Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.
Her poems described conditions in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.
In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago, where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions of the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen. Annie Allen is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms. Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.
Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.
In some of her poems Gwendolyn Brooks described what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curing Sky.
By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks’ poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.

A.The life of Gwendolyn Brooks. B.The poems of Gwendolyn Brooks.
C.The struggles of black women. D.The understanding about black culture.
25.What can we learn about Gwendolyn Brooks from the second paragraph?

Addiction to watching seven episodes of Real Housewives or “wasting” the afternoon watching back-to-back classic baseball games isn’t going to melt our brains. In fact, studies suggest that “playing a video game or watching a movie or television show can restore some psychological resources,” says Robin Nabi, PhD, a professor of communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who specializes in the effects of media on emotions.
Though the benefits have yet to be studied long-term and our problems don’t magically disappear once we turn off the tube, rest can reduce stress levels. Giving ourselves permission to enjoy some downtime is also a key part of self-sympathy, which helps prevent anxiety and depression.
“We don’t focus as much on relaxation and playing and enjoyment and fun, and these are such important aspects of being a human being,” says Nabi. “And feeling guilty about activities we enjoy, or criticizing them, can detract (损害) from the benefits they offer us.”
Therefore, it’s time to embrace our need for pleasure. One big reason to do so is that talking about our common interests and pursuits, whatever they may be, is a way to connect with others. The most important value of a guilty pleasure might just be the bond it can create between people who share it. You’ll never find those connections if you don’t speak up. So stop apologizing. You might just find that it reduces any remaining guilt and makes it easier to discover more things you enjoy.
“Lots of the time, guilty pleasures get talked about in terms of genre (类型),” says Nabi. But it can help to think about what you like specifically, she points out. “You probably don’t like all boy bands, so what is it about this particular group and their music? Whatever it is, find your little niche and go for that. And don’t be ashamed of what that is, because clearly it’s doing something for you.”
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A.By listing examples.
B.By giving definitions.
C.By making a contrast.
D.By providing background information.
29.What does Nabi think of people’s guilty feeling about pleasure?
A.It is normal. B.It is beneficial.
C.It is confusing. D.It is unnecessary.
30.What does the underlined word “niche” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.A job someone is responsible for.
B.An activity suitable for someone.
C.A pleasure bringing someone guilt.
D.A small case someone cares little about.
31.Which of following opinions would the author agree with?
A.Don’t be addicted to entertainment.
B.Develop new hobbies to reduce pressure.
C.View our demand for pleasure positively.
D.Stay away from guilty pleasures.
D
Although women now earn more degrees than men, all is not well with them. Women undergraduates are just as likely as men to have a drinking problem. And they are more likely to have anxiety disorders and to be clinically depressed.
After 46 years of college teaching, I still give colleges an “F” factor—a factor that plays a major role in female students’ well-being: fathers. As documented in my research over the past 30 years, daughters who have strong, supportive relationships with their fathers generally earn better grades, have higher college graduation rates and enter more STEM professions. These daughters are also more emotionally resilient (恢复快的) and self-confident.
Moreover, well-fathered women reap these benefits regardless of their family’s income. It is worth noting that students from wealthier families do not have better relationships with their parents than students from less well-off families.
Then, too, college-educated parents are the most likely to spoil their children—especially their daughters, leaving them becoming the fragile “snowflake” students who melt too easily under stress and rely too often on their parents or college personnel to solve their problems. For decades, however, the research has shown that fathers are less likely than mothers to be overly protective “helicopter” parents who go overboard trying to make life’s path as stress-free as possible for children. So how can colleges and universities improve their grades on the “F” factor?
First, the curriculum needs to be more inclusive and less prejudiced against fathers. For example, social science textbooks and academic journals devote far more attention to mothers than to fathers. A less sexist, more balanced curriculum would help remove the myths that work against strong father-daughter bonds. Second, colleges can make the faculty more aware of how their female students’ relationships with their fathers affect their academic performance and mental health. Third, colleges can create more events specifically for fathers and can be more sensitive to fathers’ needs.
Supporting the “father factor” in these ways can give women students’ mental health a much-needed boost. And it can also offer professors and staff members another valuable resource to help deal with the challenges that might lie ahead.
32.What do we know about well-fathered female students?
A.They don’t have a drinking problem. B.They gain advantages in various aspects.
C.They usually come from wealthier families. D.They are more likely to have anxiety disorders.
33.What does the author think of “helicopter” parents?
A.They are definitely college graduates. B.They are mostly overly protective fathers.
C.They are seeking for a stress-free life’s path. D.They are responsible for the “snowflake” children.
34.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Measures that colleges can take. B.Challenges that colleges may face.
C.Suggestions that fathers should follow. D.Benefits that college education will bring.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Colleges Get an “F” Factor B.Colleges Are to Blame for Prejudice
C.Strong Father-daughter Bonds Matter D.Fathers Are Best Teachers for Children

