Recently there have been news reports and television shows reporting on the quality of school lunches. According to federal guidelines, French fries count as a serving of vegetables. Many parents and others are upset that a salty, deep-fired food is replacing healthier options like carrot sticks. As a result, the potato — what French fries are made of — has been getting a bad rap. “The problem is not the potato,” insists Greg. “Potatoes are very healthy. But any food, even carrots or lettuce (生菜), will be less healthy if it’s cooked in grease(油脂).” Two months ago, Greg decided to eat nothing but potatoes for 60 days. As a high school science teacher and son of a potato farmer, he wanted to do something to draw attention to potatoes as a healthy food and a good choice as part of anyone’s regular meals. “It’s been an interesting experience,” Greg said. “For a while, I wasn’t sure I would make it. I was pretty tired of eating potatoes after a few weeks.” But for Greg there were some benefits that he hadn’t expected. He’s lost 15 pounds and he feels better than he has in years. “I have so much more energy,” he says. “I’ve been running and playing on a local basketball team, and I feel like I’m playing as well as I did when I was in high school.” And Greg has gotten a lot of attention, much more than he expected. “It’s been fantastic. Thousands of people have read my blog. I’ve been sharing recipes and talking about the experience. Every day I get to tell people what a great idea it is to eat potatoes.” Greg is glad to be back to a normal diet, but he still eats potatoes at least 5 or 6 times a week. “Everyone should!” he says with a smile. “Potatoes are healthy and taste great!” 41. C Fabien Cousteau, an ocean explorer, has announced plans to build a large research station under the ocean. The goal of the project is to become an “underwater version of the International Space Station (ISS)”. Mr. Cousteau is the grandson of Jacques Cousteau, an ocean scientist who brought the wonders of the sea to the attention of people around the world. Fabien Cousteau has gone the same way, exploring the sea as a scientist and working to protect the oceans. Though the ocean is all around us, studying it is a challenge. Divers are limited in how far down they can go and how long they can stay below. Returning to the surface can be dangerous. After a deep dive, divers must wait for hours before they dive again. The new undersea laboratory is designed to solve many of those problems. Named “Proteus” the lab is a 370-square-meter structure that can be a home for up to 12 people at a time. By actually living under the sea, scientists will be able to dive and work for much longer without worrying about the dangers of coming to the surface. Mr. Cousteau says that the research base won’t just be used to study and help protect the sea, but also to research new ways of creating energy and perhaps even searching for new medicines. The power for the station is expected to come from solar energy and the movement of the ocean. Proteus is also expected to have the first underwater greenhouse in the world, so that the lab will be able to grow some of its own food. Proteus was designed by Yves Behar, a well-known designer. Mr. Cousteau and Mr. Behar are working together to raise money to build Proteus. They say it’ll cost about $135 million. Plans call for Proteus to be built on the sea floor 18 meters below the ocean’s surface off the island of Curacao in the Caribbean Sea. Mr. Cousteau hopes to have the lab completed and ready to use by 2025. 46. What is the possible reason why Fabien Cousteau becomes an ocean explorer? A. The strong support of his family. B. The influence of his grandfather. C. The trouble in exploring the ocean. D. The dream of building the ISS in water. 47. What is the purpose of Fabien Cousteau’s building Proteus? A. To make studying the ocean easy. B. To get more of the ocean mapped. C. To become known for his research. D. To draw attention to ocean exploration. 48. What is expected to be possible in Proteus? A. Exploring the island of Curacao. B. Living in the sea forever. C. Creating solar energy. D. Planting vegetables. 49. What can we know about Proteus from the passage? A It has been put to use. B. It’s expensive to build. C. It’s in the testing stage. D. It’s built in the Pacific Ocean. 50. What is the passage mainly about? A. A world-known ocean explorer. B. A newly-built undersea laboratory C. An advanced way to explore the ocean D. A plan for an undersea research station. 第四节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 While other teenagers might be busy taking care of their personal pages online or playing games for hours, 14-year-old Jackson Oswalt from Memphis has been busy doing something different. He has spent his free time building his own nuclear reactor (核反应堆) in his home. Now, the boy is praised by city leaders for his achievement as he is the youngest person to have achieved nuclear fusion (核聚变). At just 12 years old, Jackson chose to spend his time exploring his interest in nuclear physics. After scouring the Internet, the student learned of the story of Taylor Wilson, an Arkansas boy who won recognition in the field of science as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in 2008 at the age of 14. Jackson was greatly inspired by him. The process of the nuclear experiment is not easy at all. But Jackson thought if Wilson could do it, then he could, too. Maybe he could even break Wilson’s record in the process. The boy started his project by turning his playroom into a laboratory. Then he bought different kinds of things to build own nuclear fusion reactor. “The beginning of the scientific research was just learning about what other people had done with their fusion reactors,” Jackson said. His parents spent nearly $8,000 to $10,000 supporting his nuclear experiment. “With the money, I searched for and bought the parts that I needed. Often the parts I found were not exactly what I wanted, so I had to make improvements to them.” Jackson’s hard work finally paid off. Hours before his 13th birthday, he made history as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in January last year. Months after the project, Jackson continued to test his fusion reactor to further prove his project. On Tuesday, Memphis City leaders officially praised Jackson’s achievements with a resolution. 51. B.
