发) by both Lost Horizon and Rock’s writings.
I have not been to Yunnan or Sichuan myself, but I’ve been told that the countryside in these provinces is quite beautiful. I hope to travel there myself someday and see the beauty of “Shangri-la” with my own eyes.
18. The writer starts the article by ________.
A. telling a story B. giving opinions C. asking questions D. showing some facts
19. What might be in the novel Lost Horizon?
A. How plants grow and die. B. Amazing experience and natural beauty.
C. Fights between demons and good guys. D. British countryside in 1920s and 1930s.
20. Which of the following is true about Shangri-la?
A. It’s a tourist attraction in Xinjiang. B. The name first appeared in a video game.
C. The name first appeared in Rock’s writings. D. It’s a beautiful place the writer hasn’t been to.
21. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Lost Horizon, a famous book B. Shangri-la, an earthly paradise
C. Far Cry 4, a game you can’t miss bad D. Hilton and Rock, foreigners in China
D
A new kind of friendship
①Most people who use social robots know that they are not real lives. Yet they still talk to or care for robots as if they were. People often give names to their lovely cleaning machines, such as Roomba, and may treat them almost like family pets.
②IRobot, the company that makes Roomba, often gets calls from people whose robots need repairs. The company would offer to send out a brand-new one. Yet most people said, “No, I want my Roomba”. In Japan, some people even hold funerals for AIBO robot dogs after they stop working.
③Clearly, some people are forming (建立) relationships with robots. This can be a problem if one neglects (忽视) his relationships with people and spend more time with a machine. Some people already play video games or look at social media too much. It’s also costly to develop and build social robots. Not everyone can afford (买得起) one.
④But relating to robots can have its benefits (益处). Other people won’t always be available when we need them. The COVID-19 pandemic have taught us how difficult it can be when we can’t be with our loved ones. Social robots might be better than no one.
⑤Robots can’t understand what people are saying or going through, so they can’t empathize (感同身受). But they don’t really have to. People talk to their pets even though the animals don’t really understand their words. The animal may react with a wagging tail (摇尾巴), and that is often enough. Robots play a similar role.
⑥Similarly, robot hugs (拥抱) will never feel the same as actually hugging a loved one. However, these hugs do have some upsides. Asking for a hug from someone, especially someone who’s not a very close friend or family member, we may feel awkward (尴尬). A robot, however, “is just there to help you,” says Block, a robot scientist. It can’t care about you—but it also can’t turn you down.
⑦The same goes for chatting with robots. People with social anxiety (社交焦虑) may not feel comfortable talking to others. Technology, including robots, can help them open up.
⑧“Robots could be like a friend,” Block says, “but also like a toy and like a tool.”
22. What does the underlined word “funeral” mean in Chinese?
A. 婚礼 B. 葬礼 C. 成人礼 D. 庆生宴
23 Paragraph 3 is mainly about the ________.
A. possible trouble caused by robots B. things that people can do with robots
C. benefits of relating to robots D. development and building of social robots
24. What might be the writer’s attitude (态度) towards social robots?
A. B. C. D.
25. Which can best shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

The rich have ships and can make money with them. You are not too poor or too rich, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.”

“Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage (航海) by sea,” I asked her, “When I come back, I will live the life he wants me to.”
Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I won’t, either. It’s dangerous.”
I fought with my parents for another year. Then I went to Hull with a friend and he was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. Without telling my parents, I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.

⑤Robots can’t understand what people are saying or going through so they can’t empathize (感同身受).

The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer (律师). However, I wanted to be a sailor (水手) and go to sea. The rich have ships and can make money with them. You are not too poor or too rich, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.”

Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I won’t, either. It’s dangerous.”
