B From a Tampa performing arts conservatory comes the story of a blind jazz saxophonist who uses his disability as a teaching tool. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he encourages his students to act on instinct (直觉); to feel the music through their instruments, and not let the waking world deceive them. “Welcome to every day of my life,” says Matthew Weihmuller in his jazz improvisation (即兴演奏) class after turning the lights off. Weihmuller teaches jazz advanced, basic, and improve at the Patel Conservatory in Tampa. When Weihmuller started playing, he needed braille (布莱叶盲文) sheet music, and pieces would take months, even years to learn. As if that weren’t difficult enough, few people in the country were capable of providing braille music, so he started “brailling” his own, with the help of his mom — all the way through college. “They can’t look at their instrument. Now, they have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands, right?” Weihmuller said. “Now, we’ve got to listen to the music. We can’t read it... it forces the students to use their other senses.” Advanced jazz musicians will understand that during improvisational sessions, a musician has to be ready for sudden changes in time signature or key. This is nearly impossible to express through sheet music. At least in this regard, the children are learning in the best way for this unconventional, yet traditional form of jazz music. As an educator with blindness, Weihmuller stresses turning any disadvantage into an advantage, a teaching philosophy that has led some students to tell the man that he has changed the way they look at life. “It’s everything for me, as an educator to hear someone say that you changed their life,” he states. “It’s awe-inspiring and I hope that I can inspire others who are dealing with their situations, disabilities, barriers, and challenges in the same way that I have.” 4. What does the underlined word “deceive” probably mean in the first paragraph? A. Abandon. B. Suspect. C. Mislead. D. Humble. 5. How does Weihmuller teach his students jazz? A. By training them with all the lights off. B. By inspiring them to use multiple senses. C. By getting them involved in improvisation. D. By providing them with braille music sheet. 6. Which of the following can best describe Weihmuller? A. Optimistic and humorous. B. Realistic and easygoing. C. Hardworking and creative. D. Adventurous and tolerant. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The growth process of a blind musician. B. Teaching philosophy of a blind teacher. C. Braille music created by a jazz musician. D. The success of a musician’s improvisation. C One day, a snowstorm blanketed Washington, D. C., the whole city became a white world. When I awoke, I immediately put on my warmest clothes and dashed outside. I wanted to build a snowman. Then I noticed I had audience — a couple with coffee cups in their hands. My face flushed (脸红) with shame as I tried to come up with an answer to their unspoken question: Don’t you have anything better to do? A middle-aged woman playing by herself in the snow is an undoubtedly odd sight, but maybe it shouldn’t be. Modern adults are suffering from excessive physical and emotional stress. We’ve held back our natural play instinct (本能), and that’s causing all kinds of problems — for ourselves, our children, and our planet. Playing suggests that somewhere, deep in our evolutionary history, a playful proto human came up with the concept of stone tools. Even today, the urge to play underlies most of humanity’s greatest inventions, artworks, and scientific breakthroughs. “When I interviewed Nobel Prize winners, I was struck by how most of them didn’t separate work and play. Their labs were their playgrounds,” says Stuart Brown, a play researcher. While object play occasionally results in direct applications, it has a more general benefit as well, says animal behaviorist Marc Bekoff. “Most forms of play are about preparing for the unexpected by expanding your behavioral repertoire (技能).” When animals play by themselves — such as goats jumping around and intentionally landing awkwardly — they learn two lessons: How to recover from missteps and, more generally, how to remain calm when things go sideways. When it comes to humans, as we fully transition to a knowledge-based economy, work and play are beginning to combine again. Some of today’s most successful companies were started by people running small business in their garages. Organizations like these understand the value of encouraging adults to play. In many cases, people aren’t needed for routine, boring tasks any more. “You need passionate people who can invent new things, who can think of new ways of doing things,” Brown says. The next time I’m caught playing, I know exactly what I’ll say: “I am not wasting time or acting immature. I’m playing for the benefit of all humanity. You’re welcome.” 8. Why does the author mention his own experience in the beginning? A. To present a fact. B. To describe a scene. C To clarify a concept. D. To introduce a topic. 9. What can be inferred from the third paragraph? A. Modern adults are free to act on their instincts. B. Play is the driving power behind human progress. C. Humans make scientific breakthroughs by playing. D. Nobel Prize winners often separate work from play. 10 What qualities do companies most need in the knowledge-based economy era? A. Teamwork and honesty. B. Leadership and empathy. C. Innovation and enthusiasm. D. Patience and determination. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Adults should prioritize playtime B. Adults need to make time for play C. Play can expand and correct behavior D. Play is the source of human inventions D Felix, a Swedish food brand, has opened a climate-conscious store that will guide buyers to make informed decisions when purchasing food items. In the newly opened store, items are priced based on their carbon footprints. To help buyers understand the impact of their choices on the environment, products in The Climate Store will be bought using CO2e currency (货币). The store has given each customer a weekly budget of 18.9kg CO2e. This means that customers will have to choose foods carefully, avoiding options with higher carbon footprints in case of blowing their budgets. Pricing foods based on their climate impact shows the difference between plant-based foods and animal-based foods. Many of the foods that we consume are greatly contributing to the pollution of the environment. Although many people would love to make a difference by avoiding such foods, it’s not always clear which items are worse for the planet. Food production is responsible for about one-quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emission (排放). If customers can be aware of the foods that contribute most carbon, they can make decisions that will help reduce these emissions. “It will be exciting to see how customers react to trading with the CO2e currency and see if they manage to stay within their weekly budget,” Thomas Sjöberg, marketing manager for Felix, said. “I think it will be an eye-opener for many to see how certain choices affect what they can afford to get in the same lunch bag.” At the moment, the food industry doesn’t have a standardized approach to calculating carbon figures. The opening of The Climate Store is just one part of the brand’s long-term sustainability plan. Felix intends to bring about comprehensive features that will help its customers make informed choices when purchasing. This fall, the brand will be adding labels to all its products to indicate their impact on the environment. Felix expects such labels to help customers reduce the use of environmentally impactful products and increase the intake of plant-based products. 12. What is special about The Climate Store? A. Its labeled products. B. Its shopping guide. C. Its wide popularity. D. Its trading currency. 13. How are food items priced in The Climate Store? A. By their categories. B. By their production costs. C. By their real worth. D. By their environmental impact. 14. What can be inferred from Sjöberg’s words in paragraph 3? A. Customers’ choices affect their lunch. B. CO2e currency is popular with customers. C. The Climate Store has gained public recognition. D. Thomas runs The Climate Store on a tight budget. 15. What’s the purpose of opening The Climate Store? A. To promote new consuming patterns. B. To stress the benefits of plant-based items. C. To raise people’s environmental awareness. D. To help customers make informed decisions. Taking responsibility for your actions is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and maturity. ____16____ Developing a sense of responsibility not only strengthens your character but also boosts healthier relationships and personal development. We chose that name because he could only see out of one eye. Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: Feed him, teach him tricks and take long walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this active new addition to our family. Everybody, that is, except my mom and me. All my mom saw when she looked at the dog was someone else to clean up after. Messy, muddy, he pounced all over the house. All Mom seemed to care about was getting the house cleaned. Being the youngest in my family had its advantages. I was spoiled or everyone was convinced that I was the cutest. But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles. I was often told what I couldn’t do and why. “You’re too young!” “You’re too little!” “You’ll mess this up!” They’d often say. I also knew that my family loved me. They always tried to protect me, help me and take care of me but I couldn’t wait to show them I could do things by myself. Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could pet One-Eyed, they would shout, “No!” Once, they even convinced me that I had so many bacteria; if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them. Once I even confessed (承认) to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first, my mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized that they were playing a joke on me to keep me away from the dog. My mom scolded my brother and sister, “You’d better stop laughing at this little kid!” Little kid! That’s exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling. I was so mad; I wanted to break something! To prove myself, I decided to give One-Eyed a bath alone. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My mom was pleasantly surprised to see what I had done to One-Eyed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023-2024学年度第二学期5月份质量监测 高二英语 注意事项 考生在答题前请认真阅读本注意事项及各题答题要求: 1. 1.Which place are the speakers going to tomorrow? 6 Which of the following can best describe Weihmuller? A. Optimistic and humorous. B. Realistic and easygoing. C. Hardworking and creative. D. Adventurous and tolerant. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The growth process of a blind musician. B. Teaching philosophy of a blind teacher. C. Braille music created by a jazz musician. D. The success of a musician’s improvisation. C 5. B 6. C 7. 根据上文“Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he encourages his students to act on instinct; to feel the music through their instruments(就像欧比旺·克诺比一样,他鼓励学生凭直觉行事;通过他们的乐器来感受音乐)”可知,他鼓励学生凭直觉行事,即不被现实世界所误导,所以划线词所在的句子意思是:不让现实世界误导他们。 根据文章第二段“Now, they have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands, right?” Weihmuller said. “Now, we’ve got to listen to the music. We can’t read it... it forces the students to use their other senses.”