(2024·龙西北高中名校联盟)If you see a young person in their early 20s driving a car in any Western city, you would not normally give them a second glance. However, in Christchurch, a city in New Zealand’s South Island, people do look suspiciously at anyone under 20 in a car. What they are really looking for is a yellow sticker on the car windows. The reason: a new scheme (方案) is targeting car thefts, using a yellow sticker programme.
Half of all car thefts in the quiet city are committed by people under 25, police say, and each year vehicles worth 6.2 million disappear “for good”. Police say that car theft is now so worrying that if a good idea “comes along”, they’ll use it. They say one has. It is called the Under 25 Scheme.
Because of the young age of car thieves in general, police invite owners whose cars are not normally driven by people under 25 to place a yellow triangle on front or back car windows. If police see anyone under 25 driving the car with a yellow triangle sticker on the window, they can stop the car and check the driver.
Police now say it has worked well enough over the last 18 months for them to test it nationally. Robin Scott, a Christchurch crime prevention officer says, “For the 13 months until last October we had 42 fewer cars stolen in Christchurch than the previous year and only eight carrying stickers were stolen.”
Meanwhile, youth advocates in Christchurch feel offended with it. Sam Fisher, a city communications employee, says, “If you divide people up like this, you’re going down the road to asking, ‘Who are the thieves in the community? What is the color of their skin? Where do they live? What’s their gender?’ so you target young black males living in a suburb. That’s the problem you end up with.”
As for the police, the real issues seem to be finding a sponsor to pay for the whole sticker scheme.
4. What does the underlined word “one” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. An idea B. A thief C. A sticker D. A policeman
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why the Under-25 Scheme was introduced. B. How the Under-25 Scheme functions.
C. Who benefits from the Under-25 Scheme. D. What effects the Under-25 Scheme has.
6. What is Sam Fisher’s attitude towards the Under-25 Scheme?
A. Curious B. Optimistic C. Disappointed D. Indifferent
7. What can be inferred about the scheme from the last paragraph?
A. It needs the approval of the government. B. It needs extra funds.
C. It remains under discussion. D. It has covered the whole nation.

(2024·山东高中名校)Ever wondered how many steps you should really be aiming for each day to stay healthy? A study, led by the University of Granada (UGR) and published in one of the world’s leading journals, identifies for the first time the number of steps at which most people obtain the greatest benefits.
The study has provided the first scientific proof for daily step count to significantly reduce the risk of premature death: 8,000. It contradicts the popular belief that one should aim for 10,000 steps a day—an idea that came out of Japan in the 1960s but had no basis in science. “We have shown that the more steps you take, the better, and that there is no extra number of steps that has been proven to be harmful to health,” explains Francisco B. Ortega, the lead author of the study.
The findings are based on a comprehensive analysis of data from twelve international studies involving over 110,000 participants. The study reveals that even small increases in the daily step count can lead to measurable health benefits. For those who lead a less active lifestyle, an additional 500 steps can already result in health improvements. “This is good news because not everyone can walk almost 9,000 steps a day, at least not at first, so you can set small, reachable goals and gradually make progress and increase the number of steps per day,” the researchers suggests.
So, should we stop walking when we reach 9000 steps? “Absolutely not,” insists Ortega. “More steps are never bad. Our study showed that even as many as 16,000 steps a day does not pose a risk.” However, they also note that the daily step target should be age-appropriate.
“Our study gives people clear and easily measurable goals,” Ortega concludes. “Counting steps is much simpler, especially since most people have a smartphone or smartwatch these days. The significance of our study lies in providing concrete and measurable targets for the number of daily steps and thereby contributing to people’s health.”
8. What can we learn about the new study?
A. It originates from Japan.
B. It has reduced death rate.
C. It has scientific evidence.
D. It restricts extra daily steps.
9. What does the underlined word “premature” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Early. B. Unexpected. C. Delayed. D. Sudden.
10. What do researchers advise inactive individuals to do?
A. Increase walking pace.
B. Set achievable step goals.
C. Track progress every day.
D. Add other forms of exercise.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pace vs Count: Walking Matters
B. Impact of Walking 16,000 Steps
C. Counting with Smart Wearables
D. 8000 vs 10,000: Mystery solved

