M: Ok. Good morning, everyone. Now I’m going to talk about technology and learning. First of all, let’s talk about the Internet. There’re several ways you can use it to improve your English, because you can read, listen and write.I’m sure that before long, speak.Firstly, writing practice is excellent for your learning. On the Internet there’re two places where you can write—message boards and live chat rooms. Live chat rooms are great for improving your fluency, because you have to write quickly. People don’t want to wait too long to hear your response. A message board is good for both fluency and accuracy because you can think and prepare before you write. Also, the Internet is a good place to practice your listening. The Internet may be better than the radio as you can listen again and again. You should visit a good news site, such as the BBC. BBC radio is an incredible resource. The ability to listen repeatedly, and to pause, allows you to put into practice the advice I give in the reading and listening skills section. In order to improve your listening, you have to be an active listener: make notes, try to write down the main points, try to write down new vocabulary. Finally, visit the website for the textbook. There’re extra practice exercises and reading materials. It also offers learners special message boards. OK. That’s all for today. Thank you for listening.

The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I drag my body toward the kitchen, I’m greeted by my mother standing over the stove. She effortlessly cooks a dish that blends Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe, which reflected her upbringing.
Since my grandmother’s passing, I’ve become more aware of my mother’s aging and her dedication (奉献) to cooking for us. She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries — Korea, Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me, my partner and our kids. In alternating years, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her partner.
According to Statista, most Canadians claim to spend between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their household. Ten percent of respondents to the 2022 survey stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking extends beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce (农产品) and finds the best deals. She takes everyone’s preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share. Helping her out in the kitchen demands a great deal of patience. Yet, I know it’s her way of expressing love.
As I chop the vegetables, she glances over and notices that my carrots are not equally sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task.
“Just do the dishes.”

By the time she was 85 years old, Joy Ryan had never seen the ocean or mountains. Now, she’s 94 years old and has seen every comer of the US after visiting all 63 US national parks. Joy went on the epic journey with her grandson, Brad Ryan, who was first inspired to travel with his grandmother in 2015. “When I learned she had never seen the great wildernesses of America-deserts, mountains, oceans, you name it, I thought that was something that I would regret if I didn’t get myself involved in some way,” Brad said. Although they initially planned just to visit the Great Smoky Mountains, they had such a great time that they felt inspired to continue their journey by hitting up all the national parks in the US. “I think we’re two peas in a pod when it comes to our desire for travel and adventure,” Brad said.
The 63rd and final stop on their tour was the National Park of American Samoa. There was a reason why they left this park until the very end. “It’s the only US national park that’s south of the equator. We can enjoy the beautiful tropical paradise,” Brad said, “But as we’ve come to learn from the rangers who work there. American Samoa is an island community that is firmly rooted in family.”
The fact that a grandmother in her 90s completed such a long journey may inspire others, but Brad has always known his grandmother as an inspiration who lives up to her name. “She has already lived from a place of gratitude and joy,” he said. “That’s a power… and a choice that we all have. And I think that’s been my greatest lesson.”

Like dogs, wolves can recognize and respond to the voices of familiar humans more than those of strangers, according to a recent study. The research challenges the belief that dogs ability to differentiate human voices is due to selective breeding
Holly Root Gutteridge and colleagues carried out experiments across five zoos and wildlife parks in Spain, involving a total of 24 gray wolves. The team set up speakers and first played the animals the voice of a number of strangers. Then, they played the wolves the voice of their keeper who would say familiar things to them in Spanish, such as “Hey, what’s up, wolves?” The wolves raised their heads, pricked their ears up, and turned toward the speaker. To test that the effect wasn’t accidental, the researchers went back to playing the wolves recordings of strangers and found that they once more lost interest. Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’ voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases. Once more, the results held up.
Root Gutteridge pointed out the significance of wolves being able to differentiate between humans, despite the fact that our species went our separate evolutionary (进化的) ways tens of millions of years ago.
Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.
Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”
32. What established viewpoint does the recent research call into question?
A. Dogs are the only animals that can differentiate human voices.
B. Wolves recognize the voices of humans better than dogs.
C. Wolves cannot understand human languages.
D. Selective breeding enables dogs to differentiate human voices.
33. How did the researchers test if the wolves truly recognized their keepers’ voices?
A. By letting the keepers say unfamiliar phrases in Spanish.
B. By asking strangers to reproduce the keepers’ voices.
C. By playing recordings of strangers speaking familiar phrases.
D. By changing the playback speed of the keepers’ recordings.
34. Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To stress their close relationship with humans.
B. To offer additional evidence for the recent study.
C. To point out another species that can differentiate voices.
D. To explain how animals’ ability to differentiate humans’ voices developed.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The focus of the future studies.
B. The limitations of the research.
C. The significance of the research.
D. The uniqueness of the experiments.
D 33. A 34. C 35. C

Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.(在此之前,关于动物如何区分其他物种的发声的研究数量有限。
根据最后一段“Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”(考虑到这项新发现,“很有可能有很多物种正在倾听我们的声音,并开始了解我们作为个体的存在,”Root Gutteridge说。“这并不全是我们的事。狗可以听邻居的猫叫,并理解猫叫之间的区别。如果这种能力如此普遍,这意味着动物可能比我们以前想象的有更多的跨物种相互作用。”)”可知,最后一段是Root Gutteridge对这一研究发现的评论,指出这项研究让人们对动物的了解更进了一步,因此最后一段主要讲的是研究的意义。故选C。

【导语】本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些方法帮助无家可归的动物。
【36题详解】
根据空前“With millions of animals living in shelters every year, there aren’t enough people to take them in. (每年有数百万只动物生活在收容所里,没有足够的人收留它们。)”可知,空前主要介绍了很多动物没有人照顾,故B项“所以,许多动物得不到它们所需要的爱和照顾。”符合,和前文构成因果关系,很多动物在收容所里,因此得不到所需要的爱和照顾,故选B项。
【37题详解】
根据空后“but you’ve made room at the shelter for another homeless cat or dog.”but you've made room at the shelter for another homeless cat or dog.(而且你在收容所为另一只无家可归的猫或狗腾出了空间。)
根据空后“Whether you like rolling up your sleeves and cleaning cages, socializing with a few of your kitten friends or working with numbers, your skills and interests can make a huge impact on the lives of homeless pets in your community. (无论你是喜欢卷起袖子打扫笼子,还是喜欢与一些小猫朋友社交,还是喜欢数字工作,你的技能和兴趣都会对你所在社区无家可归宠物的生活产生巨大影响。)”可知,本段主要介绍当志愿者帮助动物,故A项“与动物一起做志愿者”符合,不管你的技能和爱好是什么,都会对你所在的社区的无家可归的宠物生物带来巨大的影响,因此和动物一起做志愿者吧,故选A项。
【39题详解】
根据空后“Shelters and rescue groups rely on foster (收养的) families to take in dogs and cats on a short-term basis. No matter what you like to do and what you’re good at, there’s a volunteer job for you.

My name is Wen Yu, but you can call me “Fish”. I want to talk about the time I went to the US to meet my American pen pal Drew, but first I need to go back a little bit to explain things.
I was a second-year junior high schooler when my English teacher, Ms. Gao, had us experiment with a pen pal program set up through our school. This was an amazing opportunity at the time since it meant we could use our English skills to communicate with other teenagers the same age as us around the world through email! Still, I was a bit shy and nervous since I knew my English was pretty poor; but at the same time, I was excited to make a new friend and was determined to improve with this new opportunity presented to me.
Ms. Gao assigned me to write emails with a boy named Drew in the US. He was from a city called Cincinnati in Ohio. I knew a little about the biggest cities in the US— New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago— But Cincinnati? I had no idea where it was. Maybe it was somewhere near one of those cities?
As we continued to talk through email, I was surprised to find my English was slowly improving. I found my English going from stiff and formulaic (刻板的) to more natural and casual to match the way he wrote. I even picked up some slang (俚语) words along the way! We got to know each other’s hobbies and interests as well as our dreams and hopes for the future. Drew seemed so nice, and I found myself wanting to visit him someday and see what Cincinnati had to offer. He, too, wanted to visit Beijing and try out the local food I had told him so much about.
We continued our email conversations even after the program ended. Drew told me how long his summer break was going to be and said he’d show me around if I were to ever visit. To my surprise, that opportunity would come sooner than I thought.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已写好;
As it turned out, my parents were planning a surprise vacation to the US.

Entering the baggage claim area (行李领取处), I finally came face-to-face with Drew.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
As it turned out, my parents were planning a surprise vacation to the US. They had certain cities in mind, but were open to suggestions. When I mentioned Cincinnati, they just looked at each other in confusion. But when I gave more explanation about the most recent conversation between Drew and I, things made more sense to them. Being the more adventurous type, my dad was a fan of the idea, but my mom was worried that she wouldn’t like the local food. When it came closer to the day of our flight, I saw her packing some food and tea in her luggage just in case. So, after a long flight, we finally touched down at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Paragraph 2:
Entering the baggage claim area (行李领取处), I finally came face-to-face with Drew. He was a handsome young boy with freckles, reddish hair and the biggest smile I’d ever seen. His parents were standing with him, so we exchanged gifts, hugs and handshakes before making a tour of the town. We saw steamboats on the river, ate spaghetti topped with chili at the famous Skyline restaurant, and we even managed to watch a game of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team! We had a fantastic time together, even though it seemed to go by in an instant. Evennow, I’m waiting for the day when Drew and his family can make their own trip to Beijing.

34 Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 5?

注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已写好;
As it turned out, my parents were planning a surprise vacation to the US.
