Eco-friendly Umbrella
Traditional umbrellas come with a fixed surface. Although it is changeable, you cannot replace it easily. This eco-friendly design is more flexible. It is actually only an umbrella skeleton without any surface, which can be folded, so you can put anything such as newspapers, plastic bags or whatever you want to serve as the protecting surface.
Pollution-sensitive Dress
Don’t be caught outside unaware of pollution levels in the air. The pollution-sensitive EPA Dress by Stephanie Sandstrom notices pollution in the air accordingly. This dress—which is actually quite pretty—looks like you pull it from the bottom of the dirty laundry pile when the air is dirty. It might protect your health by advising you to stay indoors for the day but it won’t do you any favor if you’re meeting with clients.
Eco-friendly Car Racer
Can you image a car racer is so eco-friendly that its tyres are made from potatoes, its body is created from hemp (大麻) and rapeseed oil and it runs on fuel made from wheat and sugar beet? The one seater racing car called Eco One is built by experts from Warwick University, who hope that Eco One will be used by the automotive industry. It is sold at $ 51,000.
Eco-friendly Moss (苔藓) Carpet
Do you know it is said that walking on fresh grass can really increases your blood circulation? The Moss Carpet, created by Nguyen La Chanh, looks at getting the grass to your feet. The mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss. The humidity (湿度) of the bathroom ensures that it grows well. And that’s why you need to place it there and not anywhere else.
1. The EPA Dress is designed to ________.
A. discourage people from going out B. help meet with clients
C. improve people’s appearance D. inform people of air quality
2. What can we know about Eco One?
A. It can seat one passenger and one driver.
B. It can’t be available for the public at present.
C. It is mainly made from some kinds of plants.
D. It will take the place of the traditional car industry.
3. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A science report. B. A personal blog.
C. A health report. D. An official document.

It is generally accepted that blind people are limited when it comes to enjoying beautiful things around them. This month the Utrecht Central Museum in the Netherlands offered an unusual art exhibition called The Blind Spot. This exhibition was accessible to the visually disabled. Sighted visitors are encouraged to wear a blindfold on their eyes as they experience the artworks. This exhibition excited the other senses other than the visual sense. Visitors could look at artworks as expected. Besides, they could also touch and smell them. The show was designed to provide a better experience for museumgoers with poor eyesight.
The Blind Spot recreated existing famous paintings, but with extra dimensions, such as sound and smell. Visitors could even get a “feel” for the art, which included touchable elements.
Visitor Farid el Manssouri seemed to enjoy his experience. He smiled as he moved his hands over cheese, grapes and bread, part of the representation of a famous 1610 painting by Floris van Dvck. “The first thing that struck me was the smell. I could really smell the fragrant cheese, and I touched it too.” Manssouri said. Manssouri wondered how the food did not fall from its unbalanced position. “That was really surprising to feel... I guess it was glued on pretty well,” Manssouri said.
Artist Jasper Udink ten Cate and designer Jeroen Prins created The Blind Spot. They said they were inspired by an experience they shared with a blind visitor at an art show one year ago. “One day, somebody who could not see was there. At the place we served food out of this work, and we helped her touch the artwork. She was blind and she had a lot of feelings. She was touched. So we bad the realization, ‘Wow, we have something.’ That moment was the starting point to actually create this exhibition.” ten Cate said.
The museum's head Steffie Maas said The Blind Spot was an impressive experiment on the way to more such improvements.
4. What are visitors with normal vision encouraged to wear to experience the artworks?
A. Gloves. B. Signs. C. Eye covers. D. Face masks.
5. What is unique about the exhibition?
A. Only blind visitors were allowed in. B. The exhibits could be heard or smelled.
C. Original famous paintings were on show. D. The artworks were copies of famous paintings.
6. Where did the idea of the exhibition come from?
A. A famous 1610 painting. B. A blind visitor's recommendation.
C. Realization of more sense dimensions. D. A previous experience with a blind visitor.
7. What is Steffie Maas's attitude towards the exhibition?
A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Negative. D. Ambiguous.
C 5. B 6. D 7. A

What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That’s the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently.
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.
It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight — like walking or running — may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.
8. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. A lot of students like to read while eating.
B. Dining halls can also be used to do exercise.
C. Study and exercise burn the same amount of energy.
D. Many students don’t pay enough attention to exercise.
9. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Jefferson’s statement made sense.
B. Jefferson was very fond of exercise.
C. Jefferson was on the way to doing exercise.
D. Jefferson increased the importance of exercise.
10. What’s mainly talked about in the text?
A. The importance of exercise. B. How to choose a suitable sport.
C. How to keep healthy by exercising. D. The link between exercise and study.
【答案】8 D 9. A 10. A