Four Ways to Beat the Monday Blues
Are you feeling down because the weekend is almost over? Take it easy, and you can try the following ways to help you overcome the Monday Blues.
Make a list for your next week.
Instead of focusing on difficult tasks that lay ahead of you, think about all the good to come. 36 A good place to start is to think of one thing you are excited about for each category: at work, after work, and at the weekend. If it’s hard to come up with three things to look forward to, get planning ASAP! We’re not talking about anything difficult, just simple things that uplift you like meeting a friend for coffee.
37
Sleep has a tremendous effect on our mood. According to Harvard Medical School, “poor or inadequate sleep can cause stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being.” So, if you find yourself a little more short-tempered than normal, sleep may be the answer. 38 It’s worth taking this into account on Sunday to avoid a lack of energy on a Monday morning.
Choose your favorite clothes.
39 In fact, psychologists conclude that the strong link between clothing and mood suggests we should put on clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low. In short, wearing whatever you like on Monday makes you feel great!
Arrange some easy tasks.
After a weekend of fun and taking it easy, it might be best to keep Monday’s schedule a little lighter than other days. This doesn’t mean sitting around and drowning in your blues. It means that instead of facing the most complicated stuff on a Monday, put some time into the easier tasks. 40
A.Form a routine of daily life.
B.Go to bed early on Sunday night.
C.Don’t underestimate the power of a suit.
D.Reduce Monday Blues by allowing yourself to do Monday with ease.
E.Putting less pressure on yourself is a good way to beat the Monday Blues.
F.Take a nap to energize or get to bed earlier tonight to make up for lost sleep.
G.Make a list by writing out some things that you are currently looking forward to.

It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the 48 .
At that moment, I 49 that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stop its way of developing, we also have the ability of doing the same thing. If we 50 ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we 51 to go and get what we need for growth.
We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the 52 to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the power to get over the rocks because it had 53 in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be 54 of who and what we are, and then the environment will begin to 55 us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to reach our goals.

Sichuan Cuisine and Hunan Cuisine are both known for their hot flavors, which might appear similar at first sight. That’s 56 Americans are pretty confused about how they are different.
This confusion has its roots in how Hunan food was introduced to 57 American public. According to Kian Lam Kho, the author of Chinese food blog Red Cook, a group of Chinese 58 (chef) are said to have been trained in both Hunan and Sichuan Cuisines in 1945. When they later sought opportunities in the United States, they 59 (bring) Hunan and Sichuan Cuisines to New York, where these two cooking styles were adjusted 60 (suit) local tastes.
As Kho puts 61 , these two cuisines offer different flavors. Sichuan Cuisine is characterized by the use of Sichuan peppercorns (花椒粒), 62 provide a unique numbing feeling. Hunan Cuisine, on the other hand, is famous for its bold and burning flavors, 63 (feature) the combination of fresh chilies (辣椒) and garlic to create a powerful and intense spicy taste. 64 Sichuan Cuisine, Hunan Cuisine does not typically include the numbing sensation of Sichuan peppercorns.
“It is amazing how distinct Hunan cooking is compared to its confusing Sichuan cousin. It is 65 (true) worthwhile to seek out restaurants or cookbooks that faithfully capture Hunan flavors in their menus or recipes.” Kho notes.

