A
Let’s look at some cost-saving ways to keep your garden watered during the hot months of summer.
The Time of Watering
The best time to water plants is in the morning. This lets the water go deeply into the soil before the weather gets too hot. If you water later in the day, the water will just evaporate (蒸发) from the surface. If you water in the evening, the plants stay too wet overnight. The risk of mold, mildew and fungal diseases increases.
The Ways of Watering
If you water quickly every day, it does not help the roots, which can extend over 30 centimetres into the soil. Water the soil less often, but deeply.
Be careful when watering very dry soil as the water will just run off without getting into the soil. Go slow and make sure the water is absorbing.
Catch and Reuse Water
One way to help keep costs low for watering is to use recycled water. Instead of pouring water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants. Just make sure the water does not have salt in it.
Choose Native Plants
Drought-resistant plants should not be overwatered when trying to keep thirstier plants watered. It is also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants tend to be resistant to drought. They just need regular watering their first two years. After that, they can live on just rainwater except for during times of extreme heat.
Keep Moisture(水分) In
Adding 5 to 8 centimetres of mulch (覆盖物) around the plants can reduce the evaporation of water and reduce weed growth. Make sure the soil is warm before adding the mulch. Create a 7-to-8-centimetre border away from the base of the plants.
1. Which suggestion best reflects the concept of water recycling?
A Keep Moisture In. B. The Time of Watering.
C. Choose Native Plants. D. Catch and Reuse Water.
2. What is the biggest benefits of planting local plants?
A. Reducing weed growth. B. Being watered freely.
C. Tolerance to drought. D. Reducing fungal diseases.
3. Who is the most recommended reader for this article?
A. Gardeners. B. Plant experts.
C. Environmentalists. D. Landscape architects.

Apollo 15 was the first flight to the moon that included a spacewalk. On our return trip to Earth, we needed to recover film canisters (胶卷盒) from the service module. Because it was a new activity, an incredible amount of preparation went into it.
I evaluated the entire plan in terms of safety and results. During our pre-flight analysis we installed a warning tone in the suit in case of low oxygen pressure. Once all this pre-flight work was accomplished, the actual spacewalk was easy and accomplished in a short time. I had the pleasure of being outside the spacecraft for 38 minutes, and here’s how we did it.
We started suiting up an hour or so before the actual spacewalk. I got a little rush as the Command Module was depressurizing because I was then completely dependent on the pressure in the suit to keep me alive. I had practised this procedure many times on Earth, but this was for REAL and I had to do it just right. Once the cabin pressure went to zero, we opened the hatch (舱口) and went out.
What a feeling to be free in deep space! I concentrated on reaching for the handholds as I made my way to the back of the service module so I would not float away. I had a small problem right away. The high-resolution camera was stuck out in its extended position. I reached the canister, put a safety clip (安全扣) on it, attached by a rope to my wrist. and pulled it out of the bay. Turning around again I made my way back to the hatch. So far, a piece of cake. After another two trips, I finished my task.
By turning my head just so I could position myself so that both the Earth and the Moon were in field of vision. I realized that no one in all of history had ever seen this sight before. What an honour it was.
4. What is the purpose of installing a warning tone in the suit?
A. To help recover film canister.
B. To assess the safety of the plan.
C. To improve the quality of the suit.
D. To inform astronauts of low oxygen pressure.
5. Why was the author feel nervous faced with his actual spacewalk?
A. His task was completely new for him. B. He lacked full preparation in advance.
C. He was afraid to make any mistake. D. He suddenly found his suit went wrong.
6. What happened when the author did his task in space?
A. He couldn’t find the canister.
B. He failed to handle the problem himself.
C. He experienced a narrow escape initially.
D. He met with some challenges when doing his task.
7. What does the author feel about his trip to the moon?
A. Tired. B. Confused. C. Proud. D. Safe.
【答案】4 D 5. C 6. D 7. C

