Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do
her tasks, instead of doing them 1 .
In the village, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds,
2 berries when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “ Well, Amy, I noticed
some fine, ripe blackberries on Mr Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was
welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all you pick for me.”
Amy was 3 about the thought of making some money to help her mom. She
4 ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she thought she would like to
know 5 money she could get if she picked five kilograms. After 6 that she
would get 65 cents, she started to dream big, “Supposing I should pick a dozen
kilograms, how much should I make then?” “Dear me,” she exclaimed, after 7 a
while, “ I should make a dollar and fifty-six cents!”
It took her some time to 8 big, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had
to stay at home until the afternoon. As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket
and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe
blackberries were picked. She could not find half a kilogram to fill her 9 .
Then she thought of 10 her teacher often told her : “Do your task at once; then

Siene is a firefighter in the USA.It isn’t easy to become a firefighter there. Many
people try, but a lot of them fail. Also, in the past firefighting was always a job for
men. Now there are women firefighters.
When Siene was five years old, it was her dream to become a firefighter. Forty
years later, she was the oldest woman to pass a six-week course at the WFPA (女子消
防预备学院). The WFPA trains women in the skills they need to be firefighters. In
fact, Siene now trains firefighters there herself.
Starting the course doesn’t mean you’ll become a firefighter. The course is very

difficult, so not everyone finishes the training. They are trained like being in the army.
Can you hold a heavy piece of woods for four minutes? How many exercises can you
do? Can you lift a 12-meter ladder ?
You also need other skills. Can you lead a team? Are you a skillful driver? Can
you use technology? There are so many more that are a part of firefighting these days.
Of course, no one can do them all, but more skills certainly help.
However, you must wait for a chance to work as a firefighter even before passing
your course. It seems that lots of women aren’t ready to do that. In one year, 50
women got trained, but only three of them are now firefighters. Learning the skills is
not enough to become a firefighter. Like Siene, you also need to stick to your dream.

events in the newspaper and he sometimes went to the library to look for scientific

According to a survey, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25
in the UK is a video blogger or “vlogger” (视频博主). The survey, carried out among
1,000 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number
one choice on a list of ideal jobs.
The reasons for this change are the Internet and social media. They have made it
so much easier to reach everyone around the world, without having to enter an acting
career in the traditional way.
“In years gone by, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios. Now,
anyone with a computer camera can become a star,” a Tesco Mobile spokesperson
said. “These self-made stars record and show their hobbies to their fans. Vloggers are
the big stars of today because they are normal people chatting with their fans about
everyday life.”
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they

don’t notice the fact that only those who are successful get fame and money. For
every success, there are a hundred others who fail. There are the dreams that come
true and the dreams that still stay dreams.
Among those vloggers, some have different opinions. Fame is not what they
really want. They just make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. A young
man called David Leshaw, for example, has his own company called the Finishers
Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. He thinks his
job helps him to show his passion, and at the same time, he learns a lot from it. That’s
enough for him.

survey?
A.40. B.140. C.1000. D.400.
( ) 22.What are the reasons for the change of young people’s dream jobs?
A. Their hobbies. B.The Hollywood studios.
C. The Internet and social media. D.Their families and fans.
( ) 23.Which is the Tesco Mobile spokesperson’s opinion?
A.To be a star is easier than before.
B.It’s unusual that vloggers are the big stars.
C.Hollywood stars are popular all over the world.
D.Vloggers don’t need fans any longer.
( ) 24.What can we learn from this article?
A.What vloggers really want is to get money.
B.Most young people’s dreams are easy to come true.
C.Among all the vloggers, only some can be popular and rich.
D.Vloggers don’t like sharing hobbies.
( ) 25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The author explains the result of a survey.
B. The author tells us why social medias are popular.
