with other people. We can learn a lot about ①what people are thinking by watching their body language.Words are important, but ②the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings. ①what people are thinking是about的宾语从句,what在从句中作 thinking的宾语;by watching their body language作方式状语。 ②people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands是定语从句,修饰先行词the way。 Just like spoken language, body language varies<3> from culture to culture. The crucial<4> thing is ③using body language in a way that is appropriate<5> to the culture you are in.For example, ④making eye contact—looking into someone's eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. In other countries,by contrast<6>,eye contact is not always approved<7> of.For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate<8> respect to look down<9> ⑤when talking to an older person. ⑤when talking to an older person是省略句,补充完整应为when they are talking to an older person。 The gesture<10> for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who witnesses<11> another person employing<12> the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person ⑥encountering an identical<13> gesture may interpret<14> it as ⑥meaning zero. However, you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is not considered polite. ⑥encountering an identical gesture是现在分词短语作定语,修饰a person,a person与encounter之间是主动关系。 Even the gestures ⑦we use for “yes” and “no” differ<15> around the world. In many countries, ⑧shaking one's head means “no”, and nodding means “yes”.By comparison<16>, in Bulgaria and southern Albania, the gestures have the opposite meaning. There are also differences in ⑨how we touch each other, how close we stand to someone we are talking to, and how we act when we meet or part.In countries like France and Russia, people may kiss their friends on the cheek<17> when they meet.Elsewhere, people favour<18> ⑩shaking hands, bowing<19> from the waist<20>, or nodding the head when they meet someone else. ⑦we use for “yes” and “no”是省略关系词的定语从句,修饰先行词the gestures。 ⑨how we touch…,how close we stand…,and how we act…是三个由how引导的并列的宾语从句,连接方式为A,B,and C。其中,we are talking to是定语从句,修饰someone;when we meet or part是时间状语从句。 ⑩shaking hands, bowing from the waist,or nodding the head when they meet someone else是三个并列的动名词短语作favour的宾语,连接方式是A,B,or C。其中when they meet someone else是时间状语从句。 Some gestures seem to have the same meaning everywhere.⑪Placing your hands together and resting<21> them on the side of your head while closing your eyes means “sleep”.A good way of<22> saying “I am full” is moving your hand in circles over your stomach after a meal. ⑪placing your hands together and resting them on the side of your head是两个并列的动名词短语作主语,表示一件事,谓语动词此处用单数 means;while closing your eyes是时间状语,其中省略了you are。 Some body language has many different uses.Perhaps the best example is smiling.A smile can help us get through<23> difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers.A smile can break down<24> barriers<25>.We can use a smile ⑫to apologise, to greet someone, to ask for help<26>, or to start a conversation.Experts suggest ⑬smiling at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down<27> or lonely, ⑭there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend. A,B,C,or D。 ⑬短语smiling at yourself in the mirror作suggest的宾语;suggest doing sth建议做某事。 <1>thought n. What does the passage mainly talk about?
