Do you love animals? Do you have a friendly dog or cat? Do you have time to help us? Then PAT-A-PET wants to hear from you!
PAT-A-PET is a charity. We provide visits to hospitals, schools and old people's homes,by volunteers with their own friendly dogs or cats. Many older and disabled people feel lonely and sad. A lot of older people once owned pets but had to give them up because they could not look after them. They tell us that they miss their pets. A visit from one of our pets can make people smile. Workers in the homes, schools and hospitals say that our pets make a big difference. They bring happiness into the lives of sick and disabled people.
Since its beginning, over 18,000 pets and their owners have volunteered with PAT-A-PET. All our pets are well-behaved and have good tempers. They love people and are good with children.Today there are 3,500 PAT-A-PET dogs and cats at work in the UK. Every week these friendly dogs and cats give more than 10,000 people the chance to pat a pet. But we need more!
PAT-A-PET is looking for new pets and volunteer owners to provide this service. We are also looking for people who can help us raise money for PAT-A-PET. PAT-A-PET Club encourages children and young people to get involved and learn about our work in a fun way.
If you want to know more about our work, please contact us at: PAT-A-PET Pet House

Touching the Void is a book by Joe Simpson, the mountaineer. It tells the story of how Simpson and another mountaineer, Simon Yates, almost died trying to climb the 6344-metre Siula Grande Mountain(斯拉格兰山)in the Andes(安第斯山脉)in 1985. In 2003 the book became an award-winning film.
Yates and Simpson reached the top of the mountain and became the first people to climb the Siula Grande by the west face. But a disaster happened on the way down. Simpson fell and broke his leg. The men were running out of water and needed to get back to their camp, about 900 metres below,to get treatment for Simpson.
Yates tried to help Simpson to climb down the mountain. He started to lower him down the mountain on a rope. But the rope tangled and Simpson was hanging in the mid-air. Yates couldn't see or hear Simpson, but he could feel himself being pulled down the mountain. He tried to stop himself slipping. He held on fo an hour but finally decided that Simpson must be dead. So he cut the rope, to stop himself from being pulled over the edge, and let Simpson fall.
In fact, Simpson was not dead. He fell another 100 feet and landed on a bridge of ice. From there he crawled for three days, without food or water, until he reached the camp.Yates was shocked that he had almost killed his friend, but Simpson said he would have done exactly the same thing!