根据第一段中“What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That’s the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently. (教室、电脑桌、自助食堂和图书馆有什么共同点?那是学生们花费大量时间的地方。虽然数小时的学习消耗脑力,但你的身体和大脑都需要体育锻炼才能有效运作)”可知,作者认为在通过学习消耗脑力之外,学生需要体育锻炼来维持身体和大脑的运作。由此推知,许多学生对锻炼不够重视。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. (托马斯·杰斐逊曾经写道,要想在学术研究上取得成功,一个人每天应该花两个小时锻炼身体,因为不能为了学习而牺牲健康。)”可知,托马斯·杰斐逊强调了日常锻炼的重要性,再结合画线词的下文“A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity. (塔夫茨大学研究人员的一项研究发现,自称每周至少锻炼3天的学生比那些不锻炼的学生更有可能拥有更好的身体健康状况和更大的幸福感。这项研究和其他证据表明,锻炼的真正好处可能不会在锻炼后立即显现,而是来自长期坚持有规律的活动)”可知,这项研究和其他证据都表明,长期有规律的活动对人的身心健康有益。因此,划线句子表示托马斯·杰斐逊的论述是有道理的。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The importance of exercise is nothing new. (锻炼的重要性并不是什么新鲜事)”以及最后一段中“You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.(你可能还会发现锻炼的另一个好处:增强自信。这可能会让你更容易参与课堂,并帮助你在学术和社交场合表现出色)”可知,文章强调了体育锻炼的重要性,通过引用托马斯·杰斐逊的观点和相关研究,作者指出定期锻炼可以提高身体健康和幸福感,减少一些疾病的风险,而且锻炼还能增强自信。故选A项。

So, You Want to Be a Writer?
What are some tips on becoming a writer?
1. Read everything you can. Most writers are good readers. They read because they love to lose themselves in books. They like the sounds of language and the way that reading a good description can feel as satisfying as winning a race or eating really good food. ___11___. Do you like stories that are fast-paced and full of unexpected twists? Do you prefer to read books with characters who seem like someone you might know? Do you like to feel scared or do you like a story that makes you laugh until you cry? Think about the types of writing you like best, and try to identify the qualities that attract you.
2. ___12___ It’s easy to forget a good idea if you do not record it immediately. If you get in the habit of carrying a notebook or journal with you everywhere you go, you can write down anything you want to remember. When you are talking to friends in the cafeteria or waiting for the bus, something might give you an idea for a character or a scene in a story. You might have a dream you don’t want to forget, or you might just write down the lyrics of a song you love. ___13___
3. Do your homework. If you decide that you would like to submit your work for publication, make sure you do your research. If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues. ___14___ If you are submitting to a book publisher, explore their website to make sure your material is similar to (but not exactly the same as) other books they publish.
4. Stay positive. A writer’s life can be frustrating. Sometimes it’s hard to sit down and write. ___15___ This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have.
A. Talk to friends.
B. Keep a notebook.
C. As you read, pay attention to what speaks to you.
D. You may get many refusals before you receive a single acceptance.
E. Does it seem like your writing fits in with other stories or articles?
F. These everyday thoughts and observations can be material for your writing one day.
G. Writing is a good way to clear your mind and make room for more of the “good stuff”.
【答案】11 C 12. B 13. F 14. E 15. D
C. As you read, pay attention to what speaks to you.(当你阅读的时候,注意说给你的内容。)
If you get in the habit of carrying a notebook or journal ...
根据空格上文you can write down anything you want to remember.(你可以写下任何你想记住的东西。) These everyday thoughts and observations can be material for your writing one day.(这些日常的想法和观察可能有一天会成为你写作的素材。)
If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues. If you are submitting to a book publisher, explore their website to make sure your material is similar to (but not exactly the same as) other books they publish.(如果您向图书出版商投稿,请浏览他们的网站,以确保您的材料与它们出版的其他书籍相似(但不完全相同)。) Does it seem like your writing fits in with other stories or articles?(你的作品与其他的故事或文章是否相符?)
This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have. You may get many refusals before you receive a single acceptance.(在你被接受之前,你可能会得到很多拒绝。)

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. Remarkably, he could read; yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve had been failing since first grade. Sadly, no one noticed him until Miss White, a smiling, young, beautiful redhead.
Steve was immediately attracted by Miss White at the first sight! Yet, still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. In the middle of the first semester, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared about him. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve!” Alarmed, he turned to look at her. “Pay attention!”
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…” She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face. “…. The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance! Don’t give up on your life!” Nothing swayed him. “Steve! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got if!!! Someone cared about him? Someone, CARED

Serious and determined, he headed for the woods. Steve studied hard in the woods and finished all the homework for the weekend.
The following Monday, Miss White gave a quiz on the weekend homework as usual. Steve hurried through the test, and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss White took his paper. Obviously puzzled she began to look it over. Steve walked back to his desk, his heart pounding within his chest. Miss White’s face was in total shock! She glanced up at Steve down and up. Suddenly, her face broke into a radiant smile. The smartest boy had just passed his first test! A great change took place within the heart of one boy, all because of one teacher, who cared.

A. Gloves. B. Signs. C. Eye covers. D. Face masks.

A. Only blind visitors were allowed in. B. The exhibits could be heard or smelled.

A. A famous 1610 painting. B. A blind visitor's recommendation.
C. Realization of more sense dimensions. D. A previous experience with a blind visitor.
7. What is Steffie Maas's attitude towards the exhibition?
A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Negative. D. Ambiguous.

What do classrooms computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common?

ABOUT HIM!