When I was in Grade 10, my family had a tough time. My parents lost their jobs during the Depression. Dad was too ill to work outside, while mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We relied on our community assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second-hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through for sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our shoes were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
New Year was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar fund for social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for New Year.
Unknown to Mum, I had been shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of gloves. I knew exactly which gloves I wanted. They were made of genuine leather and they had a price of twenty-three dollars. Well, the big day came on the last day of that year. I was very excited, as I hurried up to catch the bus. It was only a half-a-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for goodies. I knew then that we would have no delicious food for New Year, and I felt sad.
As I continued walking, I began to feel bewildered. I was sixteen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of gloves while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents.

W: I would like to begin my thank-you speech by saying “I want to whole-heartedly thank those who stuck with me along the way.”
M: You’re not going to start your speech with that boring opening, are you?
W: I think it’s a nice opening.
M: It’s too formal. How about “Hey Emily, you’re totally awesome. And Tania, you’re absolutely amazing.”?
W: That doesn’t even come close to expressing how I feel. I want to thank people for their kindness and support from the bottom of my heart.

W: We’ve been running the last couple of days and you’re a fast runner. How often do you run?
M: Well, now I only run about four days a week. But when I was younger, everyday.
W: Oh, really! Did you run in high school or college?
M: Believe it or not, I started when I was six years old.
W: Wow. So are you a better short distance runner or long distance runner?
M: Actually middle distance runner.
W: How far is a middle distance?
M: About 1,500 meters.
W: What’s your fastest time in the 1,500 meters?
M: Ah, three minutes and forty-seven seconds.
W: That’s pretty fast.
M: I did that in high school and I won a gold medal then. Though I’m not so fast now, still I can run the event within four minutes.
W: That’s pretty cool. My time will be about six minutes.

W: Have you ever considered starting a vegetable garden in our backyard, darling?
M: Hmm, I’m not sure. What’s the point? We can just buy vegetables at the supermarket.
W: Well, I think it would be a delightful hobby for us to do together. Besides, we would have fresh, organic produce.
M: That’s a valid point. It could also save money on groceries and help us stay healthy. But I’m concerned about the time and effort it would take to maintain the garden. And what if we don’t have a green thumb?
W: Don’t worry. We can start small and learn as we progress. Additionally, we have access to a wealth of online resources and helpful neighbors who can help us.
M: Alright, I’m willing to give it a go. What should we plant first?
W: How about some easy-to-grow vegetables like tomatoes and peppers? And we can also plant some herbs.
M: Sounds good. Let’s hit up the shop for some seeds now.

M: Hi, Marina. Can I ask a few questions?
W: Yes, sure, go ahead.
M: As a photographer, you are quite successful. Can you tell me who can become a photographer?
W: Anyone can become a photographer, as long as you want it. It’s not like you need a degree or certificate or anything. Yes, I’ve been planning to take photography classes in an art school in the UK, but before this, I’d already been working as a photographer for years—I started by using my phone in junior high. Some of my photograph er friends do other jobs at the same time—they are music makers, vloggers and directors.
M: What does a photographer usually do?
W: There are different kinds of photographers and our lives and work can be quite different, too. A National Geographic kind of photographer may travel to different places, taking photos of architecture, landscapes and animals. But fashion photographers like me, mainly do two things—commercial shoots and our own creative projects. The former is for making money and offering service to customers. The latter is for expression —we post these photos on our own social media, submit them to media outlets and contests, or host photographic exhibitions to show them off.
M: What makes a good photographer?
W: For commercial shooting, there are some routines that we can follow and the most important thing is to meet the needs of our customers. For our own shoots, what matters most is that you have something that you want to express, and these things can be received or understood by a certain group of people who think similarly.
M: Thanks for having given the interview.

Mozart was an outstanding musician and composer whose fame continues to grow more than two centuries after his death. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1756. Before the age of four, he had shown great musical talent. His father then decided to let him start taking instrumental lessons. The boy’s reputation as a musical talent grew fast. At five, he was composing music. From that time on, Mozart was performing in concerts and writing music. By his early teens, he had mastered the piano and violin, and was writing symphonies and operas. His first major opera was performed in Milan in 1770, when he was only fourteen. At fifteen, Mozart became the conductor for an orchestra in Salzburg. In 1781, he left for Vienna, where he was in great demand as both a performer and a composition teacher. His first opera was a success. But life was not easy because he was a poor businessman, and his finances were always in a bad state. His music from the next decade was not very popular, and he eventually fell back on his teaching jobs for a living. In 1788 he stopped performing in public, preferring only to compose. He died in 1791 at the age of thirty-five. Although he lived only a short life, he composed over 600 works.

