The term “social phobia (社交恐惧症)” seems to have taken on popularity these days. Young people in particular are describing themselves as having “social phobia”. They prefer not to go out much, saying that it’s not easy for them to make new friends or socialize. But is this a “real” disorder?
In fact, this is just a reaction to certain social situations. US researcher Ty Tashiro wrote the book Awkward: The Science of Why We’re Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome. He explains that some people don’t “read” social situations correctly and therefore end up feeling uncomfortable. For example, they might be afraid of breaking some unspoken rules. Therefore, they start to act awkwardly (笨拙地) because they don’t want this to happen. This might make them unwilling to socialize. They prefer to stay in instead of going out to meet new people, but this doesn’t mean they have social phobia.
“Real” social phobia—also known as social anxiety—is much more serious. People with social anxiety want to go out and interact (互动) with people but are so terrified of doing it that they cannot leave their homes. Their brains simply won’t allow them to interact with others in a normal way. People with social phobia disorder can even experience panic attacks (惊恐发作) because of the mental illness.
Fortunately, social anxiety can be treated. Some people use self-help books to help them gain more control over their minds. Therapy (心理治疗) can also help.
4. What does Paragraph 1 say about some young people?
A. They find it hard to socialize.
B. They don’t like making friends.
C. Social phobia makes them more popular.
5 What was Tashiro’s opinion about these young people?
A. They are suffering from social phobia.
B. They should avoid uncomfortable situations.
C. They sometimes misunderstand social situations.

A. 身体的 B. 精神的 C. 社会的

The British are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. The average person in the UK consumes (消耗) around 1.9kg of tea every year. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all sections of society. But tea does not grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time, British ships were exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea was available in Britain to buy. However, it was only available to the richer of the society.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first, people drank this kind of tea exactly as it was drunk in China. They soon discovered that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British characteristic.
In the 1800s, tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time, they began to have afternoon tea. This includes drinking tea with a snack around 4 p.m. to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea decreased sharply as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms where you could buy and drink tea started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and socializing in these places. At the start of the 20th century, the British began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Kettles (水壶) became necessary in every kitchen. Just like Samuel Johnson said, “tea for pleasure at dusk, tea for comfort at night, and tea to welcome the new day in the morning.”
8. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Most of the tea consumed in Britain is grown locally.
B. The British learned to add milk to tea from the Indians.
C. Green tea arrived in Britain before black tea.
9. What can we learn about afternoon tea in the UK from the article?
A. It was enjoyed by the common people at first.
B. It is to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner.
C. It has become more and more popular recently.
10 Why did the price of tea decrease sharply in the late 1800s in Britain?
A. Because people in Britain got bored with drinking tea.
B. Because more tea was shipped from India and China.
C. Because the British could grow tea around their homes.
11. What is the article mainly about?
A The history of tea drinking in the UK.

Which arts were Chinese ancient scholars (学者) expected to learn? According to UNESCO, they were calligraphy (书法), painting, chess and the guqin.
The guqin, one of the oldest Chinese traditional musical instruments, could date back to over 3,000 years ago. With longer strings (弦) than many other musical instruments, the guqin can produce rich tones (音调).
Bringing traditional musical instruments to life is a tradition in Wu Wenguang’s family. Wu Wenguang is a 78-year-old inheritor (继承者) of the guqin. He not only perfects his own musical skills but also works hard to keep guqin music alive. Wu said guqin music was often written in simple words. Although some words were given to describe how to use the hands and play the seven strings, there were no instructions on how fast or slow to play it. So even if there were about 3,000 ancient songs for guqin music, different musicians had different understandings, according to Wu.
To keep guqin music alive, Wu and his father Wu Jinglue (1907-1987), who was also good at playing the guqin, re-created more than 100 ancient pieces. Besides ancient guqin songs, Wu has also changed music works from today and put them into his performances to increase the popularity of guqin music.
“More and more young people grow to love guqin playing with a new wave of interest in the nation’s traditional culture,” said Wu Ye, Wu’s daughter, also an inheritor of the guqin.
To attract young people, Wu and other inheritors also organize a series of guqin concerts with different themes.

B. They should avoid uncomfortable situations.
C. They sometimes misunderstand social situations.
6. What does the underlined word “mental” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 身体的 B. 精神的 C. 社会的
7. What does the article try to explain?
A. Who has social phobia.
B. Why people have social phobia.

At the beginning of the 1700s the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually.
A Most of the tea consumed in Britain is grown locally.
10. Why did the price of tea decrease sharply in the late 1800s in Britain?
A. Because people in Britain got bored with drinking tea.
B. Because more tea was shipped from India and China.
C. Because the British could grow tea around their homes.
11. What is the article mainly about?
A. The history of tea drinking in the UK.
B. Ways to drink tea correctly in the UK.
C. Reasons behind British people’s love for tea.
