Unit 1 Teenage Life Reading and Thinking 人教版2019必修第一册 目 录 Lead-in While-reading Pre-reading Post-reading Learning objectives: At the end of this lesson, students are able to: 1. find out the main ideas of different paragraphs by using the reading strategy “skimming”; 2. practice the skill of skimming with a text about school life in the US; 3. collect information about the challenges in senior high school through reading; 4. talk about the challenges you are facing. Lead-in: How is your school life? Do you have any problem in school? Lead-in: What do you want to know about school life in other countries? How many courses do they take each school year? Once they have decided on a course, can they make a change if it is not suitable for him/her? Do they have College Entrance Exams like in our country? Do they have a lot of homework every day? How many hours do they spend on each course before graduation? Do they have to choose extra-curricular activities or voluntarily? Lead-in: What do you want to know about school life in other countries? School life in America: Freshman: a student in his or her first year of high school or college (美国高中、大学) 一年级学生 Sophomore: a student in his or her second year of high school or college (美国高中、大学) 二年级学生 Junior: a student in his or her third year of high school or college (美国高中、大学) 三年级学生 Senior: a student in his or her fourth year of high school or college (美国高中、大学的) 毕业班学生 Lead-in: What would you tell a teenager from another country about school life in China? Our school life is quiet and safe and gun crimes never happen. School in cities can provide many colorful extr-curricular activities, but in rural areas, such activities are not always available. Like senior high students in other countries we are facing fierce competition in the College Entrance Exam. We have so many things to learn every day that sometimes we have to stay up. Most of our classmates will stay in the same class for the whole senior high, so we are more likely have our lifelong friends, Lead-in: What would you tell a teenager from another country about school life in China? School life in China school life in China courses clubs after-class activities school hours canteen dormitory ... Pre-reading: Narration (记叙文) Look at the title and the picture on P14, then predict (预测): 1. What is the text type of the passage? 2. Who is the author? THE FRESHMAN CHALLENGE A senior high school student While-reading: Read the text quickly and find the main idea of each paragrph. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing. First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I won’t quit. I’ll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community. I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future. I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough.
