In history, it was a men’s art only. However, the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team from Renhe town, Guangzhou, broke the tradition with an all-girl team.Members of the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team from Guangdong perform.  Coach Zhang Zheliang saw the number of young lion dancers going down and started to train girls in 2018. However, villagers didn’t like this. Girl dancers couldn’t even perform as some villagers took away their dance tools or drove them off. However, Zhang and his coach, Yu Weizhao, didn’t give up on their idea to set up an all-girl lion dance team. They finally found girl dancers and trained them hard.  Their hard work paid off when the girls won their first big award over the men’s teams in 2021. They had more wins and this made them respected in the lion dance community. Today, the team has over 20 girls aged 7 to 19.  The team’s success isn’t just about winning awards; it’s about breaking bias (偏见). More girls start to learn lion dance because of them.  Lion dance needs teamwork. In Guangdong, a one-lion dance usually needs eight performers – the lion head, lion tail, one drummer, one gong (锣) player, and four cymbal (镲) players.  Li Jiawen, 17, joined the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team in 2018. She played the part of the lion head when they won their first big award. The head was heavy, but she still had to lift it up really high to reach at least 1.7 meters. At the same time, she needed to show the lion’s rich facial expressions. However, she was not good at this first. She has a lot of schoolwork, but she goes to the lion dance team’s training every Friday and Saturday from 7:30 pm to 10 pm. Now, she can hold the lowest horse stance (马步) for eight minutes. That’s a big step up from when she started in 2018. At that time she couldn’t even hold it for one minute. ( )16.What is special about the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team? A. It has only female members. B. It performs a unique style of lion dance. C. It is the oldest lion dance team in China. D. It is the only lion dance team in Guangdong.