(“他们不能看他们的乐器。现在,他们必须用手指和手来感受乐器,对吧?”Weihmuller说。“现在,我们必须听音乐。我们看不懂……它迫使学生使用其他感官。”)”可知,Weihmuller是通过激发学生的多种感官来教授爵士乐的。故选B。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第二段“When Weihmuller started playing, he needed braille (布莱叶盲文) sheet music, and pieces would take months, even years to learn. As if that weren’t difficult enough, few people in the country were capable of providing braille music, so he started “brailling” his own, with the help of his mom—all the way through college.(当Weihmuller开始学习时,他需要布莱叶盲文乐谱,而学习一首曲子需要花费几个月甚至几年的时间。 根据第一段“From a Tampa performing arts conservatory comes the story of a blind jazz saxophonist who uses his disability as a teaching tool. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he encourages his students to act on instinct (直觉); to feel the music through their instruments, and not let the waking world deceive them. “Welcome to every day of my life,” says Matthew Weihmuller in his jazz improvisation (即兴演奏) class after turning the lights off.(Tampa表演艺术学院讲述了一个盲人爵士萨克斯管演奏家的故事,他利用自己的残疾作为教学工具。 B。 C One day, a snowstorm blanketed Washington, D. When it comes to humans as we fully transition to a knowledge-based economy, work and play are beginning to combine again. C. To clarify a concept. D. To introduce a topic. 9. What can be inferred from the third paragraph? A. Modern adults are free to act on their instincts. B. Play is the driving power behind human progress. C. Humans make scientific breakthroughs by playing. D. Nobel Prize winners often separate work from play. 10. What qualities do companies most need in the knowledge-based economy era? A. Teamwork and honesty. B. Leadership and empathy. C. Innovation and enthusiasm. D. Patience and determination. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Adults should prioritize playtime B. Adults need to make time for play C. Play can expand and correct behavior D. Play is the source of human inventions 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段中“When I awoke, I immediately put on my warmest clothes and dashed outside. I wanted to build a snowman. Then I noticed I had audience — a couple with coffee cups in their hands. My face flushed (脸红) with shame as I tried to come up with an answer to their unspoken question: Don’t you have anything better to do?(当我醒来时,我立即穿上最暖和的衣服,冲到外面。 以及第二段中“A middle-aged woman playing by herself in the snow is an undoubtedly odd sight, but maybe it shouldn’t be. Modern adults are suffering from excessive physical and emotional stress. We’ve held back our natural play instinct (本能), and that’s causing all kinds of problems—for ourselves, our children, and our planet.( 一个中年妇女独自在雪地里玩耍无疑是一个奇怪的景象,但也许这不应该。 根据第三段中“Playing suggests that somewhere, deep in our evolutionary history, a playful proto human came up with the concept of stone tools. Even today, the urge to play underlies most of humanity’s greatest inventions, artworks, and scientific breakthroughs. 根据第五段中“When it comes to humans, as we fully transition to a knowledge-based economy, work and play are beginning to combine again.(就人类而言,随着我们全面过渡到以知识为基础的经济,工作和娱乐开始再次结合起来。)”以及“Organizations like these understand the value of encouraging adults to play. We’ve held back our natural play instinct (本能), and that’s causing all kinds of problems — for ourselves, our children, and our planet.(一个中年妇女独自在雪地里玩耍无疑是一种奇怪的景象,但也许不应该这样。现代成年人承受着过度的身体和精神压力。我们抑制了玩耍的本能,这给我们自己、我们的孩子和我们的星球带来了各种各样的问题。)”以及最后一段“The next time I’m caught playing, I know exactly what I’ll say: “I am not wasting time or acting immature. I’m playing for the benefit of all humanity. You’re welcome.”(下次我被抓到玩耍时,我很清楚我会说什么:‘我不是在浪费时间,也不是在表现得不成熟。我玩耍是为了全人类的利益。不客气。’) ”可知,作者通过自己亲身经历引出主题,主要讲述了成年人需要更多的玩耍时间,因为玩耍可以帮助我们减轻压力,提高创新能力,对人类的进步有着重要的推动作用。B项“Adults need to make time for play(成年人需要腾出时间来玩耍)”能够概括文章主旨,适合作为最佳标题。故选B项。 D Felix, a Swedish food brand, has opened a climate-conscious store that will guide buyers to make informed decisions when purchasing food items. 12. D 13. D 14. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Para1: To prove myself, I decided to give One-Eyed a bath alone. That afternoon, I took the dog and sneaked into the bathroom. “I’m going to give you a bath!” I announced. One-Eyed looked at me strangely, obviously not understanding what I was saying. I took my sister’s shampoo and poured the whole bottle into the bathtub. Then I coaxed the dog in and started scrubbing the dirt off him with our towels. However, things quickly got messy. Soap and water splashed everywhere; bubbles floated like tiny, soapy snowflakes. One- Eyed shook himself vigorously and barked excitedly, soon turning the bathroom into a wet battleground. It should have been my secret mission, but now, it turned into a disaster! Panicking, I ran out to seek help, only to find my mom at the door. Para2: My mom was pleasantly surprised to see what I had done to One-Eyed. I thought my mom would punish me, but she was just standing there and laughing. “Well, well, what do we have here” she chuckled, wiping away tears of laughter. I stammered, admitting everything. Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle hug,” I knew you just want to help. “Straightening up”, she suggested, “Now shall we clean up the mess together, young man ” “Yes, ma’am!” I nodded. Even though we never actually had a conversation about my being the youngest, I think Mom understood I was trying to make my own place in our family. Bathing the dog might not sound like a Declaration of Independence, but for a six-year-old, well, it was my best shot. 词汇激活行为类 ①宣布:announce/declare/make an announcement ②责备:scold/reproach ③结结巴巴地说:stammer/stutter 情绪类 ①兴奋地:excitedly/with excitement ②惊慌:panicking/panic-stricken 【点睛】[高分句型1] One-Eyed looked at me strangely, obviously not understanding what I was saying.