Boomerang kids refer to adult children who return to their parents’ homes after moving out. In July 2020, 52% of young adults in the US lived with one or both of their parents — the highest percentage the US has seen since 1940. In the UK, the number of single, 20-to-34-year-olds living with their parents went up by 55% from 2008 to 2017.
There are many reasons for young people to move back home, says Hipplewith, a family expert. The primary reason is the high cost of living. Everything is so expensive. Staying home means financial support from family as they prepare for starting a career. Usually being a boomeranger is just a transitional period. But it still may last many months or even years to enable boomerangers to establish themselves in a career without worrying about things like rents.
For many, a return to home after living away can feel like a regression (倒退) and loss of recently won independence. “For example, you learn to become an adult in university,” says Hipplewith. “You have friends. You can do what you want to do. But now you’re coming back under someone else’s rule.” This can come with anxiety. Still, there are benefits to the boomerangers, say experts. Many of these adults are finding the increased ability to do work they find meaningful, rather than take a job that simply pays the bills. Socially, boomerang kids also have a good opportunity to strengthen relationships with their parents.
In many cultures, moving away from home has traditionally been considered a crucial step in becoming an adult. Now it’s time to change the idea. Adulthood is really just being old enough to take responsibilities; that doesn’t go away if you move in with parents again. Hipplewith hopes that as being a boomeranger becomes more common, young adults will feel less pressure to follow traditional expectations of moving out. He encourages young people to view a return to home as “sane decision-making”.
8. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By analyzing reasons. B. By raising a viewpoint.
C. By telling the difference. D. By presenting a phenomenon.
9. What is the basic cause of young adults’ living at home?
A. To buy something expensive. B. To look after family members.
C. To hunt for the right career easily. D. To reduce economic pressure.
10. Why do young people probably feel anxious about returning home?
A. Because of the limit of keeping in with friends. B. Because of the loss of independence.
C. Because of many years of staying at home. D. Because of the anxiety about the future life.
11. What does the underlined word “sane” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Stupid. B. Rapid. C. Reasonable. D. Independent.
D 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第一段中“In July 2020, 52% of young adults in the US lived with one or both of their parents—the highest percentage the US has seen since 1940. In the UK, the number of single, 20-to-34-year-olds living with their parents went up by 55% from 2008 to 2017. (2020年7月,美国52%的年轻人与父母一方或双方同住,这是美国自1940年以来的最高比例。在英国,从2008年到2017年,20至34岁的单身人士与父母同住的人数增加了55%)”可推知,作者通过呈现英美两国的数据揭示归巢现象,引出话题。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“There are many reasons for young people to move back home, says Hipplewith, a family expert. The primary reason is the high cost of living. (家庭专家Hipplewith说,年轻人搬回家有很多原因。主要原因是生活成本高)”可知,年轻人归巢的主要目的是减轻经济方面的压力。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“For many, a return to home after living away can feel like a regression (倒退) and loss of recently won independence. “For example, you learn to become an adult in university,” says Hipplewith. “You have friends. You can do what you want to do. But now you’re coming back under someone else’s rule.” This can come with anxiety. (对许多人来说,离家在外生活后回到家中,感觉像是一种倒退,失去了最近赢得的独立。“例如,你在大学里学习如何成为一个成年人,”Hipplewith说。“你有朋友。你可以做你想做的事。但现在你又回到了别人的统治之下。”这可能伴随着焦虑)”可知,年轻人可能感到焦虑是因为重返家里这件事让他们失去了独立性,不能随心所欲了。故选B项。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词所在句的上文“Adulthood is really just being old enough to take responsibilities; that doesn’t go away if you move in with parents again. Hipplewith hopes that as being a boomeranger becomes more common, young adults will feel less pressure to follow traditional expectations of moving out.
D
For many, the idea of commuting (通勤) daily to a place of work might sound outdated. In the UK, at least, the shape of the working week is changing, and a new mixed approach is becoming commonplace. This new look seems unavoidable: new technology means tasks traditionally done in the office can be done at home. And there’s the demand for a better work-life balance, too. All of this has been accelerated by the necessary changes brought on by the COVID pandemic.
One obvious change in the UK is that Friday has become the most popular day to work from home. One survey found it’s when just 13% of workers go into the office. It means employees can save on commuting costs and the price of lunches. And Claire McCartney from The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that generally employers thought the shift to mixed working and home working had “increased productivity rather than decreased it”.
Monday is also becoming a “work from home” day: a recent study of mobile phone activity in the UK suggested a typical week in the office now runs from Tuesday to Thursday. This means companies have to think differently about the workspace they provide. Mark Allan, chief executive of property firm LandSec, said, “We certainly believe there are going to be fewer people in offices for the longer term, and we are planning accordingly.” A shorter office week isn’t great news for the city-centre shops, which depend on trade from workers. But suburban and small-town high streets are reporting an increase in footfall as people work and shop locally.
There’s also an emerging trend for a shorter working week. Some companies are experimenting with a four-day working week—but with the same full-time pay. They have tried to make work time more efficient by cutting out unnecessary meetings and having shorter breaks, for example. They claim this has made workers more productive. All this makes you wonder if the act of going to work and doing the nine-to-five will become a thing of the past.
12. Which factor causing changes in traditional commuting idea is NOT mentioned?
A. Effects of the pandemic. B. The application of new technology.
C. The need to improve quality of life. D. The outdated company office conditions.
13. What is the common method of explanation used in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Quoting from others. B. Showing concrete numbers.
C. Comparing the backgrounds. D. Vividly describing the scene.
14. On what days of the week is it suggested most workers now enter the office in England?
A. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. B. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
C. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. D. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Britain’s New Working Week
B. A Universally Popular Friday
C. High Efficiency in Working from Home
D. Different Attitudes Towards Shortening Weekdays
D 13. A 14. D 15. A

