The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight. Everyone wants to kiss someone special (boyfriend, girlfriend or even a complete stranger!) as the bells ring out at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Hundreds or even thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fabulous fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most watch special, live New Year shows on TV and countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland, on New Year’s Eve, people visit their neighbours and drink, dance and generally have a good time. If you're invited to a Scottish home, it's important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth so you're wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you're hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky “the water of life”, so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
There’s one more key task you still have to perform if you can. The first person to knock on a neighbour's door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man. If you are, you'll bring good luck to the household. But what if that' s not you? Well, don't ring the bell just yet. Wait a while and the right person will turn up soon!

26. Why do visitors take some things to a Scottish home on New Year's Eve?
A. To share good food and warmth. B. To help those poor families.
C. To send best wishes to the families. D. To show respect and richness.
27. The underlined phrase “the right person” in the last paragraph refers to .
A. the host of a special TV show B. a tall, dark, handsome man
C. a man with coal, shortbread and whisky D. a neighbor

Memory loss is a common part of aging. A decade-long study of older adults in China has found that a healthy lifestyle is linked to slower memory loss even when people carry a risky gene for Alzheimer’s(阿尔茨海默氏症). Researchers from China's National Center for Neurological Disorders and other medical organizations followed 29,000 people aged at least 60 years for up to 10 years. Forty-nine percent of the participants were women.
At the beginning of the study in 2009, the researchers tested the participants memory function with the Auditory Verbal Learning Test(AVLT 听觉词语学习测验). They were also tested for the APOE gene, the most common gene linked with Alzheimer's. Around 20 percent of the participants were carriers of the risk gene. The participants received tests in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019. In the follow-ups, six healthy lifestyle factors were analyzed: a health y diet, regular physical exercise, active social contact, active cognitive activity, non-smoking and never drinking alcohol.
The results showed that the AVLT scores continuously decreased over the 10 years. But the highest test scores were in the favorable group and the lowest in the group where people usually have an unhealthy lifestyle. The participants with favorable and average lifestyles, even when they were APOE carriers, had a slower rate of memory loss than the participants with unhealthy lifestyles.
The researchers said that they studied the contribution of each lifestyle factor and their combined effects in a large sample size over an entire 10 years and offered important information to protect older adults against memory loss.
The results about the APOE carriers also provide a positive outlook that healthy lifestyle risks are related to a slower rate of memory loss, regardless of the genetic risk.
28. How many women participants participated in the study?
A. About 14000. B. About 13000. C. About 15000. D. About 12000.
29. According to the study, the following are all lifestyles linked to slower memory loss EXCEPT .
A. Regular physical exercise B. Active cognitive activity
C. Smoking and drinking alcohol D. Active social . contact
30. What do the underlined words “favorable group” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The group of people with healthy lifestyle. B. The group of people with unhealthy lifestyle.
C. The group of people carrying APOE gene. D. The group of people without APOE gene.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. An unbelievable study. B. The importance of healthy lifestyle.
C. Memory loss is a common part of aging. D. The healthier your lifestyle, the slower your memory loss.
D
By 2035, NASA wants to land humans on Mars. But reaching the red planet, on average around 140million miles away, will be difficult. Colder than Antarctica and with little to no oxygen, Mars is an unfriendly environment. Besides, the longer it takes astronauts to get there and the longer they stay, the more they are at risk.
That's why scientists are looking at ways to reduce trip time. Seattle-based company Ultra Safe Nuclear Technologies (USNC-Tech) has offered a solution: an NTP engine that could get humans from Earth to Mars in just three months. Such an engine takes advantage of nuclear technology. Currently, the shortest possible trip for an unmanned spacecraft is seven months, but a manned mission is expected to take at least nine months. Shorter missions would limit the astronaut's exposure to space radiation, but there is still concern about the radiation sent out from the nuclear reactor inside the spacecraft. This would be mitigated through the rocket's design.
To protect people on the ground, the NTP spacecraft would not lift off directly from Earth, Jeff Sheehy,aNASA scientist, adds. Instead, a regular chemical rocket would carry it into orbit, and only then would it fire up its nuclear reactor, Once in orbit, it could do little harm, as heat radiation cannot move through a vacuum(真空). If disaster hit and the rocket's reactor broke up, the pieces would not land on Earth—or any other planet——for thousands of years. By that time, the radioactive substance would have “naturally got to the point where it wasn't dangerous anymore”.
Michael Eades, director of engineering at USNC-Tech, says that nuclear-powered rockets would be more powerful and twice as efficient as the chemical engines used today, meaning they could travel further and faster, while burning less fuel. “Nuclear-powered rockets will be key to opening up the solar system but it could be at least two decades before they are used widely,” he says, adding that numerous demonstrations and tests would need to be carried out before an astronaut is sent to Mars in an NTP rocket.
32. What does the underlined word “mitigated” in Paragraph 2 mean ?
A. Shortened. B. Relieved. C. Achieved. D、 Simplified.
33. Why is the NTP spacecraft safe according to the text?
A. It barely spreads radiation in orbit.
B. Its radioactive substance will disappear soon.
C. Its broken reactor will be left on Mars.
D. It doesn't give out unclear radiation in space.
34. What do Michael Eades' words indicate about the NTP spacecraft?
A. It will fly to Mars without astronauts for tests.
B. It has been widely used for NASA.
C. It will be a breakthrough in space exploration.
D. It carries more fuel than a regular one.
35. What will probably happen after the NTP spacecraft enters its orbit?
A. The heat radiation will be kept from moving.
B. Its radioactive substance will disappear fast.
C. The broken reactor will be left on Mars.
D. It won't give out nuclear radiation in space.

Christmas was approaching, and I had no idea what to get for my wife. We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending an important meeting, so I had the rest of the week to figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house partner while Donna was away was her cat, Princess, who was everything that her name implied .I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors. Princess had other ideas, and slipped out of the house as I was bringing in some food. By the time I had turned around and gone back out of the door to look for her, she was gone.
Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn't wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess as soon as possible. So, I made up a poster of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn't find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn't dare ask her for one. Perhaps because my poster were not so clear, soon people in the area came to my house with several homeless cats. Though Princess wasn't among them, I let them stay in our yard. I figured Donna would understand.
Donna's happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn't mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. Finally, the day came for my wife to return.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 100 左右;
2.开头已给出。
Paragraph1:
I picked her up at the airport and decided to tell her what had happened.
Paragraph 2:
When Donna saw the homeless cats in the yard, her eyes just filled with tears.