She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.(格温多林·布鲁克斯是第一位获得普利策诗歌奖的非裔美国人。

根据第三段“The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.(布朗泽维尔诗歌是她第一次出版的诗集)”;第四段“In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen.(1950年,格温多琳·布鲁克斯因其第二部诗集《安妮·艾伦》获得普利策奖)”以及第五段“Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published.(她的下一部作品是1953年写的一部小说,名为《玛莎》,第一次出版时很少受到注意)”可推知,文章通过举例子的方式写这篇文章。故选A。
根据最后一段“She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.(她写了一个更广阔的世界,并处理重要的政治问题)”可推知,接下来作者可能会谈到与政治问题有关的诗歌。故选D。
28.A 29.D 30.B 31.C
根据第一段中的“Addiction to watching seven episodes of Real Housewives or “wasting” the afternoon watching back-to-back classic baseball games isn’t going to melt our brains.(沉迷于看七集《家庭主妇》或“浪费”一下午的时间看连续的经典棒球比赛不会融化我们的大脑)”可知,作者举例说明了人们娱乐的两种方式,引出全文话题。故选A。
根据第三段中的“And feeling guilty about activities we enjoy, or criticizing them, can detract from the benefits they offer us.(对我们喜欢的活动感到内疚,或者批评它们,会减少它们给我们带来的好处)”和最后一段“And don’t be ashamed of what that is, because clearly it’s doing something for you.(不要为这事感到羞耻,因为很明显这对你有帮助)”可知,Nabi认为对快乐的愧疚感是没有必要的。故选D。
根据最后一段中的“But it can help to think about what you like specifically, she points out.(但她指出,想想自己具体喜欢什么会有所帮助)”和“You probably don’t like all boy bands, so what is it about this particular group and their music?(你可能不喜欢所有的男孩乐队,那么这个乐队和他们的音乐有什么特别之处呢?)”
综合文章,尤其是最后一段中的“Whatever it is, find your little niche and go for that. And don’t be ashamed of what that is, because clearly it’s doing something for you.(不管是什么,找到你自己的位置,然后努力去做。不要为这事感到羞耻,因为很明显这对你有帮助)”可推知,作者会赞同“积极地看待我们对快乐的需求”的观点。故选C。
32.B 33.D 34.A 35.A
As documented in my research over the past 30 years, daughters who have strong, supportive relationships with their fathers generally earn better grades, have higher college graduation rates and enter more STEM professions. These daughters are also more emotionally resilient (恢复快的) and self-confident.
故选A。
After 46 years of college teaching, I still give colleges an “F” factor—a factor that plays a major role in female students’ well-being: fathers. 故选A。

39.根据后文“In fact, psychologists conclude that the strong link between clothing and mood suggests we should put on clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low. In short, wearing whatever you like on Monday makes you feel great!(事实上,心理学家得出结论,衣服和情绪之间的紧密联系表明,即使情绪低落,我们也应该穿上与快乐有关的衣服。简而言之,周一穿你喜欢的衣服会让你感觉很棒!)”可知,本段主要说明了服装可以影响情绪,即衣服也存在力量。由此可知,C选项“不要低估衣服的力量”符合语境,故选C。
40.根据上文“It means that instead of facing the most complicated stuff on a Monday, put some time into the easier tasks.(这意味着与其在周一面对最复杂的事情,不如把时间花在更容易的任务上)”可知,上文建议做更容易的任务,即度过一个放松的周一。

67. The bus drove off without me. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I went into the store and bought a turkey, ham, oranges and other goodies. I spent every dollar of my hard-earned money. The owner of the grocery store said, “Girl, the groceries have packed up like a mountain, and you can’t carry them home by yourself. So I asked two boys with carriers on their bicycles to run them the half-mile down to my house. With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door.
When Mum opened the door, she surprisingly found that some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor. Holding back the tears I whispered “Happy New Year! A big surprise!” “Can you tell me what happened?” Mum was so excited that she cried out. I had a lot of explanation as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. Even though I failed to get a new pair of gloves, the smile on Mum’s face made it all worthwhile. It was an unforgettable New Year for us after all!