(2024·新高中创新联盟 TOP 二十名校)Researchers propose that governments apply a new approach for calculating the benefits that arise from conserving biodiversity and nature for future generations. The approach can be used by governments in cost-benefit analyses for public infrastructure(基础设施) projects, in which spaces for animal and plant species and ecosystem services are converted into the current monetary value, such as the recreational(娱乐的) value.
This process of the new method is designed to make biodiversity loss and the benefits of nature conservation more visible in political decision-making. However, the international research team say current methods for calculating the values of ecosystem services fall short and have designed the new approach, which they believe could easily be employed in treasury analysis supporting future budget statements.
Their approach, published in the journal Science, takes into consideration the increase in monetary value of nature over time as human income increases, as well as the likely decline in biodiversity, making it more of a scarce(稀缺的) resource. This contrasts with current methods, which do not consider how the value of ecosystem services changes over time.
Two factors play a key role in this value adjustment: On the one hand, as incomes go up, people are willing to pay more to conserve nature. On the other hand, the services provided by ecosystems will become more valuable when they become scarcer.
"The fact that scarce goods become more expensive is a fundamental principle in economics, and it also applies here. And in view of current developments, unfortunately, we must expect the loss of biodiversity to continue," said Moritz Drupp, Professor of Sustainability Economics at the University of Hamburg and lead author of this study.
12. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "converted" in paragraph 1?
A. Broken. B. Thrown. C. Knocked. D. Changed.
13. What can we learn about current methods for calculating the value of ecosystem services?
A. They are incorrect. B. They cost little.
C. They are easy to use. D. They need improving.
14. What motivates people to care more about protecting nature according to the text?
A. Climate change. B. Income rise.
C. Population increase. D. Government support.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new way to calculate the value of protecting nature.
B. Important measures to promote economic development.
C. The government's determination to protect plants and animals.
D. The importance of university education for nature conservation.

Strategies to Overcome Self-Doubt Once and For All
Being self-confident is not easy and not everyone can do it, but it doesn’t need to be that difficult. 16
Going through life can be very challenging at times. When we were young, no one told us how hard it will be in the future but here we are. 17 And it is unpleasing and can kill your confidence levels if not controlled from the beginning.
We will all experience some self-doubt, which is natural. 18 It happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start a new job, a new task, or a new relationship, anything new in life will make you self-doubt. This sort of feeling puts you into dark days when nothing seems to go right and you might feel like giving up, and that is the time to be strong.
19 Self-doubt is when you are unsure about one or more aspects of yourself. For example, when starting a new job, you might feel inexperienced or might think that you are not fit enough for the job, and this is a prime example of self-doubt.
20 Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you. It motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday. This type of feeling will push you to work harder and faster than before and will also increase your productivity, but it should be a low level of self-criticism. You don’t want to punish yourself over things that are beyond your control.
A. We needn’t take it seriously.
B. It’s impossible for us to deal with it.
C. One of the big problems of adult life is having self-doubt.
D. Self-doubt isn’t all that bad, let us tell you why.
E. Let’s explore to find ways to remove self-doubt forever.
F. It will take long for us to solve this problem.
G. There are some people mistaking self-doubt for something else.

They were like brothers.
Whenever Christ was challenged with those difficult courses, David was always there to help Christ. Christ showed his thanks to David from the bottom of his heart, saying, “Without your help, I couldn't get on well with my studies. I really don't know how to repay your help.” David responded, “We are good friends. It's natural for us to help each other.”
It was the early morning of Saturday. David had a fever and couldn't get out of bed. Christ took good are of him. He cooked David some soup and then gave him some medicine. He thought a sound sleep would help David get better. David felt comforted with the care of his friend. Then he fell asleep.