All of this has been accelerated by the necessary changes brought on by the COVID pandemic.(这种新趋势似乎无法避免:新技术意味着传统上在办公室完成的工作可以在家完成。
根据文章第二段“And Claire McCartney from The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that generally employers thought the shift to mixed working and home working had “increased productivity rather than decreased it”.(英国特许人事与发展协会的克莱尔•麦卡特尼表示,雇主们普遍认为,混合办公和在家办公的转变“提高了而不是降低了生产率”)”和文章第三段“Mark Allan, chief executive of property firm LandSec, said, “We certainly believe there are going to be fewer people in offices for the longer term, and we are planning accordingly.”(地产公司LandSec的首席执行官马克•艾伦(Mark Allan)表示:“我们当然相信,从长远来看,办公室里的人会越来越少,我们正在进行相应的规划。”)” 故选A。
根据文章第三段“a recent study of mobile phone activity in the UK suggested a typical week in the office now runs from Tuesday to Thursday.(最近一项关于英国手机使用情况的研究表明,现在在办公室工作的典型一周是从周二到周四)”可知,在英国,人们通常在一周的星期二、星期三、星期四上班。

What does it mean to be a hero? I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy. My hero is Mr. Wright, my chorus(合唱队) teacher.
When I was 12 years old, my grandparents passed away. I was really close to them, and losing them was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or think; I felt like I couldn’t even breathe. It was as if my whole world had fallen down from under me, and I fell into this huge hole of depression(抑郁).
Although I was battling depression, I was determined to make my high school years the best of my life. It was difficult to be happy, but I had to try. I joined Women’s Choir. Mr. Wright was the choral director and he was so funny that the first day, I just knew I had made the best decision of my life.
As the year progressed, I loved chorus more and more. I began to smile again and really enjoy life.
Then one day that all changed. My friends —or those that I thought were my friends —started talking about me behind my back. I was hurt, and I sat by myself. Mr. Wright came over and asked what was wrong. The look in his eyes told me that I could trust him. Trying hard to fight back tears, I told him the whole story. When I finished, he nodded and told me, “If you never learn anything from me, learn this: No one is worth stealing your joy.”
注意:

Paragraph 2:
Mr. Wright is a hero to everyone he meets.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What Mr. Wright said really struck a chord in my heart. His words resonated with me in a way that no one else's had before. For so long, I had let the opinions of others dictate my happiness, but Mr. Wright reminded me that my joy was mine to protect. From that day forward, I made a promise to myself. I would no longer allow the negativity of others to bring me down. I focused on surrounding myself with positive influences and chose to distance myself from those who were not supportive.
Mr. Wright is a hero to everyone he meets. Not only did he teach us about music and harmony, but he also taught us about resilience and self-worth. He created an environment where we felt safe to be ourselves and encouraged us to embrace our individuality. Mr. Wright's kindness, compassion, and unwavering support have forever changed my life. He showed me that being a hero is not about having superpowers or saving the world. It's about being there for others, uplifting them, and helping them find their own strength.

During our pre-flight analysis, we installed a warning tone in the suit in case of low oxygen pressure.
7 What does the author feel about his trip to the moon?
A. Tired. B. Confused. C. Proud. D. Safe.

C. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. D. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Britain’s New Working Week
B. A Universally Popular Friday
C. High Efficiency in Working from Home
D. Different Attitudes Towards Shortening Weekdays

What does it mean to be a hero? I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy. My hero is Mr. Wright my chorus(合唱队) teacher.
