An American man may have a way to help these
kids—a pair of shoes that grow with the child.Kenton
Lee is the inventor of the shoes. He said,“The shoes
grow in three places: in the front, on the side with Velcro
and on the back with a buckle(扣).They can last up to
five years. The bottom is rubber. The top is just leather(皮
革).” The shoes come in two sizes. The small ones are for
children aged 4 to 9 and the large ones are for children
aged 9 to 14.
15
Lee said he got the idea for the shoes while working
as a volunteer in Kenya. He said, “There was a little girl
in a white dress walking next to me.And I just
remembered looking down and seeing how small her
shoes were. They were so small that she had to cut the
front of her shoes to let her toes reach out.And I thought
it would be brilliant to make a pair of shoes that could
grow with her feet. In this way, kids will be happy to
wear and parents needn't spend much money on them.”
16
However, it was not easy for Lee to turn his idea into
a real thing.
Finally, in 2009,Lee created a non-profit(非盈利
的) organization called Because International. In the
office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his
own shoes so that he can remember his promise. He said,
“I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea
came true. So those are the shoes that I wore for over five
years.”
17
Because International works with several other
organizations.Together, they have sent more than 50,000
pairs of shoes to 70 countries.