根据划线词上文“Police say that car theft is now so worrying that if a good idea “comes along”, they’ll use it.(警方表示,现在汽车盗窃是如此令人担忧,以至于如果有好主意“出现”,他们就会使用它)”以及后文“It is called the Under 25 Scheme.(它被称为Under 25 Scheme)”可知,如今有了一个预防汽车盗窃的想法,那就是Under 25 Scheme。 故选A。
根据第三段“Because of the young age of car thieves in general, police invite owners whose cars are not normally driven by people under 25 to place a yellow triangle on front or back car windows. If police see anyone under 25 driving the car with a yellow triangle sticker on the window, they can stop the car and check the driver.(由于偷车贼一般都很年轻,警方会邀请那些通常不被25岁以下的人驾驶的车主在前车窗或后车窗上贴一个黄色三角形。如果警察看到25岁以下的人驾驶窗户上贴着黄色三角形贴纸的汽车,他们可以停车并检查司机)”可知,第三段主要讲了Under-25 Scheme如何运作。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Sam Fisher, a city communications employee, says, “If you divide people up like this, you’re going down the road to asking, ‘Who are the thieves in the community? What is the color of their skin? Where do they live? What’s their gender?’ so you target young black males living in a suburb.
【答案】12.D 13.D 14.B 15.A
根据画线词前“The approach can be used by governments in cost-benefit analyses for public infrastructure(基础设施) projects, in which spaces for animal and plant species and ecosystem services”及画线词后“into the current mon etary value, such as the recreational(娱乐的) value.”
根据第二段“However, the international research team say current methods for calculating the values of ecosystem services fall short...”及第三段“... current methods, which do not consider...”
根据第四段“…as incomes go up, people are willing to pay more to conserve nature.”

Being self-confident is not easy and not everyone can do it, but it doesn’t need to be that difficult. Strategies to Overcome Self-Doubt Once and For All“彻底战胜自我怀疑的策略”,故此处要填 E. Let’s explore to find vays to remove self-doubt forever.“让我们一起探索永远消除自我怀疑的方法”。
When we were young, no one told us how hard it will be in the future but here we are. C. One of the big problems of adult life is having self-doubt。
We will all experience some self-doubt, which is natural A. We needn’t take it seriously“我们没必要把它当回事儿”,后一句也是对答案的进一步说明。
G. There are some people mistaking self-doubt for something else“有些人把自我怀疑错当成了别的东西”,所以,后面一句以“什么是真正的自我怀疑”来对此给予驳斥。
D.Self-doubt isn’t all that bad, let us tell you why“自我怀疑并不是那么糟糕,让我们来告诉你为什么”。

Dear Simon,
I am sorry to let you know that your application to the School Painting club was rejected. Personally, I would like to recommend a Chinese calligraphy club to you. And my reasons are as follows.
To start, in our nation, calligraphy has always been considered as one of the most significant arts, which will help foreigners to know more about Chinese culture. Second, unlike doing Tai chi which needs a big space and specific costumes, practicing calligraphy can be easy to operate. All it asks is a table with the Four Treasures of the Study, which refer to brush, ink stick, paper and ink stone. Finally, practicing calligraphy is a good way to improve students’ perseverance, for it needs patience to practice.
In a word, starting a calligraphy club is definitely advantageous. And I highly recommend starting a calligraphy club.
Yours,

David's parents left him forever in a car accident. He was brought up by his dear grandma, who was now in her eighties and in poor health. David was so excellent at his studies that he was admitted into his ideal college. He developed friendship with Christ when they were seated next to each other on the first college day.
David didn't know how long it had been before he woke up. He saw some food which was newly cooked on the table and there was also a note, which read, “Take the food and you will get better. I need to be away for several days. Take good care of yourself. Christ.” He didn't detail David about what he was going to do. Later someone told David that Christ bought a bus ticket to David's hometown. David felt confused. But he thought that maybe Christ had something personal to attend lo and it was not suitable to tell him.
On Monday, David got better and went to classes. Obviously, Christ was not there. He missed the classes.

In the evening, Christ came back and meanwhile David received a call from his grandma | whether Christ had returned to the college safely.
On learning about this, David suddenly realized the truth.
In the evening, Christ came back and meanwhile David received a call from his grandma, requesting whether Christ had returned to the college safely. Surprised, David asked why she mentioned Christ. It turned out that when she called David last Saturday, he was sleeping and failed to receive her call. Then she called Christ. Knowing she fell ill, Christ went over to take her to see a doctor. Christ did not tell David about her condition. That's because she asked Christ to do so. She did not want David to worry about her. Christ looked after her until she got well.
On learning about this, David suddenly realized the truth. The fact is that Christ took the bus to David's hometown to look after David's sick grandmother without telling David. Deeply moved, David hurried to Christ's room and expressed his sincere gratitude for taking care of his grandma while he was ill. David said he was willing to repay what Christ had done for him. Then, David treated Christ to a big dinner and helped Christ to make up for the classes he had missed. The friendship between the two brothers became stronger.
