Kairo was waiting for his mom to pick him up from school one day. She arrived with the car windows down, playing his song, Easy Now, as loud as the volume could go. That’s when she told him that he was nominated for a Juno Award, in the category of Reggae Recording of the Year.
“I’m so glad that reggae music is being recognized and appreciated here in Canada,” Kairo said. At age 13, Kairo is the youngest artist ever nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year at the Junos. “It’s really special to be recognized at such a young age, and it motivates me to keep making more music,” said Kairo.
Kairo’s mom, Kim, recalls her son being interested in music from a very young age. “Kairo would try to play the keyboard before he was tall enough to reach it,” she said. Listening to music from the “golden era” of reggae music is a normal thing in their household, she added.
Reflecting on his inspirations, Kairo said that if he could change anything about himself, it would be when and where he was born. “I would have loved to be born in Jamaica during the 1960s, at a time when reggae music was becoming more popular around the world,” said Kairo. As a Canadian reggae artist outside of Jamaica, Kairo said he feels that music needs to return to the “roots” of reggae. He said that music should spread a message about love and peace, not things like violence and hate. “As a black musician in Canada, I have a lot to talk about, and a lot to sing about,” he said.
Kairo’s music is about staying positive, despite negative things that we might see in the world. “There are some injustices that I can see in the world and I talk about them because they need to be spoken about,” said Kairo.
4. What is special about Kairo’s being nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year?
A. He is a black musician. B. He has made many music works.
C. His music is recognized in Canada. D. He is the youngest to receive the prize.
5. What mainly contributes to Kairo’s achievement in music?
A. His mother’s support. B. His passion for music.
C. His years of hard work. D. His teacher’s encouragement.
6. What can we learn about Kairo from paragraph 4?
A. He wants to get reggae music back to its origin.
B. He moved from Jamaica to Canada in the 1960s.
C. He is not content with his present life.
D. He was born in Jamaica in the 1960s.

When we’re in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them, there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
12. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Parents feel se cure about their privacy online.
B. Parents have realized the importance of social networks.
C. Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D. Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.
13. What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?
A. Their parents make negative comments on them.
B. They hide something from their parents.
C. Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
D. They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
14. What does this overlook of a parent’s friend request by a teenager potentially indicate?
A. The teenager is hiding something from his parents.
B. The teenager does not respect his parents’ requests.
C. The teenager wants to be independent in certain aspects of his life.
D The teenager is unfamiliar with the use of social media.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Parents’ friend requests. B. Privacy online.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段的“However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.(然而,越来越多的父母开始意识到社交网络在他们的生活中有多么重要。这一认识使许多家长有动力对社交网站进行自我教育)”可推知,父母已经意识到社交网络在他们生活中的重要性。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before. (另一方面,如果你接受了,那么你可能会有一种被监视的感觉,不再像以前那样自由地评论或交流)”可知,如果孩子接受了父母加为好友的请求,他会有被监视的感觉。由此可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的理由可能是不愿意被父母监视。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.(当一个青少年忽视了父母的朋友请求时,这并不一定意味着他在隐瞒什么,但可能意味着这是他想要独立的生活的一部分)”可知,青少年忽略父母的好友请求可能意味着他在生活的某些方面想要独立。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? (社交网站已经成为学校走廊的延伸,所以你会把你的父母加为“朋友”,让他们看到你的在线活动和与朋友的对话吗)”可知,文章主要围绕父母申请加孩子为好友的请求展开,说明随着社交媒体的迅速发展,越来越多的父母亲意识到社交网络的重要性,想加孩子为好友,但是对于孩子来说,这是个艰难的选择,接受或者拒绝都会让自己遭遇麻烦。故选A。

6 What can we learn about Kairo from paragraph 4?
A. He wants to get reggae music back to its origin.
B. He moved from Jamaica to Canada in the 1960s.
C. He is not content with his present life.
D. He was born in Jamaica in the 1960s.

People may drink tea at home or in public, for example, at tea houses.
As part of culture, tea has a relationship with history, health, education, communication and so on. It is commonly used at social activities. For example, afternoon tea is a British custom. Families or friends can communicate with each other while having afternoon tea.

These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don’t get in real life.
13 What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?
D. The teenager is unfamiliar with the use of social media.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Parents’ friend requests. B. Privacy online.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.
