B In 2019, after retiring from her career as a social worker, Ane Freed - Kernis decided to build a home workshop and devote all of her free time to stone carving. “I might be covered head to to e in dust but I’m happy — it was something I needed more of in my life when I hit 60,” she says. This appeal has its origins in Freed - Kernis’ childhood. Growing up on her father’s farm in Denmark, she used to wander through the fields with her eyes fixed on the ground, looking for stones to add to her collection. “I’ve always been drawn to the shapes and textures (质地) of stones,” she says. After moving to England in 1977 and training as a social worker, Freed - Kernis soon became occupied with her busy career and the demands of raising her son. Stones were the last thing on her mind, until her father died in 2005. “He took a stone carving course in his retirement, and I always thought stone seemed so fun but never had the time to look into it myself,” she says. “After he died, I became determined to learn in his honour.” Signing up for a week-long stone carving course at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Freed-Kernis began to learn how to turn a block of rock into well-designed shapes. “It was really scary at the start because you would spend hours just hammering (锤打).” Now 65, Freed-Kernis has a thriving small business built largely through word of mouth. She creates 12 to 15 pieces a year that can take anywhere from a few days to three weeks to complete, while her prices range from £ 200 to £ 3,000. “I’m making smaller ones,” she says. “I don’t have to depend on the money much, so I want to keep prices in the range that people can afford, mainly just covering costs and labour (劳动力).” 4. Freed-Kernis was first attracted by stones when ______. A. she was 60 B. she was a child C. her father died D. she moved to England 5. What can we infer about Freed-Kernis from paragraph 3? A. She never cared about her father. B. She led a disappointing life in Denmark. C. She spent lots of time studying stone carving. D. She learned stone carving under the influence of her dad. 6. How did Freed-Kernis feel when she started stone carving course? A. Hopeful and proud. B. Confident and satisfied. C. Nervous and frightened. D. Impatient and unprepared. 7. Why is Freed-Kernis making smaller pieces? A. They are easier to move by her. B. They are more affordable to people. C. She wants to save costs and labour. D. She is too old to focus on making large ones. C In San Francisco, a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39, which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock (码头) officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the region in 15 years. “Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week,” PIER 39 harbormaster Sheila Chandor told many different media. “The surge in sea lions is usually a good sign of their strong population and healthy living environment,” said Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement at the Marine Mammal (海洋哺乳动物) Center in Sausalito, California. “California sea lions are sentinels (哨兵) of the ocean,” Ratner said. Their population to some extent reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of California sea lions is clearly a good thing. For nearly 35 years, the slippery (滑的) residents have been a star attraction for tourists. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just been repaired, but the ships had not yet been moved back. At that moment, the sea lions unexpected arrival not only attracted fans but also created enemies. According to a website, some dock residents and workers were scared away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake. The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. “The fact proves that this is really a good thing,” he said. “This is just a proof of how we can truly work together and think about how we can share our coasts with marine mammals and other wildlife in a way that benefits all the parties involved.” 8. How does the author start the text? A. By describing a situation. B. By answering a question. C. By holding a conversation. D. By comparing different opinions. 9. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Sharp increase. B. Tight control. C. Slow development. D. Sudden movement. 10. What is Ratner’s attitude to the final decision? A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Supportive. D. Unclear. 11. What message does the author seem to convey in the text? A. Sea lions are pretty cool animals. B. Animals and humans can live in harmony. C. Watching sea lions might not be a proper action. D. Sea lions should be driven out of PIER 39. D This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words. Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one- or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds ...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it. The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works. However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data. 12. What can we learn about MusicLM? A. It is the first AI music tool to be launched. B. It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences. C. It creates music based on simple descriptive words. D. It generates complex writings from a simple description. 13. What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM? A. They can take the place of musicians. B. They have gained commercial success. C. They don't have any practical use in life. D. They are based on huge amounts of data. 14. Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model? A. Creating music with strong biases. B. Requiring too much training data. C. Being difficult for some people to use. D. Producing music works with no creativity. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. The future of humans with AI B. A new AI tool to make music C Music created by some AI tools D. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s. Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home. After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom. “I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try?” Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room. 46. 根据文本内容从方框中选择恰当的词并用其正确形式填入文本图示中,每词限用一次,有两词为多余选项 disappoint   ride   take   suggest   bore  suddenly   phone   look   how   friend   her   tired A Different Way to Spend Summer __out of the window, Sadie sighed and wondered__her friends spent their summer vacations. → Sadie felt quite__. ↓ ↓ All of a __she came up with and idea that she could invite her friend Wendy__ bikes. → Sadie raced to the living room and picked up the__. ↓ ↓ Since Wendy didn’t answer the phone, Sadie called other__, but nobody was at home. → Sadie felt quite__. ↓ ↓ Without anything to do, Sadie turned to her mom for__. → Mom told Sadie sometimes it was nice to do things by __. 47. A new AI tool to make music C. Music created by some AI tools D. AI and its function in culture development 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第四段中“Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. 根据最后一段中“One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. 故选A项。 根据第一段中“This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. Signs That You Are Growing Growing is a lifelong process. → Sadie felt quite__ ↓ ↓ All of a __she came up with and idea that she could invite her friend Wendy__ bikes. 47. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park.(她可以叫她的朋友Wendy,Wendy总是有有趣的想法。 可知,Sadie想邀请Wendy一起起自行车,这里应用动词ride, invite sb. to do sth. 根据第二段中的“Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy.(Sadie跑到客厅,拿起电话,给Wendy打了电话。)” 根据第二段中的“She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.(她真的不想看电视,所以她去了自己的房间,找到了学校好朋友的电话号码表。 根据第三段中的““Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie.(Sadie说:“妈妈,我没有人可以一起玩,因为我学校的朋友不在家,Allison搬走了。”)” 根据第三段“After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.(挂断电话后,Sadie走进厨房,坐在桌子旁,看着妈妈打扫卫生。 根据第三段中妈妈的话“Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself(亲爱的,你可以自己做很多事情)”和第四段中妈妈的话“Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself(有时候,自己做事情很好)”可知,妈妈建议Sadie自己做一些事,by onself意为“独自”,为固定搭配,这里指Sadie,应用herself,所以第十空应填herself。 根据第一段中的“Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer.(Sadie望着窗外,叹了口气,想着夏天又是一个漫长而无聊的日子。)”和第三段中的““Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie.(Sadie说:“妈妈,我没有人可以一起玩,因为我学校的朋友不在家,Allison搬走了。”)” Because (her friends were not at home and her best friend Allison had moved away to a different city and) she didn’t have anyone to hang out during her summer vacation. 根据第一段中的“Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing.(Sadie想起了去年夏天她和她最好的朋友Allison去海滩时的乐趣。 Sadie spent her vacation last summer at the beach with her best friend Allison. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and tried surfing. 根据第三段中的““Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.(妈妈说:“亲爱的,你可以自己做很多事情,比如弹吉他或在花园里散步。 、第四段中的““Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try?”(“有时候,自己做事情很好,”妈妈说。“我喜欢和朋友们见面,但我也喜欢一个人做一些事情,比如自己散步或找一个安静的地方看书。为什么不试试呢?”)”和最后一段“Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room.(Sadie想了想妈妈的话,回到了自己的房间。)” After listening to her mother’s words, Sadie will try to do things by herself and find enjoyment in activities like playing her guitar, taking a walk alone, and finding a quiet spot to read.
